Everytime there’s a rank reset in comp, it just messes things up with matchmaking. And it causes a poor experience in placements. I understand why they are done, but they seem to do more harm than good.
Right now nobody trusts the matchmaker, and the rank reset actually makes that perception worse because it legitimately makes the matchmaking wonkier.
Letting people keep their ranks, take a break for 2 seasons and then play like plat in GM is not the benefit you think it is. Rank resets should be every season, because thats the reason why games have seasons in the first place. Every 6 months is just a poor excuse to say “we have resets”.
In terms of MM, its an OW issue, because there are so many variables, that have less to do with skill of a player and mainly game circumstance, that the MM cant see past “relative skill level in all scenarios”. It cant be more accurate.
it’s completely pointless because all you end up doing is playing placements with the same people you’d otherwise play against, then after you rank 5+ tiers below your usual, you’re still playing with/against those same ranks you would be. Makes even less sense for high ranks. I’ve had M1 vs Champ 5 games
The quality of placement matches is atrocious in my experience, to the point that I haven’t even bothered opening Comp this season. I’ll wait for the next 6v6 mode at mid-season and pray that its own placement matches aren’t complete stomps.
This one definitely feels different than the last ones probably because of the rank redistribution and “anti smurfing” changes.
You can place as high as champion on a new account apparently which has its own issues but does mean the system is trying to get people to their rank much faster than before
Anecdotally, after placements my matches have been mostly fine, if not easy, but it feels less brutal than the s12 reset (though that one made low masters t500 for months and crunched every other rank)
The rank distribution was so screwed up previously and they said they had to do resets to fix that at the very least.
Actually the problem is that it’s a soft reset. Most of the time people just end up relatively where they left off unless there is some series rust going on and they lose like every match. We need the game to get to a good state, a constant if you will, and then when a good majority of the population is relatively happy with the game we got, we need a hard reset to ensure people are where they actually belong. This too will be pretty bad at first, but after a month or so it’ll level out and I do believe we will have the better matchmaking afterwards for it
Except the problem we have right now is exactly what you say resets should avoid. They are actually causing that issue where plats are being matched with Top 500 players.
That gives me some hope for the upcoming 6v6 Comp mode, at least.
Matchmaking in a 6v6 “open queue” mode is my biggest fear with the mode because if that’s screwed up the mode is just not playable so yeah I agree.
the decrease in match quality whenever there’s a content drop is super noticeable
the matches are appallingly bad for the first week or so

rank resets aren’t that bad but you should NEVER get reset higher than before. that makes absolutely no sense.
it would even ruin that players own climb by placing them higher.
meaning you can only have better players not worse…

For me as a gold player, every time there’s a reset, it just makes you do placements again. The chances of actually changing rank are quite low. I literally always place in the same rank/division as I was in the previous season, gold 3 in my case XD
I think there’s a opportunity here to get a higher rank than before, if you win all the placements, but players MMR doesn’t actually change, I believe. So you’d still be matched with and against the same players as you would’ve been if there wasn’t a reset.
The resets do very little in the low-mid ranks, I think they’re only implemented to stop people rank camping at high ranks. So for the majority of players the resets impact very little. In my experience at least!
There is no rank reset in the first place. It is cosmetic. It places you exactly where you were before after placements.

I don’t understand the utility of these “soft” resets and I wish they’d go whole hog or otherwise shut up about it.
I for one feel the reset was well timed. I have played pretty hard past 2 seasons and still was struggling in Silver 5/4. I think I played better than I deserved, but still got placed into hard matches where I needed to compensate sometimes not 1 but 2 players (playing support). After recent reset, I’m Gold 2 and feel much more at where I should belong. I can play with full team and support my team fully.
This is why I haven’t touched comp since the reset happened. I usually wait a month or 2 to let people get back to the ranks they’re supposed to be in.
Except me apparently. The game tried to decide I was plat and I was actually facing plats. I had a lot of feeding tanks throwing my games before getting back to diamond. I never want to play with plats again. Never go on a big loss streak before a rank reset guys.
you’re asking for the wrong solution… the problem is the matchmaker not the rank reset… Rivals is currently suffering after breaking 40 million playerbase this week, and high elo is ballooning, bronze and silver mechanicallycapable players are making it into plat+, becasue they did as players demanded and didn’t do a rank reset at half-season, as well as the playerbase now being this massive. get the matchmaker fixed and the ranks will sort themself out.
But the matchmaking is objectively worse after a rank reset. It happens every single time. This time it’s worse than normal and I am not sure why. But it’s always worse after a reset.
