Blizzard is one of the only major developers not committed to Google's Stadia

I’m curious if the developers or community managers are able to weigh in.

The PC market has always had a healthy skepticism and there are a lot more people willing to tell you why you can’t do something rather than how you can, but streaming does appear to be a healthy market with younger generations.

There’s clearly Blizzard titles that would excel on the Stadia platform.

Whats Stadia?

netflix for games

Except you pay for the game + the monthly subscription

yeah $10/month will let you stream the games you own in 4k HDR to a Chrome browser, phone, TV, tablet and use a controller or keyboard/mouse. Starting next year, 1080p streaming will be free as long as you own the game.

you get ~1 game free per month if you pay for 4k HDR streaming along with purchase discounts.

oh what the hell?

I think blizz is holding out on getting a big deal. Maybe they are waiting to see how it fares before signing over their content.

Maybe because it’s not a proven technology for FPS gaming and has inherent latency issues.

Is it playable? Sure.

It it playable enough for competitive? No. Not even close.

So it’s like cloud gaming? I tried those things, the lag was terrible. How does it work here?

I don’t think I’d be a good idea to play a competitive game via online streaming.

No matter how fast your connection is, there will always be a slight delay compared to playing it off your own computer or console.

I like your point but are PS4 and Xone Overwatch playable enough for competitive? It’s not about being competitive as it is satisfying a market and gaining revenue streams.

I would completely disagree.

Firslty people who are playing most blizzard type games on a pc. Have a good enough pc to be running games. Why now downgrade? Apart from more space maybe?

But playing offline and the ability to customise and the collection of endless steam games and such. There’s really no benefit. And with Blizzard already having their very commited audience. I highly doubt their fans and most pc players are going to be jumping over to google.

Then there’s console players, who like myself oickwa console due to the games on it. Google aren’t exactly showing ne any exclusives like PlayStation are and still are pushing that. And Xbox have been buying up companies ready to hit very hard to xbox exclusive for the next console.

And if you’re a little sort of money. Chances are you aren’t going to have the best internet to stream games. I know thats ny biggest concern.

The only market Google have are laptop and mac players.

Pc players are angery that some games are moving over to the epic store. Which is basically just clicking on a different tab. It’s not easy at all to convert people to change platforms.

Have you heard about this thing called the Overwatch League or Overwatch Competitive matches for PC? Blizzard is in no way going to dilute their brand for a pittance of revenue that may or may not come out in a reasonable time frame.

Especially after the absolute disaster that was the Diablo Immortal announcement.

google are evil. duckduckgo ftw.

It’s not about giving up your PC. It’s about giving you other ways to play, which Blizzard has done excellent builds of with Diablo and most recent, Overwatch on Switch. The lack of exclusives is a strong argument. Developers aren’t going to have titles to scale that take advantage of a data center’s back-end for some time.

I travel a lot, so for me to be able to play from a decent wifi connection on a Chrome browser is compelling. Also, not having to troubleshoot a PC and the time that takes away from other things is a value add.

I don’t see it as changing platforms as much as, again, giving people other ways to play.

Yeah, but more WoW than OW If I have to put my 2 cents.
The concept behind Stadia is truly amazing for MMORPGs, in fact Bethesda immediately understood this with Elder Scrolls Online being available since day 1.
You can reach a lot more people, which for MMORPGs is always good, and at the same time they don’t really require crazy input precision like FPS PvP games (FPS PvE will be fine, in fact Borderlands 3 is another day1 Stadia release). You also don’t have to tone down graphics in order to reach people with older hardware.
Maybe there will be an OW Stadia version, but it don’t see them caring about it even a little, as current console versions. If there’s gonna be a Blizzard game ported to Stadia as a big Deal, it’s probably gonna be WoW.

Nintendo Switch, announced just the other day, is a perfect example of opening up revenue streams. Making Overwatch playable on multiple platforms doesn’t dilute the brand. You’re injecting OWL into a market segment where it doesn’t belong. PC is PC, controller platforms are controller platforms. They’re mutually exclusive in a lot of ways, most notably…no cross play.

Stadia is a terrible concept and straight up toxic and we should all sabotage it

can i bum it off a freind like with PS plus and/or X box live?

Console is definitely playable for competitive. Professional Overwatch may have standardized on PC, but consoles have gotten their own community OW tournaments in the past. Consoles have also proven effective with their own pro scenes and online multiplayer in other games.
Compare to a streaming service where previous attempts have proven laggy and unsuccessful, and no real reason to believe this one will be different.
