The cost of making those cinematics are simply too high and Im sure Microsoft would rather the cinematic team spent their time working on projects that makes them the big money.

Just look how far hearthstone has fallen. Their resources are simply stretch too thin.

Nope. Very expensive.

This is the last story animated short we got.

I still don’t see this as “animated short”. But when I say this I mean that it IS an animated short but it isn’t an animated short. When I say animated short I mean stuff you see and think its from a show or a movie based on the game. Look at Alive, Last Bastion, Zero Hour. Or for other games look at the Welcome to Noxus animated short. Stuff that makes people say “ok now where’s the show for it, this must be the trailer right”, “Why don’t you guys make a movie already”, “all these compiled together can easily be a movie” etc.

In other words, super high quality that look like 3D movies with ingame graphics/looks scaled up to Pixar 3D animation quality. So to me the last true animated short was Sojourn “Calling” August 2023 :grimacing:.

I think we will sadly no longer get this animation. They were also my favourites.
I loved “Dragons” and “Rise and Shine”. They were so well done and fleshed out this characters so much.

With the re-release of OW2 back in the China, theres a slight chance Shorts will return from profits made. Wishful thinking but the return of Lootboxes with free stuff is a good sign of more things to come.

I think the budget for animated shorts would be better spent on a Netflix show or something. Get a lot of eyes on Overwatch again.

There’s no lore team anymore, and based on the kind of little bits of story they add via in-game chats pre match these days, it’d be slice of life foo foo crap episodes, like Lifeweaver and Junkrat go on a shopping trip at the mall and go to the salon together.

Nah it would be something like origin story drawn out. For example Baptiste origin would give that “Arcane” feel.

no, never, nein, jamas, au revoir, overwatch as a franchise is death, there is nothing special or unique anymore, is just another online game in the market, they teased for months the sojourn short that was a prelude to the pve and pve is death, aaron keller promised at least a lot of comics around a year ago and we only got the christmass comic that completely ignored the whole canon and skipped the whole story, a lot of things happened out of camera, juno and orisa joined overwatch on a blog post, is over

the animations is terrible, only 2 minutes long, everything except mauga are jpg moving, the plot is nonexistant, new heroes have nothing to do with the lore and main plot

U know who will never get animated shorts, the skin waifus

The cinematic team was let go awhile back.
Chances are pretty good that they won’t be coming back. Even though players love them, the company seems to have taken the side that the cost to make them is not justified.

Best bet (which also probably won’t ever happen) is the hopes that they partner with a streaming service and make some kind of animated show.

I assumed no. It sure would be nice. The shorts are very well done. They gave Juno a comic, so I think they’re still doing that. I don’t know if they gave the new tank one.

Maybe we get a new one with the SSERAFIM collaboration. For some reason if feels like they put much more effort into it if it is about selling skins.

They gave him one with “Tear it down” but it is very short.
