Best Counter For Mauga?

Not sure I’d call any tank a counter, but people claim to have decent results with JQ, Sigma and D.Va. I haven’t been playing much tank lately so not sure myself.

A Ana Nading the Mauga in the mirror is often a certain death sentence 1:1 for the naded Mauga mirror.
If it’s not a Mauga mirror. Generally you have to use more than 1:1 to counter him. Unless you’re doing something like whittling him away from Range with a character who can win the attrition war.
Like if you have a 1v1 with nobody else on a big, wide, empty map like a push map. A soldier could kite, whittle. Chunk off 150-250 hp shooting his head. And e to heal up with a thin hitbox.
But if mauga ever stomps him. The soldier is dead. And in a 5v5, you’ll often BE 5v5.
Alternatively. Working as a team to starve him can be devastating. You can’t really ever 1v1 him but the top gms have been using Sigma/Zarya/JQ at top ranks.
You don’t go for the 1v1 but starve him of resources. Mei can isolate him and cut him off from his own team as well as counterult.
Sojourn can farm 100% energy off Mauga and use it to kill his supports or headshot the Mauga.
Sigma/Zarya can attempt to remove themselves from tank / lifesteal feeding and play around/despite him. Nothing is clear if it’s a over 50%+ counter. But it can deny him a little.
Alternatively. If the Mauga’s Team has bad healers or a Mercy Pocket / no heals. He tends to take a lot of damage, lose his armor quickly and die. He can’t ramp to lifesteal without dying.
But that’s a case of bad teamwork playing Mauga on a “Lucio on speed boost 24/7 + Mercy pocketing heal on a 100% hp target” team. And you might as well just swap Hog if you get that team.
I think there are a couple of protest supports who don’t heal mauga in qp but ofc few throw in comp. I think maybe it’s petty, But it’s qp. so shrug.

As tank, probably Orisa. Time shift and E properly and you can survive mauga’s spray for a while. When he ults you, you ult back and he’s forced to take your fully charged ult, while forcing enemies out of that space (which saves any allies stuck in maug’s ult)
Eh. Orisa’s E is pretty good against Mauga. But he has a ability to crit through Fortify right now.
So once Orisa’s E is over. Even with shift, she ends up free food. And even with Orisa ult. Mauga can typically still outheal javelin dmg with E sometimes to the point it almost feels encouraged to get somewhat closer if you know you’ll get a full hp heal from her.
Sigma can definitely starve. JQ im not sure. She tends to be food if she plays close but can harass the supports or walk around and start harassing your own while pelting you with shotgun.
Despite impulse. Pulling A Mauga to you might not be the best close range idea.
And Rein can work against a Bad Team Mauga. Even though Rein has killer dps, and can basically only shieldbot and can’t really win the 1v1 duel. (Up Close, Mauga can still jump over a shielding rein’s heads to sometimes shoot their head through shield).
Rein can still shieldbot for 10+ seconds with 1400 shield against Mauga’s 140 dps. And try to get the team to kill him within those 10 seconds.
If Mauga reloads. Rein can try to charge and if Mauga is under 200 hp, it might be a kill. But if he survives. Any hp Mauga with E against any hp rein is a bad matchup to be in.

Mostly these. I’ll add Orisa to the tank section since she can block a decent number of his bullets, her javelin is a free reload cancel on him, and she can just walk out of his ult
Also they aren’t really counters in any other way but Lifeweaver and Symmetra are the only characters that can get teammates out of his ult

For tank , sigma and somewhat d.va.
Sigma can negate him pretty well and d.va can dm him 3 seconds and have unironically the best counter to his ult.
For support ana and somewhat zen.
For dps bastion, mei and maybe soldier.
Keep in mind that you need more than 1 counter to beat him similar to d.va. If you only have one he will push right through you. Exception to this is sigma. A good one will make the playing field even.

Sigma and D.va for sure, Junker Queen counters him if the player is good at not taking excessive damage as she has little that directly deals with Mauga. JQ is just easier to not get shot and thus Mauga heals less than against the likes of Ramattra or Roadhog.
Rein is a good counter if your team is willing to shoot him, Hammond is a fine pick if you’re not taking excessive damage and have good target priority.
Zarya is good if the enemy team is a low damage comp like Sombra, Mei, Widow, Genji and such
Roadhog is easy cheese on boop maps

Can’t mauga just rush to his supports and explode you then? Of all the tank I think ball has the hardest time against mauga.
He can, but that leaves him wide open to Hammond’s team and is also very obvious for the Hammond player to notice and prepare for. If grapple is off cooldown, then Msuga surrendered his position for free
Kinda depends. Mauga wins every support 1v1 but denying him a source of healing can actually be bigger for a tank to starve him than fighting him. But if Mauga charges into a 1v4 while his supports are distracted/dead.
He can be easily killed /forced retreat before he ramps up if your dps can aim headshots on half speed Mauga.
He does a crap ton of anti tank dmg. But due to Mauga’s fire ramp. He’s not always the best for finishing/kill confirming dps. He often gets slept / mobilitied / detered off for 1v4s against decent aiming crowds.
When you play a non Sigma/Zarya/Shield tank. You end up a walking health pack for Mauga’s Cardiac rather than a Attritioner tank with most any other.
Ball is still gonna be large as crap and can annoy supports. But Ball on any capture point is gonna be unable to do much but be farmed and run away if Mauga starts to cap. On Payload Mauga is gonna be a death turret. And even though Ball can evade fast and semi evade fire.
He’s still a literal tractor sized wrecking ball.
