Ashe's gun is not semi-automatic

Am I missing sth here? In every clip I’ve seen every shot is followed by her using the lever in her lever-action rifle to presumably load in the next bullet. If it were semi-automatic, the next shot would load automatically after each trigger pull.

I noticed this too, this truly TRIGGERS me.

It is a lever action rifle, not semi auto. People just don’t know much about guns.

Clearly :joy:

I get where you’re coming from, but it’s irrelevant since all semi automatic guns in the game can shoot full auto by just holding down the shoot button.

If you don’t aim down sight it’s semi-auto. Zooming in slows down the fire rate and ups damage

That’s not how semi auto works; this is like a pump shotgun. A semi automatic can fully fire without break down the clip if you keep going on and off the trigger. This has a required step in between so it’s not semi-automatic.

Aaaaah…nnnnnoooo…

Most guns in this game are fully automatic (pulse rifle, orisa’s arm gun, D.va cannons, pulse pistols, sombra’s ghetto blaster, bastion’s guns etc) while some are semi automatic (reaper’s shotguns, roadhogs shotgun*, torbs rivet gun, junkrat’s nade launcher) and both (widow’s rifle fires full auto when not scoped and semi auto when scoped).

McCree’s revolver isn’t full auto or semi auto it’s a double action revolver, basically meaning you can c_0_c k (don’t be a pervert) the hammer back manually, making it ready to fire or pull/ squeeze the trigger all the way back to fire. This kind of weapon may seem like it’s semi auto but it’s not, it relies on the user to run the action aka the mechanical parts of the gun that enables it to fire.

Same goes for Ashe’s LEVER ACTION rifle. She has to run the action, the lever, to make the gun work. After watching some clips of her gameplay her animation indicates that her gun has to be manually operated (but for some reason the animators decided to never have the hammer be cocked which saddens me unless it has an internal hammer and the external hammer is cosmetic).

A semi automatic gun relies on one of the 2 to work: gas or force.
The reason they are called semi auto is because they automate the firing process but they don’t fire like a machine gun.
This can be achieved with a gas system (when you fire you ignite the gun powder which creates a ton of gas pressure, this same gas can be used to run the gun) or force (using the recoil to automate the mechanical system).

And full auto is pretty much semi auto but instead of going bang per trigger pull it goes bangbangbangbang until you release the trigger or you run out of ammo.

A burst rifle or a firearm that fires in bursts is not fully automatic because it can not fire full auto but in bursts (2 rounds, 3 rounds, 4 rounds etc) meaning the gun is mechanically made to fire a specific amount of rounds per trigger pull.
You can cheat this by firing rapidly to achieve something similar to full auto but it’s not as consistent as a gun that fires in full auto.

Yes you can fire a full auto gun as if it was a burst weapon or in semi auto by quickly releasing the trigger but that does not make the full auto gun into a burst/semi auto gun.

It looks like (and I pray that it is) quickscope tier AWP mode.

Getting an essential disengage (WoW hunter style PvP replacement!!!) and a robut companion only sweetens the deal.

Ultimately, it looks like she should play like a much faster Widowmaker: no power-up, presumably higher quickscope damage but probably lower total damage compared to widow’s max power scope? just speculating but it makes sense…

Regardless, it’s the first hero I feel actually really drawn to in this game besides Soldier 76 (and Widow) and I’m absolutely thrilled to play her.

I feel like someone has been carefully listening at Blizzard and the user experience is bleeding through the teaser trailer to the point where I can’t wait to try her on the PTR (and I’ve never bothered with a PTR in my life with Blizz).

Good times!

Git outttt! :frowning:

Well a character with a real semiautomatic rifle would be nice. Players with faster fingers would be better

You are missing the point. If you hold down the mouse button he fires automatically. That is all.

The description on her hero page is not about her gun, its about how her gun works for us. To us, her gun is semi-auto because we can’t hold down shoot for multiple shots. One click, one shot.
Edit: I know its not perfect semi-auto either, but its close enough for the use of the term to differentiate within overwatch gameplay.

Solid post but technically there are selective fire chain guns and autoloading cannons that are electromechanically cycled instead of using gas/recoil/blowback. Bit of a nitpick but weapons of that scale wouldn’t be amiss in the game.

Your definition of “automatic” is wrong or vague-ish.
If you say it like that then this video pops into my head.

I mean ok I get it, you press M1 and he just shoots for you in a specific manner… right?

Look, in the lore Reaper and McCree shoot semi-automatic and double action weapons, respectively. From a practical perspective it is automatic since if you hold down primary fire both will shoot at the mar fire rate until they have to reload.

People are arguing over 2 different things.

Some are talking about how a real life gun works.
Some are talking about how the gun works in game mechanics (Click mouse to shoot)

Either you’re a troll or something special. Redeem yourself with more specific lingo or I won’t even bother.

OP states the description of her weapon is wrong. It is based on a REAL LIFE weapon, that real life weapon is not what the description states.

Sure the way it works in the game comes off as a super slow firing automatic gun but since the weapons are based on real life weapons and some scifi weapons you can’t just call a LEVER ACTION weapon a semi-auto or a crossbow a sniper rifle or D.va’s Fusion Cannons a full auto shotgun or Reapers semi automatic shotguns double action shotguns (because you know, 2 guns means double the action aylmao) or a Tesla Cannon a “police officers wet dream” and so on.

I wanted to keep it simple so people would get the point a bit quicker.

You can for Game play meachincs IMO.

To me level action shooting would mean one shot then a long reload before shooting again more like a sniper weapon.

Semi means click = Shoot right away which seems to be how her gun works in the game.

You don’t use real life to describe game mechanics

That’s not what a lever action is, that’s a bolt action with no magazine. Ashe’s rifle is a lever action because she has to manually re-chamber a round using the lever below the trigger.

The in game description says it’s semi-auto because regardless of the clambering animation you as a player only need to worry about clicking the button.

Agreed, 100%.
