Competitive Issues... (Wanna talk to someone, please)

I just got two matches in a row where I try to be a shotcaller because I’m always stuck on support or tank as a fill player anyways… In these two matches my team starts yelling at me/flaming me for tanking competitive mode competitively. They were being more toxic than any people I’ve played with for nearly a year, and all because I tried to play a coordinated game of Overwatch. This type of stuff really frustrates me, because it almost feels like everyone in Overwatch below high Diamond/low Masters is either trying to piss you off enough to force you out of voice chat, or just screw up your matches… Idk, maybe I’m just crazy.

Stuff like this is what makes me think that the new Commendations system and the LFG features aren’t going to be enough. In my eyes, running a community of people who have the anonymity of the internet as a shroud of power one needs to take an approach akin to training a pet: occasionally/frequently reward the positive/wanted behavior, and always punish the negative/unwanted behavior.

Anyone else share any of my experiences/opinions on comp?

Pretty much everyone who jumps into a competitive have or will eventually experience something like this. It’s just how the competitive environment is. No matter how hard we try toxicity will be part of the game as well as everything else online.

My problem is a little more than what I defined in the post… This has been all of my last 10-15 matches. I just got on, played two, and got off because I just can’t take it.

There really isn’t much we can do. People are just prone to be toxic.

I came to Overwatch from arguably the second most toxic community in gaming, being CSGO (LoL being 1st)… So if Overwatch takes the cake over CSGO on toxicity levels its not just a community issue in my eyes, its a lack of (enough) action against it from the devs… I know its impossible to completely remove toxicity from the game, but you can sure get close to it by being more aggressive with the banhammer or start taking away SR as a very aggressive way to punish competitive players. Or just pull a LoL and start queuing toxic people with only toxic people over time…

The more recent updates seem to be focusing a lot of toxicity actually. Avoid as Teammate was added a few months ago and later an LFG system will be added hopefully reducing the frustration people have when in matches.

I play in this elo too and it’s just filled with smurfs/alts. So part of the problem is people don’t take it seriously on their alt accounts while you are. There is a disjunction in the different mindsets which cannot be resolved. You cannot make someone take a game seriously if they don’t want to. Even less so if they are on a smurf/alt account.

overwatch isnt toxic. there are just a lot of new gamers who haven’t gamed before and well they are here for the skins… anyways, basically just a bunch of thin shells waiting to break and have a mental breakdown and talk about how they are going to mute you, then proceed to have a conversation about how toxic that person was and how difficult it made your day. Meanwhile said person who was “Toxic” just aggressively said " WE HITSCAN INSTEAD OF DOOMFIST" etc etc etc. all the sudden someones feelings get hurt… you tell them they are an idiot for feeling emotionally distraught… everyone looks at you as a bad guy for telling someone who is crying they are an idiot… and GG u get 10 reports and one more person more likely to instantly snap at anything to at least earn his reports that he is going to get regardless.

For example some people are more likely to assault an officer because they feel like they are being unfairly harassed. The officer was just doing his job. Bystanders suddenly start rooting against the cop with no information about the situation. Mayor ends up suspending the cop for doing his job and drops charges against the culprit who wasn’t doing the right thing in the first place. Mostly because the culprit cried in teh right place with the right peers. meanwhile some peers would have given the culprit a kick and cheered on the cop leaving the culprit to really feel as if everyone is toxic and unjustly harrassing them.

I’m sorry, my dood. I think the upcoming endorsements feature will help, but it’s not perfect. I’ve had some pretty nasty experiences in comp, so at least know you’re not the only one who’s been verbally abused.

  1. Why are you even in voice chat? In Overwatch voice chat is just a it’s just a toxic cancerous mess.

  2. Nobody is forcing you to play support/tank. Play whatever you like and have your own fun.

Things only became frustrating after competitive mode launched and people started taking the game seriously, something it was never designed for.

Don’t worry about what your teammates are doing. It’s completely out of your control. Focus on having your own fun.

You’re not crazy, but I do think you’re tricking yourself. It’s normal for people to forget the good and exaggerate the bad. I climbed through Platinum on two accounts this season, pure solo queue, and most of my games were with people who wanted to win and were open to having a shot caller. If 100 people are nice to you in a day, and just one person is a dick, you’re going to remember the dick. That’s just how humans roll.

I was around in the beginning, and this is simply not true. Hell, toxicity still exists in Quickplay. That’s just a problem inherent in games that allow you to play with random people online.

This is also not true. Me performing well on my role, in my case usually main tank or support, means my teammates can perform better on theirs. If I don’t create space as a tank then my DPS are less likely to be able to secure eliminations, and if I don’t survive and keep my teammates up as support then nobody is likely to do anything.

Nowhere near as much as competetive, simply because nobody cares in quickplay. The same mentality should (ideally) apply in competitive to keep things fun and light-hearted, but some people have decided that Overwatch is worth taking seriously. More power to them…but if those people get frustrated, then it’s entirely their fault and I hope they realize that.

I meant teammates who do basically nothing, or pick low-tier heroes, or just leave. It’s all out of your control.

Probably because humans are competitive by nature, and they’re different modes. If you play competitive, it should be because you’re competitive and you find enjoyment in that.

If you’re going into competitive and not trying to win, then no, that would be your fault.

Thankfully that doesn’t happen in most games, otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to climb how I have.

The only people who are frustrated and complaining about comp are the ones ones who are trying to take the game seriously, which something it was never designed for.

Yeah, why would anyone take a game seriously that was designed around the mechanical skill of FPS being combined with the game sense and strategic thinking of a MOBA?

No idea how anyone could have made that mistake.

Lmao. Most heroes in this game have either auto-aim abilities or auto-aim ultimates. Yeah it takes so much “mechanical skill” to get multiple kills simply by holding down the fire button (or pressing Q) into a Graviton. People hitting their Q button together is usually what decides the outcome of most matches.

Mechanical skill and strategic thinking…good joke buddy.

Ah, right. Because no one gets any kills outside of ability and ult usage. I forgot. Tracer absolutely dominating for 9 seasons didn’t happen because she’s a hero with a high skill ceiling and a lot of reward; she dominated because you could throw out pulse bombs every 5 seconds and they would float their way onto the nearest enemy.

Getting good usage out of a graviton would fall under game sense. Being able to build gravitons quickly requires both mechanical skill and game sense.

And how are you going to combine ults if the other team is constantly killing your teammates? What use is an earthshatter if you just waste it into a shield? What use is a graviton if you have no idea whether the enemy D.Va has defense matrix up, or Zen has trans?
