Are we at the "what now?" phase of the game

After an agonizing 2 years we get 6v6, people are liking it. But now that we have it, now what? When it goes away it’s just gonna drive people away. This is just my opinion but i’m just bored of this game now and 6v6 doesn’t fix it. I really enjoyed 6v6 at first but it feels stale now. And i’ve been noticing the same things lately, we’ll have 4 tanks and throughout the game, 3 of them will have decent stats but that one tank is absolutely murdering everyone, was in a game and a zarya went over 40 elims while other tanks had less than 20. And seeing the same characters every match just gets tiring like come on give me some variety. Forcing yourself to have fun is the worst feeling and for once im glad the penalty is so stupidly harsh, its more of a way to say “play something else this isn’t worth it”

But back to the point, what now? We just keep getting ignored by devs while they spew out garbage to us until we get another play test? I seriously don’t see any good direction this game could go after this. All I see now are just more bad to mid tier skins (with reskins), terrible patch notes, more characters with copy and paste abilities because devs are too scared to add anything new and just, nothing. This game right now is a big fat pile of nothing.

Now we have Rivals, it’s the successor to OW, is what a decent hero shooter is supposed to be. We’ll have soon Deadlock too.
After that we’ll have real games like GTA VI, TES 6, Witcher 4…

OW2 barely survived 2023 (lots of layoffs, lost of performance bonuses for OW), lets see if we’ll have info how it went in 2024, but I can already imagine few layoffs and some OW devs being moved to the new secret Blizzard game.

Even with 6vs6, free rewards, new hero, OW can’t no longer compete in the market, pretty probably they will annouce end of life of OW next year.

They simply cant compete with the Marvel IP and NetEase budget: they are (allegedly) releasing 4 new heroes every new season, which is absolutely insane.

I dont care how unbalanced Rivals is compared to OW as long as keeps fun and chaotic and i can jump in a game in 10 seconds.

Because this 6v6 is just 5+1v5+1, it doesnt have the balance and design direction that made 6v6 fun and interesting. If they had reverted S9 and the 5v5 nerfs to non-hitscan DPS like Mei/Sym while letting tanks have better defenses both selfish and team-wide, then maybe it would be closer to what many wanted out of 6v6.

Its not just the format but the balance that was part of OW1.

I expect that OWC will keep people more interested than the 6v6 test since the devs cant just hand out free buffs to hitscans in there.

They said they would be adding 4 heroes before S1, which isnt unlike what OW1 did early on since heroes like Zarya and Dva were added after the beta. MR is basically on an open beta right now.

I think “bringing back” 6v6 should be part of a principle where OW2 was very immature in forcing everyone to switch to 5v5 without any real alternative choice even in the arcade level. If at the end of the experiments we would find ourselves with 6v6 at least in arcade or unranked… it would still be an ethical choice like not completely canceling the Assault maps.

And now? I would say that people realize a little that OW2… literally does the same thing that OW1 did under a different setting:

  • releases new heroes and maps? Yes;
  • modifies numbers and reworks? Yes;
  • adds quality of life features every now and then? Yes;
  • has it finally reestablished a suitable bugfix rhythm? Yes;
  • proposes experiments? Yes;

apart from suffering from the organizational comparison with other video games, and having scaled down the obsession for its e-sports offerings… it is still a game that has returned to being exactly the live service game of 2016, with the only difference that no game that changes its motenization or access has the presumption of putting a “2” on the title. ask a friend of yours who has never played ow2: “do you know what it is?”.

the answer could be
“is that game that had a story and then they deleted it?” :thinking:

well, the only thing in which ow2 is not a “2” is literally the narrative that not only has not given what it promised… but has regressed to the way of doing narrative as it was done in 2016: only new heroes and maps carry forward a “lore”, but we have nothing, not even archives.

Its ok to move on from the game. You dont have to go looking for reasons to play ow if you are bored

Yeah it’s almost like the devs need to realize pay walled skins and balance patches isn’t real content. And just because you get cool events here and there you rip them out of the game. So we can’t play the really fun ones and we’re stuck with the same boring Christmas ones.

That is perhaps the main reason Mahvel is performing quite a bit better than I initially expected. There is no logical reason to continue playing Overwatch at this point.

honeymoon phase be like :

MR isnt overwatch, its not a fps, its not really a shooter either. it doesnt satisfy the same “needs” as what a fps like ow can give

I swear Ive never been more glad to have received an influx of great single player games. Silent hill 2 remake and wukong have given me more fun and joy than overwatch post season 9

At this point I feel like we need a new subforum for Marvel Rivals doomposting.

There’s no tangible reason for OW2 to exist. They have only taken things away.

Let’s see in 2 weeks when MR release season one, 2-4 new heroes and first balance patch… if they don’t mess it up ow is in trouble, they are already but I mean even worse

Not sure why it’s MR turn to prove themselves. They’ve already done pretty good so far. It’s on Overwatch to prove themselves now. Whatever MR does they’re in a very good position right now.

I’m already beyond “what now”.

Rivals is drawing me in at this point.

I love the overpowered feel.

I agree i’m just saying it might get worse very quickly, me i wouldn’t comeback to ow even if MR dies tomorrow, I just like to speculate

I forgot they announced not only heroes but new maps and gamemodes

We play and enjoy the game? What did we do back in the day when you just bought the game and had the game? You just played it, and sure, maybe you got tired of it and stopped playing it for a while, or forever, but you can always return when you want to.

Its gonna go away!?

See, this mentality is trash. These people want quantity instead of quality. MR is that. Fast queue times but 80% of the games are full of cheaters, throwers, leavers, cry babies, morons, or all of the above.

Rather have slower queue times and quality games (which I have been getting in OW, 50% of my games are down to the wire, which I’m enjoying).

Rather have my highlight intros be accessible to ALL my cosmetics, not just paired to only one.

Rather have 1 fun hero released than 4 copy + pasted heroes who do the same thing in a different color.

what now?

we’re in the “this is what the game is and you need to decide whether or not thats ok with you” phase

the game isnt going to dramatically change in any way

you can either deal with what OW is or you cant

It better change soon. Because can’t see why anyone is gonna remain within 6 months if they do not improve. Even if net ease is greedier (which they will be eventually) Overwatch needs to do something the keep up with a new game with 33 new heroes for players to sink their teeth into. Especially if MR rumors are true and we’re getting heroes in bulk rather than one at a time(doubt that’s how this’ll work). But Overwatch needs to show something f they don’t want to lose jobs at the start of the year.
