💔 Bastion ISN’T being forgotten, he’s being ignored

the other bad part about this scenario is you never know when Rein is going to switch gears and go to the other side of the map. Just stay away Rein, you’re drawing attention to Bastion.

If Reinhardt is what’s drawing attention to Bastion and not Bastion then you’re Bastioning wrong

Alfred Hitchcock directed a very good movie.

I disagree, while it’s true that Bastion would draw a lot of attention from doing well, the catch-22 with Bastion is you have to do well without drawing too much of the wrong type of attention.

Trying to set up behind a shield draws too much of the wrong type of attention.

With Bastion you have to be attacking the enemy while they are busy with something else, like an allied Genji harassing them and the attention is on Bastion in a particular position, you need to resposition after every big teamfight as they’ll be coming back to attack where you were.

You better not be there but if you’re following behind rein you’ll be focused right away.

As a T500 Bastion player I totally agree.
Stupid Reinhardt/Orisa who always follow Bastion is what make me angry !

For sure, but good Bastions aren’t simply posting in one spot and being useless while waiting for someone to come into view at the proper distance, either. There are exceptions, but most of the best Bastions I’ve ever seen are constantly repositioning to maintain that surprise factor, getting value out of Sentry mode, and constantly looking around to stay aware of their surroundings.

Have you ever heard of the sneaky Bastion?

Well I guess you have.

Didn’t know you were T500. Guess we have people from all across the ladder here.

And that’s usually incompatible with shields, they just don’t get the constant repositioning.

Orisa’s shield has far more synergy with Torb Turret, as what’s moving too fast for the slow primary fire projectiles of Orisa can’t dodge the turret.

Rein’s slowly and steadily advancing shield has better synergy with the likes of Ashe, Hanzo and other heroes with a slower movement speed but not stationary like Sentry Bastion.

the trail of rag dolls at bastions feet is what is attracting attention to the bastion.

Adn finally after three days i have stable internet again.

I’ve been thinking about the dilemmas trying to fix Bastion and someone said “the problem is that Bastion is the only Glass Cannon in the game” and I realised they’re right that he’s a glass cannon but he’s definitely not the only glass cannon.

I think we can look to Reaper as a prototype for a nice simple and strong buff for Bastion. Reaper is very much like a cannon, in a little over 1 second his shotguns deal 420 damage and how close he must get to his enemies with his short range shotguns is what makes him glass. How did they buff him? His self heal. By a lot. Settling on double the lifesteal it had been.

A while a go I proposed a far more complicated buff of 50% Damage Reduction while using self repair but that may be changing too much, Bastion doesn’t need a rework, he needs a buff. A strong simple buff.

Self Repair

Now heals at 150HP per second (formerly 75hp/sec)
Self repair heal duration now only 2 seconds (formerly 4 seconds)

This solves the problem of how 75hp/sec healing is worthless in a fight as almost every opponent will deal damage at a significantly higher rate than 75DPS, so what do you get by giving up damaging them for up to 4 seconds?

  • Their health inevitably won’t fall any lower as you’ve stopped attacking.
  • Your health inevitably will fall lower as they’re dealing damage at a rate higher than self-repair can counter.

This is very different from a healer healing you 75hp/sec while bastion is able to keep shooting and reloading and so on.

150HP/sec allows Bastion’s health to pull ahead against continual sustained damage rather than trying to heal when brought to low health and just kept at low health.

This rate of healing is very equivalent to Roadhog whose breather lasts a total of 2 seconds and heals 300 damage.

And against high burst damage (like Hanzo storm arrows) then Bastion’s health will remain stable or slightly fall, but as those abilities are bursts it’s a fair trade, Bastion stopped attacking and expended his resource to counter their resource.

I like that, but maybe put the duration at 2.5 seconds. Don’t want to waste a ton of the bar just to top yourself off.

From my testing… it doesn’t matter. It’s impossible to waste resource bar. Resource bar draining is directly tied to healing.

I went into custom games reducing max self-repair duration and “healing dealt” rate. You get the exact same amount of healing out of a full bar whether you tap it out or hold the self-repair button down draining it fully.

What I’ve found (by screen-capture recordings and going frame by frame) is

  1. the animation starts (gun lowers, arm comes up, etc)
  2. then about 18-20 frames (60FPS) later the resource bar appears
  3. Healing begins simultaneous with the resource bar actually draining.

So in custom games where I’ve set Bastion’s “healing dealt” to 200% and “Maximum Self-Repair duration” to 50% and Max health to 500 then Bastion heals the exact same total amount whether I hold down the self-repair button or tap it 4 times firing a shot between each heal “tap”.

The problem with tap healing is not wasting the resource meter but wasting time.

If we can measure the resource meter in the units seconds then a single “tap” will drain the resource meter by 0.5sec every time. The animation before and after that will extend the whole thing to 1.0sec but if you’re holding left click to attack the animation will end as soon as the meter stops draining. Still that’s 0.86sec where you’re unable to attack for only about 37-38HP of healing (hard to measure as there’s rounding errors with fractions of a point of healing and damage).

This gives a far better account, sacrificing 0.86 sec unable to attack or reload, in exchange for 75HP of healing. You could then see the resource meter as essentially 4 “blocks” where you can take block with a single tap of the self heal button for 75HP or hold down to take as much as 300HP.

The only thing I’d change “under the hood” is even out the healing as the resource meter is drained to be a much steadier and slightly more front loaded rate.

At the moment it’s a really odd irregular healing where it’s heals first 1-2HP, then 11HP, then 14 HP then 12HP and so on at irregular frame intervals. That first tick of healing is incredibly important as so many things now BARELY kill bastion like 3 grenades from a Junkrat will deal 309 damage to sentry… so if you are able to kill a Junkrat and just as he shoots a third grenade at you… you can’t dodge it. You need about 10HP of healing ASAP.

So something like as soon as the resource meter begins draining, add 15HP to Bastion’s health then repeat every 6 frames (at 60FPS) as the resource meter drains.

Well I finally tried 8-player FFA as Bastion and I was pleasantly surprised.

I thought I was going to be mobbed by enemies and I’d be screwed as i’d have not support from my allies… then I realised I’ve been dealing with that BS as Bastion in quickplay for ages already, so I was used to it.

At least people are far more distracted and not singularly focused on you.
