Can't get 144 FPS on decent laptop setup

I apologize in advance if this is in the wrong forum, but I’m getting pretty fed up with my gaming laptop as of late. Firstly, I would just like to add I only use a gaming laptop because it was a gift from a relative that had superior specs to my old desktop, so I transitioned to gaming on it now.

Basic specs for my setup is as follows:
Display: 144hz laptop display & 60 hz monitor
CPU : Intel® Core™ i7-9750H CPU @ 2.60GHz
RAM: 16 GB DDR4 RAM
Video Card : GeForce RTX 2060

I’m not exactly super knowledgeable of computer hardware, but all I do know is that the setup listed here would, atleast I would assume, to be more than capable of achieving 144 fps consistently on a game like Overwatch. Yet, when in practice, when I play games, I get about 90-115 FPS outside of fights, and about 60-80 in fights, and it seriously messes with my aim sometimes. In the most extreme cases, it reaches 45 FPS at the absolute lowest if i’m recording or capturing my gameplay. I don’t want to make this forum post an essay, so last thing i’ll add is that my CPU temps remain at around 88 - 95 C during gameplay and GPU usually always stays at 60-65. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe you have wrong graphic setting?

Check this

Should be in tech support. Plus this is an entry level setup not high-end.
Also we dont know your setting or resolution.

Cpu might be throttling with those temps, use msi afterburner to check gpu usage.

Wait what? 88-95, thats deadly temeperature on pc, so I would guess its not good on laptop too.

how silly of me to forget, I use low settings on everything except high texture quality, 16x texture filtering, and medium shadow quality w/ render scale 100%.

also thanks for clarifying, i’ll edit the tile as to not mislead

Gaming laptops are notorious for running at super hot temps. Ramming loadss of hot hardware into a little flat box just doesnt work

That’s a problem. Drop it to 75%.

That’s a discrete GPU, are you certain that is what you have in the laptop? The 9750H uses internal gfx ( Intel UHD Graphics 630 ). You might want to look into that.

Dropping the render scale will increase your FPS and reduce the heat on your CPU which can also improve performance.

Since you got the laptop secondhand you may also want to look into cleaning out the vents with canned air.

ONLY IF YOU ARE COMFORTABLE WITH THIS STUFF:
You can also get increased performance by closing programs via task manager and running Windows 10 debloater script.

I checked some links and based on what i read, that high temperature is no good consistently even for laptop.

I’d be willing to bet it throttles at ~90c.

I’m 100% certain I am using the RTX 2060 to render graphics instead of the integrated graphics. I’ll try dropping to 75 but everytime i’ve tried it looked horrendous. Guess it’s a sacrifice i’ll have to make.

Nope, things will probably start to throttle at those temps

Check your graphics settings. Lower them.
Make sure your laptop can actually vent.
When CPU temps are high the CPU throttles itself so it can lower the temps.

What’s the best way to allow the laptop to vent for best airflow and lowest temps possible?

Okay, after doing a bit more research on your specific gfx card I’ve pretty much come to the conclusion that you aren’t getting 144fps without sacrificing render scale. (or doing something like overclocking your GPU)

The RTX 2060 (for laptops) is about the same as a 1070, if not slightly better.

The system appears to be a quality 60fps machine but isn’t great above that.

https://www.techspot.com/review/1804-geforce-rtx-2060-laptop/ is the article that I looked at.

He’s at full low except for some textures.

They make cooling pads for laptops that you just sit it on if that’s something you’d want to look into.

Don’t place it on surfaces that absorb heat.

I honestly had no idea these things even existed. Seeing as how with just surface level research it’s obvious these temperatures are extremely harmful to longevity of the laptop components, I am 100% looking into getting one.

i have a feeling you might be using the integrated graphics, you have to find a way to force your graphics card to be used while playing overwatch

Is it dual channel or just 1 stick?

Disconnect your external 60hz monitor when you’re playing. It only saps precious system resources.

60hz monitor is your problem. And processor gone die at those temps. As long as your fps is 60 and above your arm will not be impacted. You’re affecting your own aim fps has nothing to do with it.
