In the middle of a competitive match, I lost connection to Blizzard servers. I began to lag out, then I got kicked to the main menu. I closed Overwatch, and reopened it. When I reopened the game, I did not have the option to rejoin the match, as you usually would, but instead I received a two hour suspension from competitive play. The funny thing is that this isn’t the first time this has happened. I was still connected to the internet, Spotify was still playing, but Overwatch decided to glitch out. Please fix your servers, or just don’t give out bans for leaving early. Come up with another penalty. I’m tired of this happening repeatedly.
If the option isn’t there, and the match is still running, then it means you were gone for too long to rejoin.
If you’re repeatedly disconnecting, then it’s best to stop queuing for Competitive, and investigate what’s causing the disconnections. When the game server you’re playing on goes down, everyone would disconnect from the match and generally the penalty is lessened.
To be fair here, this is an issue that’s been repeating on this forum quite a bit and the behavior seems to be off-and-on. As one user stated in this thread of the same issue, it appears to be some kind of awful NetCode on the server side.
I’ve been trying to resolve the issue with a friend of mine having this same exact issue and his internet isn’t the problem. I’ve asked him to do trace routes to the servers and they appear to not be dropping his connection along the way. (No evidence of high packet loss nor ping spikes.) This issue doesn’t happen when it comes to Quick Play nor Deathmatch modes. However, the moment he tries to get into a competitive mode match, it instantly drops him, suspends his account, and penalizes him for “leaving the match” with no option to rejoin. His responses from Blizzard Support have been the typical automated response and haven’t bothered to take a look at his issue specifically.
This is an issue specifically with either Overwatch’s servers and/or client and it’s evident with a simple Google Search of how often this problem occurs over the past few years.
Edit:
Just to show that this isn’t even intentional, here’s when my friend got disconnected.

That link is dead.
As for what you mentioned, no one posts in Tech Support unless they are experiencing an issue. So while it seems like there are the same problems happening all the time, the truth is that millions of people are online playing without issues. Sometimes there are 2-4 ISPs between your own connection and the server, which is means there are so many factors beyond your own or Blizzard’s control when you connect to their games. They’ve also been relatively upfront about server issues by posting about them on their BlizzardCS Twitter.
About the traceroutes: Most players accidentally run these to the login server, which is not the server you’re playing on and will use a different route. I’d be happy to look over their networking tests directly on the forum, if they create a post here. They can also open new tickets explaining their lack of satisfaction with previous responses.
