I understand why Blizz might want a profanity filter on their site to just block posts with bad language. I think it’s a little weird for the internet in 2019, but I get it.
I have no idea why they want one this bad. It’s just embarrassing what this filter keys in on.
For instance, I just tried to make a post, and was told I couldn’t use the word “p*do.” Alright, that’s fair. Except I said nothing remotely like that.
I had to read through my post again to realize I’d used the word “torp*doed,” and apparently the profanity filter can’t differentiate between that and it’s target. How simple would it be to whitelist words out of the dictionary that aren’t profanity?
Even worse is the interaction with the word “b*ngo,” because it contains a word for drug paraphernalia inside it. First of all, I don’t know why you’d block that word at all, since it’s fairly innocuous, and other similar drug-related words seem to be fine. But secondly, “b#ngo” is one of the main ways people refer to Orisa’s ult. More times than not, that’s how my teammates call it out.
The profanity filter is just bad. Please make it better.
Reminds of of the time back in Generation V of Pokémon, one new (at the time) Pokémon was called Cofagrigus. It was essentially a spirit trapped in a Sarcophagus.
Anyway, it couldn’t be traded on the GTS (Global Trading System) because Pokémon’s profanity filiter picked up on f*g in the middle of its name.
The original name of the Pokémon got blacklisted. It was eventually fixed, but this reminds me of that incident.
…supercharger?
anyway blizzard prides themselves on being family friendly so it makes sense. I would like if there were an option to toggle the profanity filter though. I am over 18 and can read curse words now.
See, the one most memorable to me was Weedle. The Pokémon had been around since generation I, but let’s censor “weed” now!
I am vehemently anti-censorship, especially when it comes to “bad words”. As long as it’s not targeted toward anyone in a threatening or abusive way, who the hell cares? And more importantly, why should they?
Same here. I feel people use the “think of the children” argument too much. When you think about it, you can’t shield your children from “bad words” forever. I think it’s ok to let them hear these words and help them understand the context and teach them to just not use them until they are older and can comprehend appropriate usage.
I can understand the reasons behind the filters, but I honestly feel like they cause more issues than fix in certain contexts and situations.
I’m going to be honest with you that I’ve never heard or seen someone refer to it like that till you did. I hear things like charger and battery more than anything else when her ult is called out.
Yeah, it’s kind of baffling that you can’t use the word for an underwater rocket on the forums of a shooter game…
Also funny how you can’t use the Dutch word for ‘you can’. Not really important on these forums, but it’s a real annoyance when whispering to someone in Dutch through Blizzard chat…
I agree. I also find the profanity filter a bit silly.
My account was temporality banned a few days ago because I used the words “[Edited by Blizzard]” and “[Edited by Blizzard]”, I believe. I insulted a fictional character, and “[Edited by Blizzard]” was just used to put emphasis on an idea. To be fair, I probably came across as overly caustic and aggressive, but I didn’t offend any forum members personally. Maybe Blizz wants a more sensitive environment, I dunno.
Anyway, I don’t believe in restricting words, any words. There is no word that is so bad, so powerful that by immediately reading it a child or teen will change their entire worldview and become evil by nature. These are not magical words or “abracadabra”.
There is no realistic, concrete reason for keeping people from reading certain words, unless they are personal insults.
Just my opinion, of course.

I’d think so too, but seeing as it sounds just like fox or fok, you’d think they’d filter out anything that sounds like it. Bit arbitrary that particular one.
The reason we have the profanity filter is so Blizzard won’t get sued by parents who are letting their child view lots of f-bombs, s-bombs, etc. from a deranged troll post and then using those words like candy at the dinner table/at school.
The profanity filter is bad, and I totally get it, but it’s there because no one likes getting frivolously sued. A similar discussion about the profanity filter for the Elder Scrolls Online (both in-game and on its forums) still pops up every once in a while on the ESO forums.
Me and the profanity filter have a long and complicated history.
I’ve run into this one so many times. There was even a user who’s name had the banned word in it and I wasn’t allowed to quote them because of it. Actual 200 IQ play on their part.
Family friendly game, yes – Where death threats, rapid insults, criticisms, racial slurs, constant harassment regarding gender, sexual orientation, rank, level and/or hero pick are so common place, Blizzard doesn’t have the man-power to actually deal with it, so Auto-Bots! Transform and Ban-hammer out! Enjoy this family friendly environment XD
