Are OTP really *that* bad?

Im just curious on the consensus among OW players

my opinion on it is that being OTP or having “mains” in general are fine, the big difference being that you can still provide meaningful value to your team

as long as your are good enough at that hero by spending so much time with them that you can deal with counter-swap by using counter-play

i think its just another way to play the game honestly, having one or two mains doesnt seem like a bad thing to me. i provide way more value with those heroes than i could with the others

maybe its sort of a debate of “can you play better with swapping or by counter-play?” and how some heroes have “direct / hard” counters that deny most of their value, but im not entirely sure; i still think the majority of heroes have some way to change up their standard playstyles to account for enemy picks

the main complaints i see about OTP are the ones that are bad at playing the hero, which is different… there are people who are much better

Depends on what hero and what role. If that hero’s meta, you won’t even notice it, since they won’t have to switch anyways. If it’s an off-meta hero, things get critical if they’re bad or just not good enough. If it’s also a tank, then it is critical, because there is no second tank anymore.

Being an otp regardless of how skilled you are means you’ll inevitably, one day, be a square trying in vain to fit into the hole in the shape of a triangle. That day by not swapping you’ll throw, soft or hard.

but my question is, isnt that just natural for every player?

id assume that this would happen even you play the whole spawn swapping game, just because of being outplayed

the better team wins overall anyway, and it is not like you will be solo carrying matches all the way to Top 1

i see players like chazm rent free at the top of t500 from only playing ball for example, when the rest of the leaderboard is sigma dva, so is “meta” really “meta?”

You end up at the rank you belong anyway. If you can stay in a certain rank only playing a single tank, I don’t see how that’s any worse than flexing your way to a higher rank and still end up losing the same amount of games.

You are correct. Sometimes counter swapping won’t even make a difference when the enemy team is simply having you squashed in spawn. Some games are simply unwinnable due to various factors and it usually won’t matter if you’re OTP or not

That’s where you’re wrong. Based on extremely advanced scientific studies, conducted by the Forum’s experts, playing Widow will grant you infinite rank climbing by simply looking at the enemy team and making it disappear. Don’t argue with the hard truth please.

I don’t get mad at OTPs. But it would be nice if everybody on my team played to the best of their abilities and try to win the game with everything they’ve got.

And that includes swapping appropriately, because that does affect how likely you are to win or lose as well.

Doesn’t matter if it’s a team-diff and the game is unwinnable regardless. It still feels good to know that my teammates at least tried. But by one tricking, it means that you’re handcapping yourself one way or another.

But again, I don’t get mad at OTPs, it’s not like I have them every game.

…although if I start getting junkrat or sym OTP every game, that might start to drive me nuts lol.

dont worry, you might get the 1000 IQ junks and syms that fly up to challenge the pharah/echo and win

ive played with a few junks that just go up and drop her like a rock with his combo

I believe that one tricks are the most skilled and sexy members of the community. They also have the best mental fortitude that comes from their sheer intelligence. The other girls are just jealous that they are not like us.

The devs have repeatedly stated that playing as an OTP is a perfectly valid way to play this game

as such, not only are they NOT bad, they are fine

Aww thank you! It’s actually nice to hear someone appreciate us level 200 Bastion mains

I honestly enjoy the idea of mains and usually don’t mind one-tricks it’s just a matter of if they’re good or if the hero is as bad as launch Lifeweaver. Contrary to popular belief some heroes aren’t just bad they’re downright unplayable so trying to force them to work is a genuine throw at times

It does not matter. What matters is a matchmaker that makes matches that conform to your skills, and not your win rate.
Blizzard failed miserably. I have not experienced such a crap weekend in ages.

there are no unplayable characters at the moment

all characters “work”…there is no “forcing them to work”

choice of character is NEVER throwing. Ever. If it was, since throwing is against he rules, Blizzard would remove any such character from the selection screens to prevent selection of the alleged “throwing” choice

when Blizzard deems a character unplayable, they remove that character from the selection screen until they have resolved the problem

I don’t recall them removing launch Lifeweaver but i see your point. I’m a strong advocate that every hero can work if you know what you’re doing but with how Team 4 balances we get some heroes that just sit in the trashcan for eons that utterly struggle

while LW is one of my least favorite characters, I dont know of any point in his existence when he was unplayable.

balance is an art, not a science, and yes, some characters will be above the line, and others are below it…but never so far as to be unplayable

Launch Lifeweaver was one of the worst states a Hero has ever been in and one of the only instances where a Hero genuinely felt like an actual downside to your team. He was a mix of clunky controls, bad stats, and overall flawed Hero design that just in Season 12 really got a proper fine-tuning

All in all… One tricking is fine (WITH ANY HERO mind you). It just comes down to flexibility question. Every hero can and is countered by a certain team composition. Either you know how to battle it or you don’t in which case, you’re not effective for yourself or others.

I personally hold belief that you can play this game with 1-3 characters under your belt for any and all situations.

In masters+ maybe. Otherwise, this logic is just a scapegoat for players who are too selfish chasing duels to work with their team.

If I leave my profile open, I’ll get all this OTP hate very quickly as an excuse for dps who refuse to peel and instead just say “u suck pls swap to kiriko or moira”

If I have my profile closed, players start to think about my gameplay more and want to play as a team.

It’s crazy how much more effort my team puts into teamwork when my profile is closed and they just start making more respectful assumptions about my skill level based on how exotic the skins, profile icon and titles are.
