Blizzard LGBT Force Feed Ruining Their Lore

The character creation and lore seems to be very important in Blizzard’s eyes. I would like to ask though why only LGBT characters are being highlighted Sexually. I personally find it very disturbing and exploitative to the community. It has become obvious Blizzard is not using these chances for lore but for a political stunt of acceptance. I have no problem with the acceptance part I just wish I didn’t have to consume media with a political move everywhere I go and everything I do. The Sexual past of any of the characters is not information the audience needs and sexuality is not something that chooses a persons personality or makes them more human. Blizzard has 2 times now surprised its audience with non game related comics with a random hint of LGBT Sexuality. Once with Mccree and the robot but I think he was just using western charm and not actually trying to bang the robot woman. I would understand the Sexual preference of the characters being important for an RPG game but for a first person shooter to move the pay load or capture the point is strange and seems more like a political stunt then anything else. There is a strong reason I disliked Black Panther as a movie and that was because it abused the political movement for views in box office instead of just being what every other Marvel movie was, a superhero movie. I would like to point out in whole the black panther movie was bad and had a poor story line, But because of my dislike of the movie I am racist in others eyes. Blizzard shouldn’t use LGBT life choices as a political move when their product is a video game that requires no character information to play. I think it is much more important to have lore more in detail of how the overwatch world came to be instead of who came in who. I hate and love nobody I am 100% bias. I just want to play a video game enjoy it for what it is and move on. Everything is political, everything has an agenda and everyone has to like it or be labeled a horrible person. Lastly I would like to point out, out of 29 characters the chances of 2 people being LGBT is astronomical odds. Maybe the overwatch world has more LGBT people from now and if so why is that. Also why are LGBT people accepted more then they are now when there is a huge Civil issue going on in the world of overwatch you created a game surrounded around hate of other races but wouldn’t there also be hate for LGBT and other groups of minority. The society of the game makes no sense at all by this point because they have made it too much like our current society and not enough of its own. Like I said before I do not hate anyone or love anyone I am bias. I just wish political moves were left out of things people buy and enjoy because there is no escape from it anymore and LGBT isn’t something to make money off or show off to say “Look at us, we are progressive and are with modern times.” It is something that should naturally form in a characters arc. Not something randomly stuffed in for points on your political standing. I know I will upset some people but i truly do not mean anything offensively. I am pointing out the LGBT character development is not natural and is a political stunt not that I don’t want LGBT characters. LGBT Sexuality shouldn’t be used for money.

Funny how I never see all these “it’s not a natural narrative development” when the straight characters’ lovers or spouses get mentioned in passing in lore…

Merely mentioning that Soldier was once in a previous gay relationship is somehow highlighting it sexually? I’m sorry, but I can’t even force myself to continue to read your post. I hope you r/woosh me

Does everytime you see a black person in media do you think it’s political? LIke seriously people need to reconsider themselves. (they faced problems in the past as well).

This game is a modern day G.I. Joe. It is all about unique and colorful characters with diverse ways of life. It would be a little hypocritical to suddenly be offended by the 76 reveal.

I support this reveal, but I also want to be honest and say that the OW story feels like it veered far from the story they were foreshadowing in early lore. For instance, It felt implied that 76 was Phara’s father at one point, and it would’ve been interesting if that were true. I also expected the overall story to be further along by this point. So at least some of my personal frustration with this story is that we seemed to be focused on developing these character attributes from the past (which they never seemed to demonstrate up until the reveal) to where it FEELS like it was applied in a shallow manner.

I get it though, 76 was in love and hes a solider so he’s not going to let that side of him show nor is he going to disrespect the memory of his love in pursuit of someone else. It feels like you could’ve swapped 76 out with literally anyone and it would feel about as telegraphed.

People are just disappointed in the way of the reveal.

If you compare this to how they revealed/teased McCree’s relationship with Ash, this is very underwhelming.

This better be a plotpoint down the line or it actually is just a PR polish.

I read some of the replies and did not feel it was important to add at first but I forgot how triggered some people are by non progressive points of view. I am a 24 year old gay male happily married for 2 years now. I was scared to post this because I don’t have a mega progressive political personality being part of no party here in the US, but I also don’t feel it is fair to highlight LGBT sexuality but not Sexuality surrounding other characters. It felt more like a cash grab stunt like the Tracer comic instead of character building. Sorry for the wall of text I did not know how to vent my feelings without “Edit was here misspelled sounding” Sounding " outlandish is what I was feeling. If you hate me for that, I’m sorry I just wish gayness was not something that needs a highlight to be explained but why a character can not just be gay from the beginning.

Well, Widowmaker and Ana have had their sexuality presented, as well as Torbjorn, and nobody seemed to have a problem with them. So I think it’s alright to share others sexual preferences.

A; The backstories of characters are for the people who enjoy the lore.
Of course it is not needed for the gameplay, but if not for the lore I probably would’ve never touched the game. Do we need to know of the feud between Genji and Hanzo? No. Do we need to know about Torbjörns family? No. Do we need to know, about Widowmakers husband? No, but many people do enjoy knowing about these things.

B; I highly doubt that behind everything is a political statement, and even if, the way Blizzard does it, is good. They way, the Overwatch team introduces us to those characters is, by portraying it as perfectly normal, the best way possible. They don’t make a big big deal out of it.
The only ones, who are making a big deal out of it, are the fans.

C; They are not making money because a character is gay. They make the money, because people enjoy the game and buy their stuff.

D; Last but not least, it is not a stunt nor has it ever been one. The Overwatch team has they stories of their characters and their sexualities mostly figured out already, but they want to introduce them to is the right way, so they wait for a good opportunity to sprinkle that bid of information in to AVOID making it feel like it was pushed into someone or shoved into someones face.

Regardless of that, people will always complain I fear…

It helps keep out the Mongols.

I don’t have a good grammar joke for this one, and it makes me sad.

No if you are referring to the black panther movie that I was explaining as an example. The movie was advertised and sold as a super hero movie. The story plot and general message was black inequality but told with an aggressive undertone of white racism. Hate doesn’t solve hate. Also If I want to watch something in that manner I would happy do it but knowingly.
