Competitive should have SMS verification

With the upcoming 2-2-2 Role Q changes competitive is going to be so much better but one more thing that the DEVs need to acknowledge is that smurfing is a problem. It ruins the reputation of the game for new players and big streamer personalities.

You can’t watch Shroud’s recent streams of OW and make the claim that smurfing isn’t a problem.

They should even consider hardware bans if possible.

With 2-2-2 RQ coming to OW a lot of streamers have shown interest in playing it for the first time or making a return to it. This is a really big opportunity for the game to increase in popularity outside of OWL. Don’t drop the ball on this, OW is currently considered to be a very niche game!

Watching Shroud getting stream sniped by people playing things like Genji with a duo Q pocket healer is just disgusting.

Agreed. I believe Siege did that to Ranked on PC.

In KR server all KR players must undergo real identity verification which includes phone/sms verification.

Guess what, it doesnt help at all.

I think it’s those cafes that counteract a lot of the effort that can be done against it.

Its easy enough to get SMS numbers for free very quickly.

Its not cafes, all KR residents undergo this process for any online game available for local market.

On other side, in most cases foreigners have no access to KR games/servers. Blizzard is an exception.

Not as big as some would believe.
Yet your “solution” would also harm legitimate alt accounts.
Even so, people might just get a cheap phone and they can still do this. It solves nothing.

Throwing is already reportable.
As is boosting.

But just playing well is not reportable. That would be silly.
If anything, Blizz needs to be less scared to award a decent amount of SR each match.

A new phone number costs €5 in my place, but it’s full of virtual phone numbers you can get for €1 or even for free. Easily exploitable.

80% of the people I know have a smurf account. MMR should be calculated better I think.

Koreans have an identity card (with a unique id), but it’s easily exploitable as well.

I agree that it should have sms protect and it might help a little bit with the smurfing problem but honestly I don’t think it will make a huge difference

It probaby is but the more steps that’s required for someone to have fun by ruining the experience of others, I’d assume it would be a lot less inciting.

By not being a problem do you mean that both teams get them? I play in low masters and pretty much every game, each team has smurfs. And you never really know when they will flip the switch from being a “legitimate alt accounts” to just having enough and hard carrying on their main.

Despite throwing and boosting being reportable, plenty of people still find a way to soft throw without being reported for it so they can stay in low ranks. If their smurf accounts do get too high they’ll just get a new one.

As someone who does have 2 legitimate alt accounts as well, I don’t mind losing them for something like this. Also, if you are a legit alt account user there should be no problem with using the same number right?

Therefore they should just make it so that you have to make the verification everytime you wanna play ranked.

But then we get the people here “muh not everyone has a phone no thanks”.

Do you guys not have phones?

There are simpler solutions. Just increase the level requirement for comp to 100-150. It will discourage smurfing and it will be enough time to learn the game if you are new.

It will discourage smurfs as well as new players. There is no reason for people who are genuinly new to wait that long to play competitive. You get placed in a rank based on your abilities, even more so with the new 2-2-2 RQ, you might do some things wrong because you are new but everyone else who’s in that same rank really doesn’t have any right to complain because they are in that rank for a reason.

It is just a matter of time. You have bough the game so the comp mode isn’t going anywhere. On top of that you have 30+ heroes of interactions to learn.

It is, and depending on how much time you spend each day, that could be quite a lot time before you’ll be able to play the mode.

Thats not the point. It will still decease people from doing it.

It should be a mode for the dedicated players, shouldn’t it?
You have no place there is you don’t even know the basics.

Also you can get to lvl 100 in a matter of an event.

That’s a matter of perspective isn’t it, what does it matter if you have been dedicated for 1k+ hours but still play in a rank that someone who’s spent 20 something hours plays in as well?

Being new doesn’t mean you aren’t dedicated either.

A serious environment is the fastest way to learn in.

I call BULL on that.
