Can someone explain to me the whole "nano-machines" thing

Mercy invented them right? So why does it seem like Moira is 1000x better at using them? Why does Ana have access to a weaponized version if Mercy is against violence?

Yes, Mercy invented the tech. Moira seems more powerful because she doesn’t really follow any code of ethics outside of one she sets for herself. Torb invented the type of gun Ana uses against the wishes of Mercy. Ana only got it after the fall of Overwatch.

NO. There are no nanomachines in Overwatch.

Mercy’s work is in the field of nanobiology, there are no machines involved. Nanobiotics just means its biotics on the nanoscale, just like Microbiology is on the Microscale, and Biology is on the normal scale.

To start, it’s nanoBIOLOGY, not nanomachines. Nanobiology is biology at a molecular level - using bacteria to synthesize chemicals, studies of intracellular bodies, and so on. Mercy made advancements in applied nanobiology, meaning she found a way to use nanobiology to actively heal people on the battlefield.

We haven’t actually seen Moira use her healing in the lore, so I doubt she is better at using it than Mercy. Moira uses Mercy’s technology to heal.

Ana’s rifle and grenades also use Mercy’s technology, which was adapted into a weapon by Torbjon against Mercy’s wishes.

I’m pretty sure the Shimada’s dragons are nanomachine based.

Source? The dragons have never been explained.

To me, if something is too complicated then it’s most likely not the answer. Nano-machines (to me) seems too complicated for dragons as it goes through walls and controlled by Shimada. Without over rationalising, I still stick by Spirit Dragons being “spirits” but everyone has an opinion on this part.

It is more likely they are hard light.

So true in science, in general. I was going to reply with this myself. So many examples in the modern day…

As for nanobots/nanomachines… I don’t know if it’s been explained somewhere in lore yet, but I would presume as a first guess any nano-scale medical devices would be biological in nature and not “mechanical”. For example, cells designed to target certain (damaged) areas. This isn’t even sci-fi…

Source? There’s no reason future nanobiology couldn’t commonly involve even robotic-style nanomachines. Our current silicon already uses nano-scale tech. And nanomachines don’t necessarily have to be made out inorganic materials, anyways…

That’s literally what machine means.

NO. (See how it feels? It’s not nice to reply to others in all caps.)

machine - an apparatus using or applying mechanical power and having several parts, each with a definite function and together performing a particular task.

Moreover, you’ve ignored the rest of my post. You just all caps shot down some poor sod’s lore opinion as if with the authority of Lore Archangel Michael (Chu) himself… and you don’t even have a good reason for it.

No offence, Jewvia, but you’ve been here a relatively short time and I’ve already noticed you as a super abrasive poster. It doesn’t matter if you’re correct. On behalf of the rest of the forum… could you please take a chill pill? Thanks.

As of now theres no evidence in canon as to if Moiras version is stronger except for what we have in game its definitly using a different method but thats all we know. I dont know if its nano biology or machines as its not explicitly explained but since Mercy is a doctor and not an engineer Id probably go with nano biology.

Anas gun was created by Torb, but again its unclear whether or not nano technology is implimented because she appears to use the same rounds for friend and foe alike.

Im guessing its one of those things that we can speculate about but its never going to be fully explained and we just have to accept the fact that it works and there is somesort of science behind it.

Also until nanomachines are absolutely ruled out by an actual member of the official overwatch staff feel free to theorize freely.

A machine is a piece of equipment which uses electricity or an engine in order to do a particular kind of work.

a mechanically, electrically, or electronically operated device for performing a task

People like to assume nanomachines because they hear the word science and nano, and put the two things together to come to an incorrect solution. There is nothing to suggest Mercy makes nanomachines, is involved with nanomachines, or administers her nanobiotic tech through the usage of them.

Didn’t feel it was necessary to quote the entire passage, as to flood this forum with quotation. My words above should address the rest of your concerns.

You seem to be upset about me saying “NO”, and describing that as all caps. I often enough hold down the shift key to long when making short sentences, which results in the second letter also being capitalized. It was unintentional, but I apologize for the inconvenience.

Furthermore, I am not shutting things down with any authority. I am shutting things down because I am tired of hearing the same baseless theories that mostly exist because of memes. (Nanomachines, son. I hear this in almost every discussion I have about Mercy.) If you want to argue that nanomachines are part of her hraling tech, the burden of proof lies on the claimer, not the disprover.

I’ve been around in the lore community of Overwatch for over two years. I never had reason to post on the forums before this board opened.

Purely subjective. Mercy’s healing is infinite, Moira’s while more powerful operates on a meter.

In terms of fictional reality, you’d want medical resources that last long and don’t deplete so much.

In the old soldiers comic I think Ana use different rounds. I might be wrong and it could have been because she was reloading, but i feel like it’s the case. It’s just more convenient from a coding perspective to make a shot hits both allies and anemies lol

The whole point of the forum is to theorise, your manner comes across very authoritive whether that is your intent or not.

People can wildly speculate things that havent happened in the game yet or been confirmed, its not up to you to shoot down theories when you are not a member of development.

Nanotechnology hasnt been mentioned yet, you are right about that, but there is absolutely no reason to discredit someone elses theory when it is simply fun and speculative and hasnt been proven to be incorrect.

They’re still right about you being abrasive, and a know-it-all.

Let’s cool it people. It’s a forum with many different perspectives and everything here is pretty much speculation. Everyone has a right to an opinion, we all may disagree with each other but that’s the fun of speculating and think “what if?”.

As for nano-machines, just my opinion but sure, why not. We don’t know what technology Overwatch (world) has and nano tech could be available. If they can turn light into reality then nano doesn’t seem too far fetched.

LeeDento and iamcatbug and Vangel have already gotten at what I am saying, so I’ll try to keep this short. This’ll be the last I post on this as I’m off topic, and you are not breaking TOS.

I am simply asking you to please be kinder and a positive influence (because you are a large influence on the subforum, as anyone can see from your post history). You can simply state your own lore opinions while respecting others’, even if you don’t think they are correct. There is no black and white, there is no “burden of proof” or be shot down, and it’s totally okay for people for people to be non-canon and speculate wildly here. (We have to… the lore releases are few and far between! [Not blaming anyone here, it’s the style of this game.]) This is a small, new subforum, and constantly phrasing responses as rebuttals instead of simply adding to the discussion is not helping it grow. “General” is filled with trolls and negativity… you seem like a reasonable fellow… all I’m asking is to please consider phrasing future posts to keep “Story” a safe, positive space for all to share their voices. Peace.
