full disclosure, i am a tracer main. but it’s not like i one trick her. I’ve been killed as other characters by tracers many times. and every single time, it’s felt like my fault, like the tracer outplayed me.
Now, I can understand that it’s frustrating getting one-clipped. but I don’t see how it’s more frustrating than getting killed by a random junkrat grenade when you’re above half health, or getting killed by a hanzo headshot when you watched the arrow fly to your left, or by a brigitte stunning you and unloading 180 damage on you in less than a second, or sombra hacking you and shooting in your general direction and killing you because she never has to reload.
It’s frustrating to get killed by anyone when you feel helpless, like you didn’t even have a chance to outplay your opponent, but at least when a tracer does it, it feels deserved. To me, at least.
Not to mention that outside of the top 1% of players, tracer is actually just straight up not good. so why does so much of the 99% of the community feel the need to scream for tracer nerfs when, according to any statistic, there are much more powerful heroes to hit with the nerf gun?
The title is serious, though, I’d like to know other people’s thoughts on it. Why does tracer feel so much worse to you guys than, say, hanzo or junkrat?
ETA: guys, i’m not asking for reasons why you think she’s OP. I can read that in any one of the dozens of “nerf tracer” threads on this very forum. She’s not OP. You cannot convince me that she’s OP unless you are in Grandmaster, in which case I agree that finding some way to lower her skill ceiling would not be unwarranted. WHAT I AM ASKING FOR is why is Tracer worse than other heroes on the roster that are much more frustrating to play against? i.e. Junkrat, Hanzo, Mei, Brigitte, Sombra, etc.
It’s Tracer’s combination of high damage and high mobility. If she only had high damage then she’d be easier to avoid or kill, and if she only had high mobility then she’d be like an annoying mosquito but not overly deadly.
she has high damage, high mobility, and even with her low health high sustainability. for someone with her mobility she can one clip (kill you in less than a second) from too far away, then she can reload and do it again, you catch her out of position and nearly kill her? too bad she has recall and just got back all that health after you probably tried to use 1-2 abilities on her, and she now has an easier job 1v1ing you.
so what i’m seeing here is that because she’s useful, you dislike her?
i don’t mean to come off as condescending but…
So since she has both, she’s unfair, but if she had only one or the other, she’d be useless?
Plus, these don’t even seem like the traits of an overpowered hero. There are asterisks next to every single point y’all made.
she has high mobility, but zero of it is vertical, meaning she can be outmaneuvered by almost any other mobile hero (junkrat, genji, mercy, hell, even hanzo can reach high ground more easily than her).
she has high damage, but only from 10m and in, meaning she has to get well within every other hero’s effective range to do any respectable damage. plus, armor renders her borderline useless.
she has high survivability… except against any sort of burst damage whatsoever.
thus, i still can’t understand everyone’s hatred of a character whose average winrate is lower than mei’s.
High damage, High mobility, Low risk (You never need to commit to a fight), Basically whenever a Tracer dies it feels like it’s because they messed up rather than because you were good.
She also hasn’t really had any reliable counter before Brigitte and even at that it’s not like she can’t keep her distance.
well i mean she has high damage high mobility because thats her kit… if she had lower damage she would just be an underwhelming blinker she has to do high bursts of damage because shes moving fast shes a flanker…
Dude, people just like to complain about things they are too unskilled to overcome or outplay, literally if something is useful, its overpowered in this community.
how is playing a character with the lowest health in the game “low risk”? the entirety of her playstyle can be summed up as “high risk high reward”, right?
maybe it’s just me, but i think the idea of “oh, this character is doing well. let me simply switch characters and that will be the end of that” is not good or fun game design. certain heroes should have advantages over certain other heroes, but making one character useless because of the mere presence of another character seems really lame to me.
To me it boils down to pros and cons. In this and any multi class game, every hero/class/whatever has certain advantages and corresponding disadvantages. In my eyes Tracer has only pros and limited if any cons.
She is super mobile, has high damage, tiny hit box, etc. I think the devs tried to balance all that by giving her only 150 health, but that is largely negated by having recall.
Due to her high mobility she has control over how, when, and where she engages. Allowing her to take safe attacks and escape before the enemy can realize where she is, what she has done, and attempt to punish her for it.
This results in that while her low HP does make her a “high risk” character she is generally played in a low risk manner unless the situation calls for a truly high risk high reward move.
And so you know this game was built on the concept that people swap heroes to counter problem heroes, and swap to counter those heroes countering them.
A lack of counters, and options, is what leads to a character becoming dominant. Especially when their design gives them all the tools they need to blunt or invalidate attempts at countering them. Which is what Tracer has been doing for the longest time.
she’s far from the only character with high mobility though.
and you misunderstood me. i don’t dislike counters, when a character has a distinct advantage over another. I dislike hard counters, where the simple fact that one character’s presence means that another character is useless.
A lot of characters have damage made specifically to accomodate Tracer so they can’t 1 shot her, she’s never in any real threat as long as you manage your CDs because you can always recall or run if you need to. She never has to commit to any of her engagements because she always has the tools to flee.
Outside of a damage boost Mei, Hanzo and Widow are the only characters I know can one shot her.
people mainly say shes op because of high skilled player. tracer isnt what most ppl think she is. shes realy wierd hero and if you try to just brawl all out you will die. she is basically a solo killing machine and works best when she comes in from the back as the fight starts or in the middle. this means shes actuaaly harder to get dps value from then a soldier because she has to spend so much time getting into positions regardless of how fast she is.
ppl hink shes broken because of very high skilled players. In overwatch if you get your mechanical skill high enough you can easily get away with bad positioning and such. jjonak is living proof of this he can walk into the middle of a fight and kill 3 dudes before they can kill him all because hes so damn good at aiming. (and thats all with ark dead and unable to pocket.)
tracers with this kind of aim not only have the mobility to escape being trapped but are nailing headshots all day, so at very high levels of play shes amazing possibly near broken (not saying she is)
but if your accuracy isnt good enough (majority of pc users) for more then the occasional 1 clip, shes not nearly as good as many other dps, a tracer who never dies but isnt getting any kills is wasted space.
