They are banning people.
Sometimes it can be difficult to know for sure if someone is or isn’t a smurf, especially since there are people who call smurfs anyone better than them or think all alt accounts are smurfs.

Plus, they would lose money.
So there’s that.

a new account doesn’t = smurf

a smurf is someone who can be any level that has thrown down and purposely remains a rank so they can stomp others players.

I have seen people with gold and platinum borders that have thrown all the way down from GM to mid silver to smurf and if people on their own team called them out on it they would throw their game

It’s not. It’s been stated by both devs/support that it’s not. One of these days these topics are going stop. Quit playing Overwatch. Let it die out. Don’t buy Overwatch 2. Smurfs are highly supported in Overwatch and are the only ones that play it now.

Kinda wish they would do what Ubisoft does with seige where a global pop up of the person’s be and why they were banned shows up in the upper right when it occurs.

That wouldn’t work because tons of people use the same battletag and it could tarnish someones name

Not if you toss the number behind it

Yeah but if you see a fresh account that should probably be around the Gold and Plat skill level wiping the floor with Golds and Plats, that’s usually a pretty good indicator that they’re probably not a new player. Especially if their name has an Overwatch Hero, saying, or meme in it such as ‘Genji’s/Mercy’s Pocket’, ‘Torb’s third leg’, or ‘MybackhurtsOW’.

I’m not saying that newer players can’t be good, for certain a player who is accustom to FPS that can work well with their team can perform well and start around Diamond at the least. But it’s probably rare and they usually have random names where as Smurfs almost always have meme names that give them away.

if blizzard wanted to ban some smurfs all they would need to do is google “unranked to gm” with the hammer ready

same reason why they do not bad hardstucks.

The community can’t even agree on what a smurf is…

some say its anyone better then them who doesnt have a high lvl account, some say its just new players
heck I could play overwatch on pc and be called a smurf despite not playing on pc before

So how are you guys gonna prove it?
“New players who know what theyre doing”
I recently bought a switch account so I could play when I travel. I already know how to play but I HAVE to start a new account.
Should I be banned? Should new players play like garbage until they reach level 100 so you dont rage over players getting the hang of the game?

Hate to break it to you, But they have the game on sale for $15. If that doesn’t make the problem worse I don’t know what will. They are all about $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

this is why we have private profiles in game.

they would have to ban the smurfing cash cow

Because they don’t care about consumer experience, they care about money. And people buying 20 copies of the game to stroke their ego is profitable.

This actually isn’t part of the definition of smurf. Most smurfs do indeed take the form of new accounts to reset their MMR, which is - in most cases - massively reducing it. In fact, this is how the very first smurfs did it. People manipulate the definition of “smurf” all the time to make their 4 other accounts seem less unfair, but you do not need to throw any matches at all to be a smurf.

“alts” and “smurfs” are effectively the same thing. If you’re on an account besides your first account and in competitive, it is knowingly keeping the match maker from putting you in games the match maker would otherwise decide to put you in.

I personally wanted to learn to play Tracer, but clearly I’m not good enough at Tracer to take her into comp without throwing. So what to do? I take Tracer into Quick Play, tell players “I’m new to Tracer and want to learn her. Please don’t expect too much from me”. then I play QP until I start to feel confident in my ability.

This means I don’t crash the MMR and ruin competitive games AND I get to learn a new character.

A bunch of Alts/Smurfs will claim “It’s more fun in X rank” or “I want to learn a new character” or “I want to play with my friends who are too low rank to play with my main” and this is EXACTLY what quick play, custom, and arcade are for.

This the excuse that come from the flat-earthers of Overwatch. Stop separating “smurf” from “alt account”. The effect is 100% exactly the same - they both PURPOSELY remain a LOWER RANK so they can STOMP ON lower elo players.

The only difference we can agree with is the smurf stays on their main account deranking while the alt account pays Blizzard for an in-game version of it. Otherwise, 100% the same and actually in this case alt account is way worse because they can do it over and over without repercussions.

Jeff kaplan has said that smurfing is fine as long as you aren’t ruining the game for other e.g. throwing/feeding
