This was already set in motion when they adressed the 6v6 thing for the first time
It was obvious that this would happen. Most people understood that they got into an dead end with 5v5 and the only direction 5v5 could go was the 24/7 brawlfest, which they hinted at as an issue in the developer post about 6v6.
The conservative balance changes over the last months were also indicative of big changes on the horizon.
I have no idea which direction they will take the game, but it’s good for the game that they acknowledge that the direction they went is in need of change.
I still love 5v5 more than I ever did 6v6, it’s fun that your tank pick isn’t held hostage by your teammate and that they removed most of the stuns from the game.
What’s there to screech about? I’m sure most are hopeful but justifiably skeptical. Like all they said is something groundbreaking will occur to gameplay. Last time they said something that massive is when they said they would redefine a sequel. So skeptical is how I’ll feel about it until we see it.

The MR crowd will likely scream that the change is just happening because of MR success and because of OW is dying
Wanted to put it out before they start the bs train
The first part is true. Said success has impacted Overwatch, prompting a reaction to maintain to improve their position. February is faster than I anticipated. Figured we wouldn’t see a major change until June.
Yeah MR is successful, but that din’t start the change and the conversation of OW2. The start of the conversation predates MR arrival
I expected it would soonish, but my bet was for mid march. The 6v6 experiment was more than successful and that likely accelerated the timeline
I don’t know about that. Last Febuary, with season nine, they said they’d like to have a major shake-up every year. This is probably on schedule and not brought forward due to Rivals.
Definitely agree the generally favorable reaction to 6v6 has accelerated things. But don’t underestimate the hit to MAU that Overwatch has taken. C Suite must be panicking if they are pushing for action this quickly.
Yes, they were planning for major shake ups every year. But if there was no Rivals, I suspect it wouldn’t be a very big one. Probably add role talents, reset comp ranks, and a new comp weapon color.
I think we’re looking at a much bigger shake up to maintain market share. Suspect we’ll be seeing some changes to hero and map release cadence and some changes to battle passes and/or monetization.

I suspect we’re not going to see a big change in terms of hero releases. I doubt they’ve got any more resources that will allow them to pull that off. I think that instead we’ll get something like character variations/talents that allow the devs to shake things up for the existing characters, while requiring a lot less manpower compared to pumping out heroes.
