Honestly one of the main reasons that gets people to grind SR in this game is thinking that they are going to get better teammates as they rank up.
This couldn’t be more wrong.
The more you rank up, the worse your teammates and the bigger their egos become. People are suddenly a lot more toxic and will use anything they can to make you feel bad about yourself.
Just watch this:

It is not that they get proportionally worse so much as they never genuinely improve relative to the level of play.
this game builds alot of frustration and in the end it makes people hate each other =_=
It is so weird that I do not hate anyone unless they open their bile ridden mouths to whine about teammates. I must have a special ability.
The better you’re expected to perform, the worse you can underperform.
All team games, even in real life sports like pick up games of bastketball at the local gym, run hot and cold as far as good vs bad teams.
So bad is bad, it doesn’t mater the SR being it just feels lame. Yet when it’s good, the higher SR games and player are way, way better.
That’s the real draw of ranking up. Like if I’m Lucio and in games with fellow 3k+ player on say Hog or Reaper both of us know the sort of tempo of speed up, speed back, heal here… pause, go go go.
A 2k player? I can hit speed and the Reaper will just wiggle back and forth in a door way. Moria comes over, so it’s 1vs2 still the Reaper just panic Wraiths away…
oh, ok then.
This is why bronze is and always will be the best rank. Yes players get toxic toward each other. But in the end you really don’t lose anything.
Ah my dude, toxicity and flaming are completely sr netural.
This.
In Bronze/Silver I genuinely had better teammates. We all acknowledged we weren’t great at the game, and we were all there to improve. People were so supportive of one another and gave a 10/10 effort more often than not. I was in Silver for like 1 week tops lol, it didn’t take me long to get out of there at all.
Since I’ve been actually playing comp more religiously (RIP my broken PC now though waaa…) and, for the past two seasons, have spent my time hanging around 2950 + - 3130 +, I genuinely hate a lot of my teammates lol. I queued with a guy (I tell this story a lot on these forums ) who, after throwing a comp game by picking Genji in this meta for a “chill practice sesh”, claimed that “actually trying in Diamond makes me want to kms!” because his ego is so massive that now, since his ex-GM butt can’t even get into Masters now by actually playing his main, has decided that he can’t damage his pwecious little ego anymore so he’s going to private his profile and use comp as simply a means to practice his worst heroes so losing SR doesn’t matter to him anymore…Someone doesn’t know the meaning of selfish, but I digress. You didn’t get that nonsense in Bronze is my point. I was in the low elos from Season 4 to about Season 6 or 7, maybe 8. I never saw people do stupid scheisse like that ever because not only was smurfing not an epidemic back then, but simply put, people in Bronze to Gold don’t have the egos of someone playing in the top percentiles.
You also get a lot of one-tricks who play super niche heroes, from my experience. I mean, I don’t have an issue with one-tricks generally; we can’t all be a jack-of-all-trades. BUT…if you’re going to one-trick, at least don’t one-trick someone stupid like Torbjorn.
Hehe, competitive PvP games truly bring the worst in people into the light… like some kind of an amplifier.
Gold and above is where people think they can do no wrong and their teammates only suck, in general.
My normal sr is in plat mostly but been in silver in FFA comp. Played Mercy only in s2 for fun and people were really nice there.
They really do.
I’ve spoken to a lot of people I’ve played Overwatch with in the past including the Genji guy outside of the game, and he seemed really nice…I lost all respect for him when he started throwing games and mouthing off at teammates who called him out on it (quite literally, the first time I ever heard his voice was when he jumped onto the mic to call the shotcalled a “fuggin R-bomb”. Like…bye lol you’re in your 20s and act like an edgy 14 year old who can’t take criticism and lacks any and all self-awareness.
I seem to get better teams as my SR goes up. People know what they are doing and how to coordinate. They know synergies and map specific heroes. Just all around better teammates
There will always be selfish players and people who repeat whatever they hear on the latest youroverwatch video and rage and whatnot. But I do think it becomes less common the more you rank up. No amount of clips of streamers or their teams raging at eachother will change my mind becuase in my experience the games become gradually more tolerable.
I’ve got accounts from bronze to diamond and of various levels…and it’s all the same. Teams play just as well (or badly together), have just as many leavers, and just as much toxic players. I literally can no long tell a difference anymore. I think its just because the game has been around for such a long time now.
It is really weird though, now that I think of it. I fondly recall how with my friends we were enjoying battlegrounds in WoW when they were just released… that was what, about ten or so years ago?
We had a guild pre-made, Arasi Basin was our favorite BG. Most of encounters were fun and easy, but now and then we encountered similar pre-mades from our own and other realms of our ballet group.
Man, those were fierce battles, incredibly tense. After a short while we all knew by heart the names of the guilds, realms from which they come, names of players on their main BG pre-made raids rosters, their classes, their builds. It was, like “That’s XXX, he’s always checking Stables first, if you are alone there, he controls you and tries to cap it, watch out!”, “YYY and ZZZ always work in pair, they stealth around, mostly Mine-Blacksmith-Mill, one distracts, the other caps and then more arrive to hold the point”.
And even though those fights were really tuff, even though we shouted and sometimes sweared at each other in voice chat in the heat of matches, there was never any kind of animosity towards the adversaries, but only respect of a worthy, strong opponent.
It is so much different in OW. O tempora, O, mores! x)
P.S. Hm, I wonder, trash talk was not an issue, because the two factions could not understand each other in general chat? xD
In my experience, gold and below is awful and full of leavers and trolls. Platinum is pretty pleasant and people are actually trying and communicative but just lacking a lot of game sense. Diamond is terrible because that’s where people start thinking they’re really good. Almost nobody uses mics in diamond and they usually think everyone else is the problem. It actually gets better in mid-masters. In high masters, I’ve often had teams full of people talking and had mostly good experience. GM is always hit and miss. Seems like Top 500 players are the least likely to use mics and quick to blame others since clearly Top 500s don’t make mistakes. More often than not, though, GM is pretty solid.
It does get better, but you have to get out of diamond, which most people never do.
Well, I can verifiably say without a word of a lie, you do get better teammates as you rank up, but the one aspect people are hoping for, that people don’t frag hunt and instead try be helpful and work as a team? No that’s a dreamland.
Your teammates do get better and there is MORE cohesion, but the DPS who can control the heroes who are out of the realm of control for tanks/healers, are still fraghunting and leaving tracer on their reinhardt or leaving reaper to walk right up through your tanklines. That aspect NEVER improves.
I was wrong about it all being the same…DPS que times are the fastest in bronze.
My motivation isnt to get better teamates its to pick a hero and master that hero.
