Competitive Mode - Instant Freeze and Suspension

I was just in a competitive group, queued for our first round and it acted as if the game was going to start and then it just sat there. Others in the group said “not again” and we all took losses and were suspended. What the heck? I have not had any issues like this at all but at least one of the members of the pre-existing group had experienced it just shortly before. So, I sit here, with an unearned loss and suspension from playing for 10 minutes. I pride myself in always respecting my competitive rounds and I wish Blizzard did the same. Is there anyway to find out why?

Was there any error message in the text chat such as “Failed to Connect to the Server”? If so, there may have been issues connecting to the game server between you and the game server. Try to avoid Competitive and test several games in quick play. Also, try running a WinMTR test to see if there are any known issues:

WinMTR instructions:

  1. Download WinMTR from Download WinMTR-v092.zip (WinMTR) (Console players need a Windows Desktop Computer connected to the same network as their console to do this.)
  2. Unzip the WinMTR.zip file to the Desktop.
  3. Open the WinMTR folder and select the 32 or 64 bit version. Choose whichever one corresponds to your version of Windows.
  4. Run the WinMTR.exe
  5. Type the IP address you want to trace in the “Host” field. To get the correct IP you will actually need to open up the game and go Practice Vs AI or Quick Play and if you are on PC hit Ctrl+Shift+N and it will bring up the ingame network diagnostic graph, or go to Video > Options > Display Network Performance Graph if you are on any platform including Console. In the top left corner is the IP address you want to run WinMTR to.
    Network Graph
note When looking at the IP it will show up ingame as something like 12.34.56.78:12345. You will want to leave the last 5 digits and the colon at the end off and the IP you want to use is just the 12.34.56.78
  6. Once you notice the connection issue while playing, play for about 6 more minutes, minimize the game and click on “Stop”.
  7. Click on “Copy text to clipboard”, then return to this forum thread.
  8. Type two sets of four squiggly lines and then paste the contents of the WinMTR test between: ~~~~ Paste WinMTR Test Results Here ~~~~

If in the event you can’t even connect to Overwatch and get into any game mode at all, please use one of the following IP addresses based on your geographical region:

  • US West - 24.105.30.129
  • US Central - 24.105.62.129
  • Brazil - 54.207.107.12
  • Europe - 185.60.114.159
  • Europe - 185.60.112.157
  • Korea - 211.234.110.1
  • Taiwan - 203.66.81.98

You will see that there are other reports around this same time, I do believe I saw the “Failed to Connect to the Server” as did everyone else in our group. I imagine we were all across the US on different network providers - we all registered a loss and suspension. I haven’t had this ever occur before and it didn’t occur afterward with a different group. I think it’s a bit rash to penalize the entire team in this fashion, the game hadn’t even begun and none of us knew each other prior to LFG. Anyway, I did see that others in the group posted similar messages perhaps in different categories - it was not isolated to one player but the whole team.

At least tell me who your ISP is. I do know that any ISP that uses level 3 as the backbone provider has been having issues all day.

My ISP is Cox Communications.

Hey levarnu,

Would you be able to get that MTR test so we can take a closer look? This will help us pinpoint any problems on the route.
