Cheating: how a large minority spoils it for the rest

Blizzard needs to do something about the growing minority (10-20%) who are cheating in Overwatch and ruining what would otherwise be a half decent experience for the rest.

Until it’s brought under control, it’s a complete waste of time as if you watch back, half or more of your matches are being determined by that one or two players per game that decides to troll by cheating.

If you take a look at some of Flats more recent posts you can get a sense of what it’s like now.

It just makes a laughing stock of the game when you claim to have 100M players and 10-20% of the players cheat.

The crazy part is that most cheating goes unnoticed and players are in denial. Also so many accounts are created by smurf and former cheaters.

Overwatch doesn’t have 100 million players, or it wouldn’t have queue times like you see now. Cheaters exist because a lot of people are trash IRL, so they’re even worse when using the anonymity of a free to play game account. You can’t really solve the problem with just anticheat, and modern cheats are so advanced they will look like good gameplay unless the person using them is either low IQ or not worried about making some rage style aimbotting.

Most legit Overwatch players don’t even know how to distinguish a good player from a cheater, so often they’ll just think nothing of it. But you can be sure that for every rage hacker there are 1000 closet cheaters and the majority of them will use wallhacks.

The denial is the funniest part, its across like all FPS games.

(srsly take a look at pubg, its hilarious how people excuse blatant cheats)

Cheaters make competitive play a joke, that is true.

At the same time though cheaters lost in this game, a lot. And it’s hilarious to watch or participate in destroying a cheater.

It was way easier in 6v6 though to shut cheaters down.

Gotta be demoralizing knowing even when you cheat you can’t always carry in this game

I don’t deny we have a big cheater issue right now… but where did we get the ‘10%-20%’ ballpark from?

Well, when they were doing banwaves THEY estimated they banned 20% of the T500. Given what I see, cheating is worse now, I see one or two in every match or other match. So it’s a ballpark based on that. You think it’s too high, low?

Be careful making posts about cheaters. A large portion of forum users are cheaters and will report your post

Dude like you can go in-game and calculate the number yourself. Between 5-15% of each role is a confirmed cheater in Top 500 each season. That’s confirmed and so FAR to date. The number per past season grows over time as previously undetected cheaters are discovered and banned.

I don’t have a strong opinion on the number itself. I was just wondering if Blizz had released some data on the scope of the issue, which would be absolutely wild if they did tbh.

I can imagine the issue being more ‘pronounced’ the higher up the ladder you go, because you’re dealing with a smaller pool of players at the extremely high end of the bellcurve. So 20% of t500 (100 people) magically disappearing in the banwave would make sense.

You give my maths skills way too much credit.

Is this confirmed by Blizzard? I’m not asking because I don’t believe it, I’m asking because it would be nice for them to release concrete numbers (as opposed to stick their fingers in their proverbial ears and go ‘lalalalala not listening.’)

It’ll always be a cat and mouse game. Cheaters multiply, ban wave hits, rinse and repeat.

I like how the nightowl hours cheating is starting to spill over into the prime time hours, maybe now blizzard will start to pay attention.

Probably not though.

That simply isn’t the case any more. There are too many people too good at hiding it now.

As the techniques for hiding cheats advance, so too do the techniques for detecting cheats. It’s no different than PC’s where it’s malware producers vs malware defenders.

Just because you can’t look at how someone is playing and immediately understand “oh, they’re cheating” doesn’t mean that software which is specifically designed to detect it will fail to do so.

And don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying you’re entirely off base… there are some frighteningly sophisticated hacks out there, but they’re only as good as the latest detection methods.

For example… many cheat producers sell products that they know will last only a max of maybe 24hrs before it’s detected and banned, and you know what? People still pay for that ish lol… to many players, apparently, 24hrs of fun is worth the price of admission.

Game is more or less unplayable now both QP and comp. Majority of games are cheat diffs and it feels as if it’s getting progressively worse every day. Games with cheaters are far more common than games without them.

Outplay the enemy team the first round - they toggle ragehacks and roll you in the 2nd. Get a few kills on someone- they swap to Cassidy/Hanzo/Sombra toggle ragehacks and focuse you entire match. Queue as a tank - game already starts with entire enemy team hardcountering you. Finally manage to outplay a cheater stack due to their absolute lack of gamesense and there are only seconds left till assured victory – they crash the server. Use ult – immediately slept/hacked/shattered the exact moment you press the button.

The funny thing about these script-loving losers is that having multiple massive advantages against you is never enough. They need all the possible advantages, crutches, loser protection they can get. Most of these losers always cheat as group and pick your hardcounters from the start, but that is not enough, they need their loser friends to watch their back all the time and save their abilities in case they receive some tickle damage so they can pull them out.

Point is that if they don’t start mass banning cheaters now within a season or two this game will be abandonware. No bs updates, new cosmetics or maps will save this cheaterfest of a game.

I wouldn’t say “unplayable” but it’s just not very fun to play when you run into so many hackers or well “CHEATERS” because they aren’t even hackers, giving them even that title is too much for them because being a hacker especially a white hat hacker is something that takes time, takes practice and you actually have to know what you are doing, Downloading a stupid program someone else designed for 5$+ doesn’t make you a hacker it makes you a cheater and a poor sport plain and simple they are just people who can’t play worth a crap who decided they needed to have to download something so they can try to have an advantage over others let’s not sugar coat anything. They are terrible players who chose to do so because they wanted to take the easy road and instead of learning from their mistakes and a loss, they chose to just cheat their way to higher ranks/the top. Because they have huge ego’s and are narcissistic.

no offense to anyone but I will never sugar coat what I say and it’s because I hope and pray for change it’s sad seeing what gaming has divulged into. People so worried/craving to be the next big thing they will do devious things just to get there faster. It’s So frustrating where there’s no pride in it anymore, in skill, in the time investment of learning everything.

how do most people even know their opponents are cheating?

kill cams/PotG are far too short to be able to know anything. I’ve had widow PoGs where I had 4 kills in 4 shots, should everyone just assume I was cheating?

I can’t imagine anyone actually wasting their time watching a full game replay just to see if someone else is cheating

it depends on the situation if they are super obvious kill cams, but if they are literally under Masters and completely slaughtering your team and you look at replays and their aim looks off or they stare at people through walls that’s the best way to tell. Most people aren’t just out right spin botting anymore unless they are just out right rage hacking. A lot of people are using better stuff nowadays that’s harder to detect/notice. A lot of it’s more soft aim locking, walling, and there’s another one but I don’t even know the name of it but I heard it was a new one.

I watch my replays usually to learn from my games, my mistakes/deaths like how could i improve and if I was noticing stuff during the game ill look into it more but it just depends.

Yeah, surely it’s either a sense of frustration at all the other cheats (ie: meta-cheating/arms-race) or pure and simple boredom-gone-trolling using hacks-for-giggles?

You can tell you’re a veteran. This is exactly how it is. It’s interesting that people like Flats have gone on to show this sort of cheating in action now as they’ve (seemed to) lost any sort of confidence the game will improve.

You know @Mistikas… saying this kind of thing would have gotten you trolled off the forum not 6 months ago… now it’s what so many are saying on the forums now they’ve finally learned to see it from the various posts and videos online. Not to mention the egregious volume of cheating as you say.

Crazy times. But I suppose it was bound to go there with Blizzard doing little to nothing effective about it.

Guess it’s RIP.

Its closer to 5-10% and even then only at the highest ranks. At ranks lower than that it is closer to 1-2%. I know its a good coping mechanism to pretend cheaters are in every game you play but they are not.
