Can I Get Better Watching Pro Streams?

im currently banging my head against a wall, i started playing comp and nothing is going right.

voice isnt as toxic as people say, but the teamwork and the goal we aim for to win the match is never easy.
at low ranks many of the easy heros are tank counters, so everything is out to get me and nothing is there to help me.

im smart enough to admit im not as good as i think i am, can i get better watching pros?

I’d say… it depends on what you’re looking for.

If you’re looking for how to improve your hero gameplay, I’d say watch a streamer who plays your hero.

But you also have to keep in mind they play in a VERY different environment than you do. What might be effective in their rank might be useless in yours, and Vice versa.

Overall, the short answer is NO. Watching streamers isn’t going to make you better. It can guide you in the right direction but you are going to have to find what works for you to improve your gameplay.

Yes, highly recommend watching danteh to learn the game because he’s entertaining to watch and can literally play every hero.

I’d also like to say that you probably SHOULDN’T watch tips on “how to get out of silver in three easy steps!” And stuff from pros. Most pros just don’t know what it’s like playing in lower ranks. When people say “you have nobody to blame but you for a loss”, you can tell that that pro has no clue how to help a lower ranked player. Sometimes games are out of your control unless you are A LOT better than everyone else.

Hero specific tutorials (like Niandra or KarQ), on the other hand, are VERY much helpful and can help you improve.

The only person I can recommend off of the top of my head is KarQ’s YouTube channel, and his “1 tip vs every hero” series.

Are you new to the game? You’re level 480 so you should have an understanding of the game and how it works. Or is this your first ever season playing comp?

Danteh’s echo guide was actually really good. Also, I suggest watching jake’s unranked to gm DPS vods.

Edit: Oops, replied to the wrong person.

i suppose it is a little misleading when they do “unranked to gm” streams, as there skill level is far beyond any teams they would see at say high gold sr.
so thay arent really grinding.

its only my second season, i did my placements the week before role queue came in.
i know the game pretty well, however being in an independent solo carrying mindset isnt serving me in comp.

Also, the game will put them with (in your example) high-golds that also resemble their skill level. The system will try to put unranked pros with high golds that display similar potential.

Their games aren’t exactly what we feel at the high gold/low plat range.

You can definitely improve watching pros, but realistically if you want to climb hard you probably need to find a crew and queue up – unless you are a DPS god, you aren’t going to carry every match in a 6v6 scenario.

You’re a tank main? There are several highly educational streams, or at least there were.

Most reliable for my money are TryHard, Ace of Spades, and Flats right now,bin terms of knowledge they give to you specific to the tank role.

At your Level (Silver, if I am correct) I would recommend Stylosa videos. He hammers pretty hard on the basics. Once you get to Gold or higher, Jayne and Freedo videos will start to make more sense to you.

put it on a plaque, thanks bro ill remember this for a long time.

Honestly – congrats to you! Climbing is a nightmare at this point.

This is going to sound like a bit of a take but no, you should not be taking advice on how to play the game from the majority of Pro streamers. They for the most part are too caught up in their own bubble to even understand HOW the game is played outside of their rank. Are they playing the game right? high possibility, but you can’t give GM advice to someone with gold skill and expect them to emulate that in a lobby full of other gold players. The best advice you can get is to learn to play the game to the best of your ability AT YOUR RANK. Commit to learning the heroes you do best with and learn how those heroes work in tandem with other heroes. This is a team game and the better team statistically will always win. You being in silver on tank right now just means you need improvement in taking space and staying alive.

  • learn when and how to engage/disengage.
  • practice combo-ing your abilities with other tanks, OUTSIDE OF ULTS!
  • keep on yourself about making space for your non tank teammates to do things. As a tank YOU ARE THE LINCHPIN! if you don’t make a choice nothing gets done.
  • DO YOUR JOB! with a given role and even a given hero you have a responsibility to the team that YOU need to take care of. Focus on doing that and keep your mind focused on that. Looking at your top tanks:

Rein - Protect your team and push forward

Roadhog - Get picks on squishy targets, preferably supports

Ball - Do not let the enemy get comfortable in a position ever

Winston - Dive a squishy, mainly supports, break up the back line

  • Above all else, die less. Use the map just as much as your barrier if not more so.

As someone who watched streams for fighting games to get tips from them, yeah you can.

The biggest things you need to process is ‘what ability they are using’ and ‘why are they using it at the time’.

Honestly, I find basic positioning and mechanics tutorials to be far more helpful in improving. Even the best need to use the basics.
