Changes to Weekly Challenges / Making Progress Challenge

So with the start of season 6 and the addition of character progression there is now a new weekly challenge called Making Progress. This means there are a total of 13 weekly challenges you can complete.

Additionally in order to max out the premium currency earnable from weekly challenges, you now need to complete 12 challenges instead of 11.

There have been a few changes to the weeklies since Overwatch 2 launch. I think most of them have been great quality of life improvements. Some challenges have been reworked or replaced.

Prior to season 6 I felt like the weeklies were pretty reasonable to to complete in 7 days just by playing the game as I always do.

However I have serious concerns over how the new Making Progress Challenge scales over time.

It was really easy to complete Making Progress the first week. I play a variety of modes, especially to get all the other challenges, I earned levels on multiple characters. Of course all of my characters were starting out at level 1 at the start of the season.

Here’s the thing though. To earn level 2 on any character only requires 2000 xp. So let’s say you get 8 characters to level 2. That’s 16000/week. But level 3 requires 4000 (32000/week). Level 4 is 8000 (64000), 5 is 12000 (96000), etc.

So each level requires an additional 4000 xp from the previous ones. That means unless you avoid playing certain characters (which I do, but mostly because I don’t enjoy playing them), gaining new levels each week will take more and more play time on those characters.

I earned a bunch of levels on my regular characters after completing last week’s weekly. This week is already going much slower that last week. I think it will only get harder to complete every week.

I’m really hoping you consider reworking this challenge away from levels. Maybe doing something based on how progression XP earned instead? Say something like 20k or 25k instead of the 8 levels it is right now. That would be similar to when you went from wins to games played.

Or just go back to requiring the same number of challenges to give people more options how they max out the weekly. This would allow you to miss 2 challenges each week and still get the 60 credits.

Otherwise this new challenge is going to require increasingly more time to earn as the weeks go on. They are already super stingy with how much of the premium currency you can earn without paying, this seems like that final 10/week will turn into a massive grind.

Gosh, I’m considering only getting 50 gold this week because of this…

It seems they didn’t think it through or they did, but they put it there momentarily (which I guess it was not the case).

Yeah this is a very poor design of a challenge. I thought it was an issue immediately when I saw it.

Do we know if the progression requirement increase caps yet? Because right now my highest hero is level 17 and it’s jumping up by 4k xp every level. I think at some point it will have to cap because it’d be pretty insane if it didn’t.

No idea if the amount of XP will cap. You’re way higher on character levels than I am.

I’m trying to remember how the account levels worked. If I recall each level was the same amount of xp for every level basically infinity.

Personally I don’t have a problem if they make it really hard to max out the character levels. I just want a weekly challenge that is roughly the same amount of effort each week to achieve.

Yeah this challenge should be adjusted to be unaffected by how high your current levels are, it paradoxically becomes more punishing for dedicated players over time

If the challenge was a fixed amount of *progression XP instead of a number of levels (since each level requires more and more XP over time) it would be much healthier IMO

(EDIT: i meant progression XP, not battle pass XP)

Any update on this one… Pls reduce the number of levels to 4 or 5 or just finished 11 challenges in total… I’m at the point where getting those last 3 levels of progression is such a grind I might not do this all together Pls dev team thinks about the long term effect of the challenges the higher your level the harder is it to level… Don’t punished your loyal fanbase adjust this challenge…
