In Overwatch 2, allowing players to prevent others from reviving them introduces a strategic layer that enhances gameplay dynamics. This feature empowers players with agency over their own fate, fostering a deeper sense of accountability and decision-making within the team. By enabling individuals to decline revival, it encourages thoughtful consideration of the battlefield situation, whether it’s to respawn closer to the objective, swap heroes for better team composition, or prevent feeding ultimate charge to the enemy. Additionally, it adds an element of skill expression as players must weigh the risks and benefits of accepting revival, promoting a more nuanced and tactical approach to teamwork. Ultimately, incorporating this mechanic not only enriches the gameplay experience but also promotes a more strategic and engaging environment for Overwatch 2 players.
if there is one thing I’ve learned across my life it is that the common man is a fool who doesnt deserve agency over their own fate
They’re coming… Get ready…
The cavalry have arrived.
It would hurt the game more then help.
Dota2 has a similar feature, its stops your team from effecting your hero. Its purpose it to give a tool to help with trolls.
However it still doesnt turn off all interations. There are many that you cant prevent as it would make some heros/abiltes useless.
And even then the system causes more harm then good.
In my ~5K hours of the game, ive used the ability only a handfull of times to deal with trolls. But ive encounted a uncountable number of times where I go to save someone, but they have it enabled, resulting in me unable to save them and them dying.
Sysyems like that are bad.
You can argue that mercy should get a cancel button, but others cancling the ability create way more issues then it solves
I’d love this.
A lot of my deaths are intentional(to prevent staggering generally) and reviving me kinda ruins the reason I died in the first place. Most rezes I receive are times I genuinely don’t want to be.
Huh! What a novel, really cool idea! Being able to reject Mercy from rezzing you. I would have never thought…
But don’t just stop there! Because, in Mercy’s typical gameplay, she likely expended and/or diverted resources getting to your corpse (GA, stopped healing/DBing others), is currently standing there making herself a ripe target to be shot at, and was going to fly away or heal/boost you upon revival. She was counting on the distraction and extra firepower you would have offered by letting her to complete her rez on you.
So, that said, what kind of compensation by an allied-canceled rez do you propose that could be applied to let her survive that?
(Not to mention, she should be refunded her ability cooldown time to use again on another ally if a friendly player is going to outright deny her current attempt. After all, thirty seconds between ability usage is an eternity in Overwatch time!)
I assume it wouldn’t be something you turn on or off in the settings, just a button you press during rez to deny it. Like if the Mercy is rezing you into what would be an instant 2nd death. I also assume she would keep the rez to use again or have a greatly reduced cooldown if you deny to take the rez.
Im just really hessitant as ive seen the bad that comes from features like this.
It could work if implmented right, just ive yet to see it done right
Canceling an active resurrect attempt would be terrible, and prone to trolling.
A better options would be a button that popped up immediately upon someone’s death, which only lasted 3 seconds, that said “do not resurrect” in the middle of their screen. Hitting it would turn their death icon red, so their Mercy would quickly know not to divert resources and time to them, yet allow her to work off their corpse, and GA off of it if needed, but Resurrect would not activate when clicked.
That little window in time, would let those that know they want to swap, an easy way to guarantee they can, but would prevent someone from trolling Mercy, if say the window in time were open longer.
And lastly, if Mercy somehow miraculously managed to get to you in that 3 second window and clicks resurrect before they click “don’t”, they are coming up. OR as an alternate option, it cancels the resurrect immediately, midcast, releases Mercy from her slow, and resets the ability (as well as her GA) back to ready to use. No harm, no foul.
That’s how this Mercy main would handle it.
They should just get rid of revive and make Mercy an actually decent support
No. Rez is too iconic to Mercy to simply get rid of entirely. It’s a big part of what makes playing her fun, next to her beams and GA flight.
Want to envision Mercy without revive? Then dream up a kit for an entirely new hero and leave her alone.
Oh I had an old idea of making it like halo you attach to targets like a zen orb.
And if the player dies while it’s up will get “Rezed” .
This stays up for about 3 seconds. Then rez goes a considerably shorter cooldown of about 12 seconds or so. The rez it’s self is slower, taking about 5 seconds for the player to return to the game. Giving time for the enemy to work around the rezed player for counter play.
It’s now a something that requires timing and prep, and gives a clear warning when it’s up. And no longer being an full undo button.
And yet Lifeweaver and Mei exist just fine…
When you play a team game you are implicitly giving up your agency over your face as your death negatively affects your team.
It’s my ability, I use it however I want. If you don’t wanna get rezzed then stop dying.
I thought this was going to be about Mercy being allowed to cancel revive during casting and I was on board.
In the immortal words of Geoff Goodman: “That sounds like a really cool idea for a new hero!”
Na the issue being we can’t have two heroes that rez at all. It’s a very specific game flow breaking mechanic. That can be frustating the play around with.
1 is fine as it is now, two on a team is rather iffy to say the least.
So it can’t be new hero.
They do that already by moving to far away mid rez…
