I think you just need to play the game. Nothing else. Just remember to learn what all the heroes do, the maps, modes and what the hero is a good hero to counter them.
For a beginner I would advice you to pick a role and learn 2 characters. Then do the same for the other 2 roles. You should then have a good understanding of the basics and choose which role you want to specialize in.
Just take it slow and ignore the chats. Always remember: you play the game for fun. Not to be a pro!
Thats all for now ![]()
Play them all till you find what you like, the best defense is understanding yoir enemy aka heroes who might be used against you
If your mental health is important to you, don’t touch the competitive mode and play only arcade. That’s my suggestion.
The biggest advise - don’t play this game. It’s not fun, has broken balance and matchmaking.
I was also gonna say play something else, but Total Mayhem is the best in-game tool to learn how to use abilities in a forgiving sandbox with lots of human players. Mystery Heroes might have you try many heroes but the mode is not balanced at all.
It’s best just to play the game with various heroes, until you find one that fits your playstyle. Having one hero for each role is already a plus point, so simply try out everything. Listen to sound cues and learn the maps, and definitely don’t stand still in the middle of a fight.
Turn off voice/text chat for the time you’re new. Don’t subject yourself to the toxicity.
utilize high ground. go into no-combat custom games and use that to roam around and learn the maps, what paths you and your enemies can take to get different positions and flanks besides just “run it down mid” every engagement like a lot of new players will do.
First and foremost, learn what every hero does. If you don’t know that, you can neither play against them, nor with them. Say you want to play Pharah. Go into the practice range, read her abilities, test them out. Play two games with her. Done, now you have a basic understanding. You know the Pharah on your team will be high up in the air. You know the enemy Pharah can boop you into a hole. Move on to the next hero.
In the beginning I can strongly recommend Mystery Heroes. Yeah, it’s chaotic and totally not balanced, but also it’s entirely random and no one there will blame you for your hero choice or stink up the chat because you’re not playing well. So it’s a lot less pressure on a new player who might otherwise be intimidated, especially by douche veteran players. It will allow you to develop a feeling for the game and get to know the maps.
If you’re in the mood to just pick a random dps and go all if-it’s-red-it’s-effing-dead mode, there’s Deathmatch for you, excellent for developing mechanics.
For stuff like understanding the game, understanding the roles of tank, dps and support, how they’re supposed to be played, for rules and tips on positioning I’d say turn to YouTube tutorials, there’s an abundance of them. It would take walls upon walls of text to get the information in writing here by other users, video is much more convenient.
Spend a lot of time learning maps and heroes in “Vs AI” mode.
Avoid the forums as much as possible, I’m being sincere.
You’ll be MUCH better off on YouTube and reddit.
This place is kind of a frustrated player containment zone + it has kind of a weird alt-right flavor to it. Its not too pleasant.
Why am I here? I’m addicted to pain.
