Are Zarya’s Grav Tech and Sigma’s Grav Tech Related?

We all know that the strong political leader of Russia and CEO of Volskaya Industries, Katya Volskaya, was meddling with the Omnics and utilizing their technologies for Russia’s own good. Could she have also drawn resources and tech from Talon (specifically Sigma)? Maybe they were the ones who abducted Sigma and placed him in that asylum?

I feel like there has to be some connection between Zarya’s graviton surge and Sigma’s obsession and intellect with singularities and astrophysics.

Thoughts?

Would be kind of funny if it was, because Orisa has an interaction with Zarya where she says she learned to use her Graviton Charge (Halt) by watching Zarya use Graviton Surge.

Who knew Zarya of all people had such a fan club?

Well. The Graviton engines were stolen tech in the first place. Maybe Volskaya stole it from Sigma.

Oh, I didn’t know that! Maybe Sigma was a fan but wanted to enhance and improve the tech himself?

It would be just so cool that if Sigma was caught by Katya Volskaya and then he escaped or something.

I don’t believe Sigma’s power comes from technology. I think it actually comes from himself.

His bio states: “Dr. Siebren de Kuiper’s life changed forever when an experiment gone wrong gave him the ability to control gravity.”

So, I don’t think they’re related directly.

What if Sigma was some chief scientist, a part of some notable laboratory in Europe whom had strong connections with Russia? And then, the experiment that went horribly wrong was, evidently, centered around creating black holes?

The creation of a Black hole was an accident, not the purpose of the experiment, his bio states so:

“But something went wrong, triggering the brief formation of a black hole.”

He was interested in harnessing the power of a black hole but the experiment was about manipulating gravity in general from what I can tell.

Though it is possible he had connections with Volskaya, I doubt it.

Especially since Zarya’s definitely not creating an actual black hole, just something akin to it. It would cause a lot more destruction otherwise.

And if you’re going to call “It’s for gameplay” shenanigans on me, I’ll pull the card of Searching, where Zarya uses Graviton Surge to hold Sombra in place and it causes no visible damage to her or the surrounding area.

Regardless of whether or not it involves a real black hole, Sigma seems to have discovered a working unifying theory. A unifying theory has implications far beyond just black holes. If he had discovered one, which he appears to (and regularly says “the theories are correct!” as a voice line & talks about a unifying one in the short)… it’d make sense for tons of new tech would start appearing including that based around manipulating gravity and the fundamental forces, not just black holes.

The question is how long was he imprisoned for? If it was years, that would be plenty of time to say “yeah they built ontop of sigmas work” confidently.

Zarya’s (Or rather, the unnamed omnic behind Volskaya Industries’ success) Graviton Surge is fundamentally different than all of Sigma’s abilities. Sigma directly controls planetary and local gravity. Graviton tech (Zarya’s and Orisa’s) only affects local gravity. The fact that something as large-scale as a graviton surge has no effect on planetary gravity leads me to believe that they are different operations from the start. Graviton tech is less control of gravity and more control of POLARITY. She rearranges the polarity of quite literally anything to stick to her graviton surge. This allows her to stick her grav anywhere but not to have it simply be floating. It has to stick to something. She then uses the opposite pole to attract to everything else around it, drawing everything closely together. This though, has two major flaws.

  1. It is extremely low-damage
  2. it requires a high degree of power and is very unstable

A black hole is very different. it is:

  1. Utterly destructive
  2. Once created, one of the most stable things in the universe.

So sigma’s kit and Zarya’s grav are nothing alike.

I think we’ll eventually learn that Sombra was behind most of it.

She got access to Sigma’s experiments/data/technology through Talon, then passed it off to the Omnic to give to Katya, giving her a near foolproof way to blackmail her.

Zaryas Grav (and Orisas Halt) are based on the work of someone named Tobelstein. Sigma actually refers to him by name if he eats a Grav (or kills Zarya, I forget which)

Sigmas tech is all his own or Talon made to amplify or utilize his powers, and his powers are a product of his experiment like Tracers.
