I was doing some research on where archives went since its been almost 3 years since we last had the ability to play them. I was at OWL when Jeff announced retribution and I loved playing all 3 missions every event time. Hell I even bought the new PVE missions and enjoyed them for what they were.
But today I learned that Aaron Keller admitted on stream with Emongg a couple months back that the reason we havent seen them is that during the creation of OW2 PVE they essentially broke the code of the old missions and arent sure if its worth the resources to fix them.
Now I am not a game developer, nor do I think their job is easy. And I can understand that the missions broke when designing new PVE especially since many archives missions had resused/test bed models for characters(such as Orisa/OR14, Widow/Sniper, Mauga/Heavy Assault) but sitting on good content that pretty much everyone enjoyed and saying its not really worth it to fix just grinds my gears. I will always hope for its return but this doesnt help the fact that I think OW2 will go down as the biggest/worse sequel flop of all time. And I think we are at least owed this for everything thats happened with OW2 regarding PVE
making as much money as you can really fast with little effort
vs making money by long term investment and risk since if it fails its a big fail vs the easy way
i kinda dont blame them but i think they could have took the risk. the lore is a BIG part of overwatch and if they risked making more it and maybe even an animated series, movie, preferably pixar they would have brought in a huge crowd. especially kids which is a big market. its a big risk tho, and maybe they thought it wasnt worth it
i think they could have done it but who knows⦠no one has a crystal ball. it could have failed and been a flop. nothing is certain
Im not talking about new missions. Im talking about the old ones. Theres no risk to bringing them back. They already exist, their entire storyline, gameplay and cutscenes are on YouTube. Iām talking about repairing the code and letting us play these 3 missions again. All it takes is the development times since everything is already there
they musta really BROKE ITā¦ive broken things and got fired in my lifetime. cost a company 1000s of dollars. use to work for a electronics company and they coated circuit boards with a material. 3rd shift guy told me DONT PUT the cover on it⦠im gonna work on it. he didnt and i was the scapegoat⦠heh
I dont know a single person that disliked these missions. They got a ton of play time when they were avaliable and you could easily find a 4 stack to play the hardest modes in less time than solo queueing comp. And what new content? we really havent gotten anything thats new. Freja is a really bland character whos abilities consist of 2 straight dashes(we already have 3 characters who do the same thing) a vertical dash, and an alternate fire thats just an explosive version of her primary. Stadium is just the assets that already existed from the cancelled pve contetn
You donāt know many people then. Everybody played them through once and then pretty much never tried them again. OW2 has gotten plenty of new content and features for the game. Sure, itās not overbearingly a lot of stuff, but had they wasted time on some old irrelevant content it wouldnāt even be this much
bringing archives back would just be a waste of their time
id like it back just as much as the next guy but realistically is anyone gonna put enough time into it to justify the work required to bring it back
Clearly. Sometimes people will code something in a way that is a HUGE amount of work to fix, and apparently in the case of archives, it is not worth it to do so.
If you do any sort of research youd see there is a pretty heavy push from fans who want these missions back. It was extremely common and easy to find games. People tried for achievements, people wanted to win on highest difficulties. Some of my favorite OW moments are beating all 3 on Legendary.
And what new content do you speak of??? Weāve lost more content than weāved gained. Looking for group? Gone. Yearly events? Gone. 2CP? Gone. Paris/Horizon map that they said they were gonna fix? Gone. New cinematics? Weve got 1 high quality one in 3 years(Kirko). So gone. Lore development? What happened to Zen/rammatraās backstory? Wheres soundquake? He was name dropped in the original trailer. And we lost a tank.
And in return what did we get? The ping system? A new mode that everyone hates so much its gotten huge changes coming less than a year later.
People forget that OW2 was announced in 2019, and was already in development. Most of what we have now is what was already created during 2019-2022. Soj, JQ, Mauga, Stadium perks and powers were already well into development or finished when OW2 released.
Literally every single thing you listed I couldnāt care less about. New maps, new modes, new characters, map voting/character bans, perks, stadium, ETC ETC ETC I canāt even list all the new stuff, because it would take fourteen hours.
um, what does that have to do with anything? lol. Lots of things are in development all the timeā¦
Yeah we got a small handful of new maps, 2 new modes that are so universally hated that one is already being completely reworked and the other is always avoided when it comes to map votes.
Which brings me to my next point, map votes, character bans? Things that we wanted for 9 years that every other game has that we only got in last couple months.
Stadium and perks are left over content, i dont think you really read anything. I was there when they announced ow2, I was at the booth when they showed the perks and powers and upgrades. I played the Rio mission. All in 2019⦠This isnt new content, this is stuff that was created over 5 years ago that we are finally being drip feeded. You can find the screenshots of them showing off tracer powers. This stuff has been developed for years, its not new content. Its old content we are finally being given.
It has to do with it not being new content⦠you said weāve gotten so much content in ow2. Yet you name things that have been around for years. Its not new content to ow2. Which is why I said we lost more than we gained. Mauga started work in early 2018. And its evidenced he was likely in very final stages not long after since 99% of his kit is the heavy assault tropper from retribution. You talk about this new content that you could go on for hours about. But list things that were developed and ready half a decade ago
This does not add anything to your point. It is in the game now, soā¦
And??? I donāt think YOU understand, who care if they made it yesterday, or 5 years ago? We have it now.
What are you talking about? None of those things have been around for years, or they would, you know, have been in the game for years. Sure, hero perks or whatever were initially designed for PvE, then pivoted to get added to PvP. WHAT IS YOUR POINT. It is still new content. Not sure what you are trying to say here buddy, lol. New content is new content. Also, fun fact, OW was initially an MMO in development for years, then turned into a hero shooter. It kind of feels like you are trying to say that because they have been developing it for a while, it is not new content, or something. lol
People played them to get the rewards. But the rest of the time it got boring. Especially to those who have played the modes since they were released. It makes sense for new players to experience them, but for veteran players, they just exists. Itās the same with Junkenstein. The OG mode is just repetitive and only worth doing for whatever rewards come out of them.
If they bring back a brand new story and brand new way of playing archives, then sure, itāll be fun for the first few runs.
I very much disagree, Iāve been playing since the closed beta of OW1. I remember when geniiās dash had a bleed, before bastion had a shield. These were some of THE BEST received game modes by the community, and what made it worth replaying is you would get more voice lines/different voice lines at the higher difficulties. The lore behind them also fueled the player base and made giant player spikes every time the game mode came out. You can check google trends, searches show that it peaked almost as much as character releases.
