Big discrepancy between role queue and open queue rank

I am gold in open queue, silver and gold on role queue. I just went on an open queue competitive match against 2 players who were bronze and silver in open queue but diamond and master in role queue. HOW is this possible? The skill level is clearly different, a player’s skill isn’t gonna drop that much just from choosing open queue. This is affecting the already unbalanced matchmaking, creating even more unfair fights, ruining everyone’s rank and fun.
Screenshots of the 2 smurf(?) players can be found here:

Should a player’s open queue rank be influenced by their rank in role queue?

Maybe I’m not 100% sure what you’re trying to ask?

They are totally different ranks.

Just like capture the flag is a different thing, just like death match is a different thing…

Role que and open que are not the same so you have a totally different rank for them.

You can be a GM in one, but be silver in another.

It would be silly to even try to compare any of them to eachother, the meta’s are COMPLETELY different. I don’t play open que at all but from what I understand the meta is something like 3 or 4 tanks paired with 2 supports right? If you took me who is peak diamond 1 (role que) and threw me in open que I imagine I’d be like bronze or silver in rank cuz I’ve never played it.

It would be totally unfair to force me to play in high diamond level games even though I have zero experience in open que.

If anyone has more than 2 full ranks (or 10 divisions) of skill difference between roles or open queue they are either throwing on the lower ranks or boosted on the higher ones.

It’s not really that different and most of the skills like game sense transfer over. The only exception might be one tricks who try to learn another hero/role in comp but even they will soon adapt.

I’m masters 3 on open queue and gold 1 on role queue. I play support. I find open queue is much easier as if I need to I can switch to another role to counter. There’s also less tank diff as you’ll often get 2 tanks or can just switch to tank yourself. The match making is generally better in open queue as well as it has a bigger pool of players to choose from when it doesn’t need to match ranks - meaning less lopsided matches. Also, I find myself less tilted so usually play better in open queue, probably due to a combination of the above. Finally, I’ve played Overwatch since 2016 so for me, open queue is how the game is supposed to be played.

The skill of a diamond player is way different from a silver player. I never played in diamond but the best players I’ve found in gold and plat they communicated, they called out when they were going to use ult or other skills, when they were in cooldown, if they were being flanked, if an enemy is escaping at 1hp, etc. They strategize, they know their position, they have game sense to know when to push and when to fall back. They know how to counter heroes and situations. You cant compare that to a silver player who doesnt communicate, goes alone to 1v5 the enemy team, doesnt group up, doesnt even contest the objective, its not paying enough attention to the rest of the team, the teammate next to them needing heals and the Ana is completely unaware, with tunnel vision to god knows what, etc etc, I could go on.
Role queue and open queue are not that different for a diamond player to suddenly not know how to play the game and derank to silver. That seems really farfetched to me. In my point of view this only helps create more unbalanced ad unfair matches. And we know how OW2 has struggled with balancing their weird matchmaking system.

In role queue you’ll often get players from 2-3 ranks apart together in the same game. I think when you could have a gold level team one match and a diamond level team the next makes a big difference on your ability to climb, especially for non carry heroes or roles. In open queue your team mates are generally a lot closer together in rank, resulting in more consistent games.

If they never play it, they aren’t going to give the match maker enough info to match them to other players properly. There’s every chance they’re just kind of terrible at open queue with the comps there. I imagine with more games they’d hit like gold bare min.

I’d probably be silver or so in open queue despite being a masters tank and plat dps/support. It’s just a different game. I would probably bully my way into gold pretty quick though as I adjust.

Honestly not sure if there’s much they can do to solve this without risking other problems.
