"Applying Update" bug

For the second time this week I got a bug where as soon I find a match I get an overlay that says “Applying update” and there’s nothing I can do about it. I don’t get loaded into the game, I can’t cancel it and the only way to solve it is to close the game via task manager.
For the first time it happened on Tuesday after the patch that added Lifeweaver. My B-net client said that the pre-release content is downloaded so I launched the game, waited in queue just to see a message in the main menu that a new version is available. So I downloaded it again, got into the game, started a ranked game and bam, “applying update”, 14 minutes competitive suspension plus a loss.
Since tuesday there was no patch, I launch the game, start a competitive game, “applying update”, 60 minutes competitive suspension, another loss.
How does this thing even happen without any actually update to be applied? Seeing the recommended similar topics I’m not the only one this has happened to and it looks like it’s been happening for a while. I’ve finally managed to rank up to diamond after being stuck since the start of the season and now I already have two losses because of this bug.
Edit: I’ve just noticed so many people reporting the exact same bug here so the devs better do something about it and they better do it quick, this is ridiculous.
