While I agree on some degree with this I think the Mcree ingame stood for something different. The heros on the Overwatch team stood for a bright future and the idea of heros still existing. What some vile degen did relates nothing to who mcree is. Not a big deal though he as a hero hasnt changed.

true but I think as players its important to remember that we are more distanced from the situation than Team 4 members and it was their decision to push the name change not Blizz

Nothing stops you from using mcree as the name.

The only thing you canā€™t change is the devs decisions to not have this name used when talking about the hero. Which they manifested with a ingame name change (helping them probably with not having the name in filenames etc.)

Nobody is allowed to stop you from using whatever name you want for whatever hero.
Its your decision.

Yes we ā€œgrew upā€ with the old name but that has no value, iā€™m sure blizzard might mention the names when looking back at owā€™s history. But not when looking forward.

And never forget the name means nothing.
If he was named thomas the tank engine, he would still be a cowboy clicking your head.

I always called him McCree, even after change, in the matches, even others call him cree still.

Yeah, I have yet to see/hear anyone call him Cassidy. Seems to only be a forum thing.

Itā€™s fineā€¦ let sleeping dogs lie. We donā€™t need the screen to say ā€œMcCreeā€ for us to keep referring to him as such on the mic, in chat or on the forums.

Find a way to incorporate it into your username or gamertag if it means so much to you.

It makes the developers uncomfortable to keep using it because they actually know the dude McCree was named after. So thatā€™s totally understandable and respectable.

you know the real reason they changed the name is because they needed to distract people from what was happening behind the scenes?
The change was greenlit way too fast, before anything about the real mccree had even really been proved.

that said i genuinely donā€™t care about the name change. I just hate that this is yet another move that would be fair if removed from the context. Like gay soldier, ehich happend just as blizzard was going through some other drama

Good GOD bro, get over it. Honestly, this garbage controversy is annoying and getting old. The dang character was named after a sexual abuser, granted the character Mcree didnā€™t have anything to do with it, Blizzard isnā€™t changing it back and you need to start excepting that instead of begging for a change to Microsoft, people who arenā€™t even ā€œin chargeā€ until 2023. No one is stopping you from calling him Mcree.

I think people need to realize the change wasnā€™t about players, Blizzard doesnā€™t care what you call the funny cartoon cowboy character. Thatā€™s why they didnā€™t ban ā€œMccreeā€ in game or on the forums.

The change was literally just so the staff at Blizzard donā€™t have to see the name of the guy who was a creep whenever they work on the game. Less time they spend worrying about things that happened to them in the workplace, the more time they can spend working on OW2.

No one is enshrining an abuser. Only you and your pals who demonize names are. Actually its only thanks to name change that i know who the guy even is :roll_eyes:.

Thereā€™s a guy with both my first and last name who was caught smuggling a bunch of drugs and guns. Am i going to change my name over it? No, because thatā€™s dumb idea and everyone knows im not the same guy or enshrining him.

I actually do call him Cassidy because I think if there are new players because of OW2 for instance I donā€™t want to confuse them by using the old name. My gf always gets mad when I donā€™t call him McCree :grin:.

Still possible I accidentally use the old name. Itā€˜s still on my mind hard to erase.
