Can't connect to server on Ethernet, on one computer

hello, I’m having some trouble tracing this issue.

I cannot connect to the game when using the ethernet line for one of my PCs. The internet works fine otherwise, and other games load fine.

Here are some observations which could help:

  • If I use WIFI (and disconnect ethernet line), I can connect fine (and it’s the same network)

  • If I use my other PC, which also has OW on it, even on ethernet, it works fine (same network)

  • I’ve tested this account on my other computer without issue

  • This happened just after receiving a new modem/router for my home internet. The game used to load up just fine with ethernet on this computer. I think it’s obvious this had to have triggered something. I’ve restored factory settings on the modem/router. There is no special treatment of this ethernet port, nor the others.

In the end, everything I’ve tried - completely disabling windows firewall, changing port forwarding on the router, checking windows settings, etc. same result: I’m stuck on “Connecting to Game Server…” in the Overwatch application, forever.

Any advice would be highly appreciated. I recognize it can’t be an OW-side issue, because I can connect to it fine with other PC on my network, but maybe you’ve seen this issue before and can help. Thanks.

Can you connect to the internet on that computer or is it just OW that is affected?

Correct, I’m on that computer now, on ethernet. No problem loading up this page or any other, I can play other games. It’s just Overwatch specifically gets stuck on “Connecting to Game Server…”. It is able to begin a connection within Overwatch, but stalls out there.

Have you tried using command prompt and typing the following?

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns

Bear in mind if you haven’t this will kick your computer from the internet temporarily so don’t do it while in the middle of downloading something.

I did try that earlier, but to be sure, tried it again, and issue still there :frowning:

Out of interest how up to date are the network drivers on that computer?

I think you’re onto something!

The Gigabyte update software seems to have trouble pushing through a specific update to my Aquantia 10gb/s LAN port. My mobo has another ethernet port available, a standard 1gb/s one and after trying that port, I can connect to the game!

I’ll try an alternative way to obtain the latest driver for my 10gb/s ethernet port, but in the meantime I don’t think the 1gb/s port will kill me to use.

Wow, thank you so much!

No problem. The biggest pain is that if it is indeed the port on your mobo that has for some reason decided to give up the go, repairing it, even under warranty, can leave you without a working PC for quite some time, I know from experience. I hope for your sake its just a software problem and not some form of underlying hardware issue.

Based on that port working just fine 3 days ago, I think there is some new incompatibility that was introduced when I got my new modem. Maybe the driver would fix it. Our last modem was having issues, so att sent us a new model. That was the exact moment when this issue started.

Well lets hope for the best.

This problem is caused by outdated Aquantia/Marvell drivers.
Unfortunately the newest driver isn’t obvious to get.
You probably have 21.18.0. The driver that fixes this bug is 21.21.0.

You can get it here for your OS.
Go to marvell DOT com and go to the downloads section.

(I had the exact same problem with the 21.18.0 driver. 21.21.0 fixes Overwatch completely. There are a number of bug reports in the readme showing buffer overrun fixes and some stuff.
