This season has become a turning point for me in Overwatch.
A significant issue arises as many support players adopt a DPS playstyle, while most DPS characters stubbornly refuse to switch. Mauga’s introduction to Overwatch 2 has undeniably tipped the balance, marking him as the most overpowered character to ever grace the game. Reflecting on the past, I find myself yearning for the days when Overwatch was simpler, when the support role prioritized healing and supporting the team instead of infiltrating the enemy’s backlines in a pursuit of kills.
The ongoing trend of character reworks, in my opinion, is unnecessary. I hold a preference for the original versions of many heroes, with exceptions like Noodle Sim. Bastion, Reaper, Sombra, and others didn’t require the alterations they underwent. Looking ahead, the promise of a refreshing next season sparks hope, but the game’s current state necessitates extensive balancing. Tanks feel underpowered, and some tank ultimates prove futile, easily nullified by a jar of powder, a lamp, a petal, a hack, and more, often with minimal timing required.
The frustrating reality surfaces when encountering tank mains who steadfastly adhere to one character, refusing to adapt to counter the opposition. It becomes an unwinnable scenario with little room for improvement. While I acknowledge that not every game can be won, I yearn for a system that transforms matches with an 80% chance of defeat into slightly more winnable encounters. While some suggest avoiding tanks altogether, the likelihood of encountering the same issue in the next game remains high, and avoiding everyone is an impractical strategy.
The argument of “play tank to prevent this” holds some merit, as I do enjoy playing tank, but my inclination to flex for quicker game finds and increased enjoyment adds a layer of complexity. The overall Overwatch experience has evolved drastically from what it used to be, and I yearn for a return to those simpler times. Moreover, the nerfing of characters that genuinely require skill adds to the frustration.
As a flex Plat 2 player, my sentiments reflect a longing for a more balanced and enjoyable Overwatch experience, akin to the game’s earlier iterations.
