I’ve experienced stranger behavior since the patch…like Volkswagon knowing its getting a smog check strange. I can literally cycle b/t having the network hud on screen & everything runs pretty close to decent (50-60ms), but when I turn it off and clear up my hud I gradually start seeing my latency spike & then stay in the 2-300’s if not spike occasionally into the 1000’s.
Gone as far as clearing everything with my ISP as well as the tier 2 providing the BGP peering relationship b/t Blizzard (via Level3/Lumen) & my ISP. Whatever is happening isn’t egress from my endpoint back to the Blizzard server, but instead something going on w/ decisions happening at the server & the client being unable to seamlessly represent the decision in game for me.
Rebuilding both the game & OS further did not correct the issue. Guess it is time to take another break from another Activision product until they pick up their code review.
I play on both the Chicago and Los Angeles servers myself. I’ve not seen pings into the 200s or 300s at all. If the server was having some sort of problem, all players would be seeing that behavior.
Not necessarily, timely & reliable low latency data transmission is required for some calculations to be experienced within the range the game designers intend. You are going to have a better chance of seeing more success of this “designers intent” if you are living somewhere in the US midwest (or better LA, Austin, Chicago) that lets say a peer in India or Russia where there will be more potential for programming that relies upon server egress traffic to not be changing its routing path to the client due to changes in metric or preference values.
Type the IP address you want to trace in the “Host” field. To get the correct IP you will actually need to open up the game and go Practice Vs AI or Quick Play and if you are on PC hit Ctrl+Shift+N and it will bring up the ingame network diagnostic graph, or go to Video > Options > Display Network Performance Graph if you are on any platform including Console. In the top left corner is the IP address you want to run WinMTR to.
Note: You will want to leave the colon and last 5 digits at the end off and only use the first four set of digits (for example, 24.105.13.114 in the screenshot without the :26535).
Once you notice the connection issue while playing, play for about 6 more minutes, minimize the game and click on “Stop”.
