Can we just get rid of text chat?

Been playing this game for 5 years. Since text chat went live on console all I have witnessed is racism, sexism, homophobic remarks and general toxic behavior. I know OW is a very toxic community but how about we get rid of that branch of it.

Agree. The game will be much less toxic without it. 90% of the time it is not even useful anyway.

Speaking of consoles, I still remember a lot of people asking for chat on consoles while having no clue how much better they have it without it :joy:

Or you know, you can go into settings and turn it off

You turn them off as previously stated here, in fact I have match chat turned off, since I see no reason why I even need to talk to the other team. Now if only I could disable voice lines…

Yep, you can even do it yourself (I know scary right?)

Bind a key to ā€˜toggle’ text chat on/off. Push the key once, text chat is gone! :upside_down_face:

I want text chat. I made a few friends like that. I need it to communicate with my team. Turn it off in your settings…

Match chat is pretty pointless. While I don’t see a lot of toxic behavior in chat, I see pointless behavior in where people spend more time typing stuff out than playing the game.

Text chat’s only real purpose imo is to go ā€œjoin team chatā€ or something along those lines.

I disagree
I love spamming ggez while the map is loading

That you have no option to permanently turn off team/match chat is absurd. It’s the kind of decision-making conclusion that only people in a bubble come to. Literally other games have done it and it works. If you want to join it, fine, but to not allow a permanent toggle is insanely out of touch.

Oh please… what timeline/alternate dimension do you hail from sir?

I used to turn off all of the text chat channels, apart from general chat. Eventually I developed thicker skin, stopped caring about what people say, and turned back on text chat fully.

If you’re that bothered by people’s comments, then I would just say turn off text chat altogether.

I kind of agree.

Not for the toxicity, because you won’t ever stop that. But because you just don’t need it. It adds little to no value to the game.

Text chat is great on console, I’m really glad we finally have it. I like throwing out a ā€œNo Uā€ when someone says glhf.

Uh… there is one tho?

It’s the only way I communicate since I don’t use voice so pls no.

If you are typing, that is as good as not communicating in terms of actual calls. So turning it off wouldn’t actually change your experience much at all.

If anything it would mean you focus more on the job at hand, rather than what you need to type.

It absolutely would. It would completely remove the social element of the game. A lot of the fun in OW is just joking around and talking before the match starts.

And there are things I like to communicate that are important. Letting my Mercy know she doesn’t have to hard pocket me, communicating at the beginning to figure out our comp, etc.

I think you can turn it off.

And, for PC players: /hidechat

I don’t disagree. But that isn’t communicating. They could easily have pre lobby chat, then text off for the match.

You don’t need to be typing if you playing.
