Reminds me of the Sym game I had on Rialto.

“Are you sure about Sym?”
I say nothing and proceed to get a sextuple flank kill.

“yes I was very sure”

Dw though, they immediately countered with Pharmercy.

Back in 2017 had a game on Torb, kid on mic was absolutely SCREAMING to switch off torb cause he wasn’t “a viable hero”. Anyway we had rein on payload with torb turret and we just cruised through as the turret took care of most of them. I did not switch, we won both rounds. And the kid then typed in chat end of game “report torb for throwing”

Ball is single handedly the easiest scapegoat because the vast majority of players are too smooth brained to know how to play with him.

Most players rely on the frontline crutch

You should have asked if they were sure they wanted to play Pharmacy and proceeded to hit them with morbillion orbs. That’s what I would have done.

1 player in thousands doesn’t make up for the fact that ball has an incredibly polarizing playstyle. He genuinely does not die unless you field hard CC or the ball is very bad. Forcing a team to generally feel like it has to play CC to stop him is not very fun to deal with.

A common annoyance is ball playing a long wolf type of gameplay and allies having to feel like they are stuck most of the game playing a 4v5 without ever seeing their ball provide any direct assistance or even feel like they get to play as a team.

Ball has a bunch of issues beyond a player doing well or not. He’s just a hated character design to play against and to have on your team. Really no being good on a few players will ever make up for the fact that most will never be amazing.

that just makes me cry

my job as hammond is to cause so much trouble that even if there is 4 of you, the rest of the enemy team will be too busy and you will still have the numbers advantage in teamfights

also it allows supports to hang back and heal everyone except the tank for a change

im glad to at least be a part of the legion of hamsters that prove his usefulness

The thing is that its not that difficult to keep ball in check when players are willing to invest into like at least 1 CC hero and dictate their time to rear defense.

It could be brig, a cass, or sombra. Unless ball is actually landing lots of lethal damage if you have a single support or DPS which is denying his plays going in, then you have converted the value of 1 tank with 1 support or DPS.

In which case, the other tank is getting greater value than the ball because that tank is getting full team support just about while ball might be running off from a failed attack trying to get health.

This is how most games go because of how easy it is to thwart a ball with a single support or DPS when people actually pick the right tools. Besides most people would rather play with a doomfist, dva, or winston because these dive tanks don’t run away to a 250hp health back, they return to their team for protection to refill cooldowns, get extra fire support, and heal up. Playing with these tanks feels like playing with a team.

Ball’s insane self mobility due 100% uptime passive means he never has to return to his team ever. That’s what most people hate. The lone wolf playstyle.

I can do this on ball. I know how dumb it sounds but you can body block pretty effectively on ball. You just have to care about your team. I get ball is hard to play mechanically, but it’s also very hard to understand that you’re the only tank. And for some that’s just impossible to get. I love ball because I can go to so many places on the battlefield in a short time. I can front line for a little, I can flank with flankers when they go for the supports. I can peel effectively for the supports on my team. And sometimes I go for a health pack, but normally I’d rather give my supports ult charge instead. The one thing I feel I can’t do is effectively 1v1 tanks.

For myself, I don’t feel that feeling is necessary since no other OW hero gets that level of freedom. No other tnak gets it really. No other support or DPS gets it much. The ability to pretty much run away from every single situation and no one can follow you.

OW is a team game. Numerical advantage is very powerful. A player should feel afraid of playing solo to make them want to group up because of how risky it is to run off alone. I think they achieve that very well on doomfist, dva, and winston because these heroes have cooldown based abilities and very definitive downtimes which means you don’t have to run CC against them.

Not an unlimited 100% movement speed resource that you need to use to keep ball clamped down long enough to ever kill.

realistically brig is the only one in that list to actually be that much of an issue with ball, and maybe sombra depending on the map and team composition on his side

the thing with hammond is you have to counter play a lot, so that means finding value that isnt rolling through and hitting piledriver in the most predictable rollout and fashion possible. he can use the element of surprise and keep up the pressure since someone like brig can boop him away and can heal his dive target, BUT, she will not have repair packs for the rest of her allies and she cant do anything to hammond if he plays at a smart range

his main strengths are

  1. displacing enemies from advantageous positions + boop C9
  2. applying pressure to back and frontline through poke, roll, piledrive, and high mobility
  3. donating shields to dive heroes and to help peel for backline if necessary
  4. relieving pressure from allied supports to pick a heal target
  5. bring out important cooldowns and force them to be used on you instead since you can handle them
  6. surprise attacks by going behind, around, and over obstacles
  7. incredible mobility for dodging and contesting
  8. crit resistance in ball form
  9. make space for your team to claim and make enemy have to back up if they want to play without being at a disadvantage
  10. extremely fast ultimate charge rate

he has a lot of value outside of just being a shieldbot or flank hero

but he has an incredibly high skill ceiling so it really depends on him and his team for how well he can perform

if your whole team is getting solo’d by a hanzo with perfect accuracy, there is not a lot he can do outside of trying to distract him

:hamster::hammer:

But everything I said I do is team orienteered. When flankers attack supports I can assist them. When flankers attack my supports I can peel for them, and they get ult charge from me. And I have some potential to front line to an extent and displace enemies. So how is this not teamwork? Just because you don’t have a shield?
