Can someone tell me the point of Smurfs?

I honestly couldn’t find any valid reason as to why someone would waste their time and money on making a new account. It’s not fun because people have the same thoughts as you and is also a smurf account. Most of the time you’re going against a smurf. You’re shelling out $50 to buy a new game. For PS4, you have to pay for a membership. Do you want to be challenged by high ranked players? What’s the fun in killing newbies, that’s basic and guaranteed when you’re an experienced player, nothing to brag about. I thought the point of a game was to level up. What is the point? Better stats, maybe? But who looks at that. We all know what’s too good to be true. Can someone explain?

Because playing overwatch is better than eating :))

Some players like to practice hero’s they wouldn’t normally use at high SR.

I buy my smurfs for 20 dollars tho, its not too expensive

Playing with lower-tier friends, trying new heros without risking sr or worrying about bad team comps in qp, etc. I don’t really see smurfs as a problem if anything the dev team says is true on that topic. If they really are gm players in my plat games, they won’t be in my plat games very long.

Or… they play competitive on their main account but really only play a handful of characters and want to practice other characters which they feel they are poor out but not ruin their ranking.

It’s almost as if this game needs other modes of play that other fps sometimes offer… like training mdoes, campaign modes, and cooperative modes that aren’t ranked

That is really not smurfing. Yes your general gameplay is better but playing characters you don’t know or flat out suck at isn’t really hurting anyone (cept maybe your team which is why you use the low rank account).

I sit around 2500. Do you think anyone would really notice if I had a new account and played genji at 1500 (because i suck at genji)?

The issue is with players throwing games to get their rank far lower than it should be and then playing characters they are far better than at that rank. A 2500 winston main at 1100 would not be cool. Same as a 4200 winston at 2500 wouldn’t be cool.

Its the combination of throwing games to ruin rank AND playing characters you can stomp teams on.

Depends on the person. Some people buy smurf accounts for more wholesome reasons, such as having a competitive account with lower SR so you can group up with friends when your main account would otherwise be too high. Other people just genuinely want an SR reset and want to see where they would place competitively without a trail of inexperience behind them and dragging their rank.

Buuuut I do think most people just get an extra account to have the thrill of beating down new players for awhile, haha. It’s very annoying, and even if it isn’t intentional, it happens indirectly because these smurfs will still end up being more skilled than their opponents. Allowing smurfs really makes for a disingenuous competitive environment, you’re allowing players to not play at their best which brings question to the whole competitive scene.

A lot of this could be avoided if there was some competitive environment more encouraging for friends to group up and play in without restrictions. Weekend tournaments where only six-stacks can queue would help tremendously, especially if there were no SR restrictions and the matchmaker used only the player with the highest SR as the basis for matchmaking. Group up and play with whoever you want, but know that you have to be competing as well as your best player. That would kick a lot of this more “wholesome” smurfing out the door.

Rolling an alt and bypassing MMR is the best way to get placed well.

I have 3 accounts, My main, my grind dummy and my friend account(smurf). I play like 2-4 games at most on my main a day and grind out 90% on my alt because I do not WANT to try hard 90% of the time, My 3rd is purely to play with lower elo

It sounds like you want quick play. Combine it with LFG/discord/friends and you can easily pick up a new hero on the same account without tanking your SR.

Smurfing is just for ego boosting, and absolutely every other answer anyone gives is a very, very thinly veiled cover for it.

Everyone smurfs to roll games and feel special.

I think in general Smurf accounts are okay, after all almost all the big OW Youtuber’s have at least one and no one raises a pitch fork over that. No long as they honestly play their best and try on that new account who cares.

If they are good, even on that new character they are playing they will go up and get out of the lower tier games. Admittedly without win streaks and some pretty horrid match making if you solo que that might take a while to get out of.

The real problem isn’t smurfs, it’s people who intentionally throw games to STAY at the lower ranks. The fact those “throw to bronze” groups are so common in LFG baffles me. That Blizzard is so bad at policing that people seemingly get away with making groups to just throw.

Sure they don’t hurt any one 6 stacking with like minded people, but then that keeps those higher tier players in the lower ranks longer. Though again all the effort to stay at a low rank is baffling. I understand wanting to feel like a god, but it’s like playing with your 3 year old brother just so you can win at Mario Kart.

I’m not sure quickplay offers the same quality of play?

Don’t really do much competitive shrug

I don’t think QP offers the same quality of play either. It can, at times, but it’s a stretch to say that’s the norm. That said, it’s good enough, and provides a means to improve for people who want to pick up a new hero without forking over $40-60.

QP absolutely provides an environment where you can learn how to play a new hero free from the consequences of deranking, and while it might be nice if Blizzard added the modes you mentioned (campaign and co-op), I think it’s quite clear that Overwatch just isn’t that kind of game.

I don’t smurf but I do have alt accounts. It’s reassuring to have them when you hit losing streaks on your main. My main is around 2800 and my alt is around 3050, it makes me feel less bad about falling back to plat because I still have a diamond account

I like having different accounts to play on according to my mood. I have one where I don’t feel like communicating when I play-- I have one for DPS practice as well.

Well I don’t know whats the point in fully smurfing, but have a 2nd account with a lower SR is actually nice if you want to practice a role / hero that your not good at.
for example I barely play main tank / dps on my main account. only off tank / support. but on my 2nd account which has lower SR I mainly play dps and main tank to practice those roles.

Because some people like to take their superior mechanical skills, game knowledge and game sense to lower leagues and bash some noobs. Of course they will tell you it’s for practicing heroes they don’t use that often. It’s total BS.
