Neither of us are placed yet. Did they add restrictions counting last seasons SR? I was low masters, he was just below diamond.
It’s not really documented well (I only noticed it looking at the tier breakdown for Competitive), but they did start applying the hidden MMR to check to see if you are allowed to group up. The old rules of who can group up with who for placement matches no longer applies. In your case, a Masters trying to play with a Platinum player would be ineligible.
Well that’s some bullshti right there. If the system doesn’t allow ranked players outside a certain range to queue together - fine. But if nobody has even placed yet?! I thought the final SR ranking from placements is supposed to be individual and independent from win/loss anyways? :^)
Seriously, at this point the whole ranked system is just a giant gamble between useless placements, shady matchmaking and random SR gain/loss.
As far as I know, it does look at your SR from your previous season to see if you can group up with someone for competitive.
I’ve also encountered a situation in which I was playing with a 6 stack which included a player in bronze, players in silver, players in gold, and one completely new, unplaced account. After about 5 games, it told us we couldn’t group for competitive anymore, even though none of us had moved outside of range of the players who were farthest apart. When the unplaced account left the stack, we could queue for comp again. Oddly, when she finished her placements, she placed low gold. It was confusing for everyone.
Yes they started looking at last season’s final rank because some unranked t500s would queue with gold players and drag them into high diamond/master matches.
