Shadow step is positioning ability. If we need to compare it, we should take another positioning ability, like:
Shadow step vs. Translocator
or reasons why shadowstep sux
- Requires LOS on point
- Have longer cooldown
- Have long cast time and you can’t do anything while casting and you are vulnerable for 3 seconds without damage reduction are any other saving things
- Require Reaper to stand on ground
- Can’t teleport in air points (like above your enemy)
- No i-frame windows. For example - Sombra can use her translocator to evade Self-Destuct damage
- Can’t “mark” teleportation point and actually teleport whenever you want
- Louder and have brighter effects
Advantages over Translocator: NONE
I don’t say that Reaper is utter garbage. His Shadow step is.

His shadowstep isn’t for flashing back to safety.
It’s for crossing gaps and chokepoints unseen. Crossing streets away from the line of fire. To get behind the enemy, not away from them. their purposes are polar opposites. You shouldn’t be teleporting to a visible open space anyway.
However, it could stand to be a little shorter cast time.

As i posted in another thread, Symmetra rework tp is what reaper wanted. It is very fast and spammable once up. She is a close range flanker who destroys tank. She not handicap if she is far away, using her orb shot.
Shadowstep is just far too slow to be used mid-combat. Most of Reaper playstyle is hide-&-pounce.
Due to how mobile Symmetra is, she pretty much does reaper job better. Only different is their ult. One is offensive while the other is defensive.
Oh wow. You can use Translocator for same things. And even more and even better
It’s not supposed to be used mid combat.
And if you do, what escape option do you have? People can see you throw the translocator, you know.
Translocator fits in a kit designed to use translocator. If reaper had translocator, he’d be OP.
Unseen, but definitely heard lmao
yeah, if you’re appearing right next to them. They lowered the volume on it for that reason.
No, it’s still very loud regardless. It makes no sense why he’s screaming out like that.
It’s slow, loud, has big visible animations. They really should improve it.

Again…big and flashy because it’s not supposed to be used mid-combat. If they can see you teleport, then it’s your fault for doing it where they can see you. If they can hear it, then you did a bad job by appearing within 10m of them (or I think it might be 15m).
Good positioning so i won’t be headbutted by enemy team after translocation? At least - for 5-6 seconds. Actually, all pro-sombras i saw use translocator not for “drop at healthpack”, but for positioning, taking highround, etc.
Reaper have Shadow step, that don’t really fits his kit? How can he follow-up his shadow step? You just position yourself from one safe place to other. You can’t use it mid-battle to engage or to escape.
Yeah you can tp on highround and drop down with Death Blossom, but that’s all
And yet Symmetra can?
Wraith form has its limitation as an escape tool. Unless they make it so that he can fly in wraith form, being able to escape to higher ground mid-fight is better.
They need to make his wraith form allow flying, or increase his shadowstep speed.
Symmetra is too squishy to be a flanker. Reaper has 250 health, wraith form, a healing passive, and instant damage. Saying something like sym is doing reapers job just isn’t true when reaper has all these things that keep him relevant,
No…you don’t use it mid-battle to escape, that’s what wraith form is for.
You use it to gain better positioning for the initiative. Reaper is countered by walking away from him so he can’t get close. But if you position yourself before hand so you’re already close/flanking, they have no way to run effectively.
Tracer is also squishy, your point?
I never say Reaper was irrelevant. Symmetra can flank well, but their ults are different. If your team comp ults are mostly cc, you will want reaper instead of Symmetra ult for that burst damage. If your team comp consist of dps with damage ult, Symmetra is better.
Again… tracer has blinks, instant recall, and instant damage. You can’t just say hero names and think that justifies what you’re saying
Symmetra can spam her teleport if they ignore her teleport. If they focus her teleport, she can melt the enemy. But the most important part, she enable her whole team to teleport.
Reaper can only teleport himself.
Reaper is countered by standing more than 5 meters from him. Shadowstep won’t give you ability to reach that range.
And again. You can use it for repostiioning from one SAFE spot to another SAFE spot. You can’t use it for engagement. You can’t use it for escape. You can’t use it in fights.
So why it has whole TEN seconds cooldown. Let’s take other 10 sec cooldown abilities:
- Flashbang - AOE stun that can be followed up by 140 damage headshot or/and FTH
- Jump Jet - Allows Pharah to reach sky. One of her main mobility tools and her kit is built around flying.
- (deceased) Scatter arrow - instant 400 damage that ignores armor
- Steel trap - deals 80 damage, stuns and roots target that steps on it. Also can be followed with 120 (instakill 200 hp target) damage explosion and also you will be easy target for bombs
- Ice wall - pretty big wall that can cover line of sight for enemy team, cancel some ultimates, etc
- Fortify - 50% damage reduction and full CC immunity. Giant hitbox allows Orisa to use this ability to cover allies or her supercharger
- Charge - great mobility tool for Reinhard that can be also used to pin one target and slam it to wall with 300 damage
- Self-bubble - 200 hp barrier, that gives bonus damage to Zarya if damaged and allies can cover behind it
- Biotic grenade - one of greatest utility basic abilities in the game - anti-healing, bonus healing splash heal and damage
- Biotic orb - Moira can use it to heal while damaging or damage while healing, or double healing or damage
All these abilities at least can be used in battle - some extremely valuable and give so much opportunities for their users. Some abilites are foundation for hero’s kit.
Reaper’s tp is garbage if you compare value you gain from it with value you gain from every other ability above

I would love to see reaper be able to fly in wraith form or teleport into the air and drop down from above.
I laugh imagining reaper teleport above pharah and drop down to pounce her and wraith form to fly away, lol.
Reaper Needs the same exact abilty that Rogues have in WoW called Shadowstep.
Shadowstep
25 yd range
Instant
30 sec recharge
1 Charges
Requires Rogue (Assassination, Subtlety)
Requires level 22
Step through the shadows to appear behind your target and gain 70% increased movement speed for 2 sec.
and less visible fx and even quieter sound fx. even when I’m being sneaky they either see or hear me from a distance
