Let me start by saying I like the new core gameplay changes. It feels like I can contribute more consistently in all roles.
I’m also fine with the new leaver penalties Blizzard has implemented in casual play and am pleased to see that they have reduced leaving in those games.
Now where is the answer for competitive? At least in casual, there is a backfill mechanic and nothing on the line if you lose, an yet that’s where the new and harsher penalties show up. Meanwhile, in competitive in the new season, where we are trying to evaluate the changes and make our best showing, I’ve seen more leaving than ever. My first 3 competitive matches all had multiple leavers, twice on the opposing team. And yes, I get just as angry when someone leaves the opposing team as my own; it’s no fun to win that way. I’ve read many other posts on this subject in the past but felt it’s time to bring it up again.
Blizzard, if you want to solve the problem, I believe you already have the solution. Implement a harsher version of what you’re currently doing in casual. Give a small grace over a rolling period of games to account for network and server drops or legitimate reasons, but if a player leaves too many comp matches in the given period, a minimum 14 day ban from all play and a maximum ban for the season (perhaps, within 3 weeks of season end, it rolls into the next season.)
Either the leavers will quit or will be banned so they won’t disrupt any more games. Come on Blizzard. With all your talk of listening to the community and desire to fix competitive play, it’s time to get serious about competitive leavers.
Yea I think (it should be) like 2-3 leaves in a season and you’re banned for the season. I don’t know what it is currently. But people can make infinite accounts so…

Its been like this since the start of the game… They didnt do anything then doubtful they will do anything now.
Ive always said that if you have a leaver the game should stop. Other team gets a win, person who left gets a loss and everyone else doesnt lose or gain SR.
People then try and say this can be abused. How? If youre in a team all party loses SR. People are abusive and make them quit. Let the auto banner do its job. Its good at banning people for saying 1 bad thing.

Its called allowing backfill in comp.
And yes, there are ways to mitigate the effect of a backfiller.
for example, if its a loss, they dont lose as much ranking percentage due to being a “backfiller” but still get the full points for a win.

Does it deduct SR for leaving as well? Dumb question, I know, but it’s been so long for me
Thanks for the replies. My understanding is there’s an unspecified additional SR hit for leaving and a 15 min ban from queuing competitive. Its clear that this isn’t enought to matter to leavers.
Honestly, my solutions is progressive bans until comp leavers either uninstall the game or are never able to queue comp again but the new Blizzard will never give up that revenue stream.
I do like the leaver penalty structure applies to unranked recently and am shocked theres been NO discussion of extending these to comp. C’mon Blizzard. Are you really that afraid of your competitive community that you wont even DUSCUSS harsher penalties or adding backfill to comp?
I know Blizzard monitors these communities and I would love to hear an answer to why nothing is being done or even hinted at with respect to leaving comp matches.
Even if its only a significant problem in the metal ranks, you shouls realize that you run the risk of alienating all the new players you have worked so hard to court.
