Hey guys, just wondering if anyone else is playing the game competitively in 4K? I know that 99% of pros and high ranked players play it at 1920x1080.
My PC is pretty much overkill specs wise:
i9 990
NVIDIA RTX 2080 TI
32GB ram.
So I figured I’d have no problems going 4k.
I recently got a 4K monitor (an Acer predator one forgot the model # but it’s a 27 “ Inch).
I’ve been playing at 4K and getting a pretty stable 300 FPS.
Here are the issues I have had:
-
My monitor does support 144hz and 4K. But I need to overclock the monitor to achieve 144hz. When I do that the display gets all buggy so I’ve decided to just set it at 120hz.
-
When playing the game, near where the FPS is displayed I was getting the three dots “…” I tried to turn on and off reduced buffer but it didn’t fix it. However I found that when I set the rendering scale to “Automatic” instead of 100% I would only see 1 dot. Also the FPS actually increased and is locked at 299-300. Another great thing is that the input lag SIM #’s dropped to 3.3 / 3.3 / 3.3. My question is that is there any disadvantage to me playing with the render scale set to automatic? When set to automatic it sets it to 82% ( not sure why such a particular number).
Everything seems to look and run very well. So I’m guessing it’s fine.
Just wanted to see if anyone else is playing at 4K and what settings they run, and if they have any issues or tips and tricks.
Thanks in advance to anyone with some input.
Is this flexing?
Uh
Anyway
I heard that it causes frame drops and it’s better to have it in a set ammount, however, this doesn’t seem to happen to you so I guess it’s fine
You could try to put it at 75% to see if anything goes better but…
Since you already get the max ammount of frames (300) I highly doubt anything would improve…

Thanks for the reply!
Sorry didn’t mean to flex at all. Just wanted to give an idea about my PC specs, thought it might be relevant.
Appreciate the input though!
Does rendering at 82% in anyway degrade quality or change anything? Again this was the value set when I set it to “Automatic” so hopefully the game knows what it’s doing hehe.

Don’t worry, I was kidding haha
I just heard that putting it on automatic causes performance issues. Maybe (speculation) is because the game variates it when there are too many things on screen like ults, so it might go from 82 to 78 or something like that with you not noticing, again, don’t really know much about it, just heard about it, so, if you could have it in a set amount then I think I’d be better…
Maybe…
Hey, you could try that out, don’t lose much from trying
I guess
I’ve played around with at 4K on a laptop I have that supports 4K (but at 60hz) and an eGpu. its worth nothing that the pros have access to the best hardware there is - an virtually all play at lowest or near lowest settings at 1080p. I think that alone answers the question.
That being said… I play at 1440p on full Epic, I like my eye candy at 120 hz Gsync on my desktop (1080 Ti) and laptop (2070 Mobile + 144 hz Gsync). Its just perfect, but no one pays me to play
Well I think most of the pros probably play on 1920 X 1080 because there are no real 4K 240 or 144hz monitors that I know of.
They all need 2 display ports and need to be over clocked.
I could be wrong.
No, they do it for best possible stable frame rates. By the logic of higher rez, plenty of 1440p’s around these days.
I don’t understand the appeal in 4K PC Gaming.
I’m a huge fan of 4K, but unless your monitor is bigger than 30+ inches it’s a massive waste of processing power for your PC. I’d rather get 144+ frames.

Do you use your pc for a demanding job, editing, or graphic design or something? Jeez you have a beast pc
Its not that far out really if you bought a premium rig right now tbh. If he said a 990x+ RTX Titan … maybe then
For a working adult that buys a rig ever say 5-6 years, its reasonable, with interim upgrades for certain parts. Getting stable frame rates at higher res/settings is thedriver, but if all you want is stability, crank the settings down.
82% render scale means you’re rendering internally at 82% of 4k, meaning not really 4k, that’s why you’re getting better performance.

Is there any disadvantage to running at 82% VS 100%?
It’s the same as running it at lower resolution, except your UI elements are still in “real” 4k.
If that’s disadvantageous that’s up to you.
I mean am I better off staying at 100% or “Automatic “ for stability?
Is there any negative points playing at an unusual render like 82% could have? The performance seems fine but just making sure I’m not missing anything.
IMO don’t play at 4k. At cool as it is to flex that you can get that it’s not worth it. Play at 2k (1440p) @ 144Hz would be ideal IMO.
Last I recall even display port v1.4 can’t handle 4k @144Hz. It maxes out at 120Hz. When you overclock to get the 144Hz you’re reducing the max colors that can be displayed. The bandwith is maxed out at 120hz so you have to give something up to make room for the 144hz.
That’s your choice, if you want real native 4k or do you want better performance?
You’re not missing anything, it just all depends on what do you want. 82% render scale is fine if you want more performance, 100% is also fine if you want them pixels for real.
If you can hit above 120 fps @ 4k, I dont see the problem with doing so.
Yeah I get a solid 299-300 FPS lock at 4K. Even though my monitor can only handle 120 hz.
Still the game seems to run fine, input lag is low so I guess I’ll just keep it at 4K 120hz. Switching now would probably make it hard to adjust to lower resolution settings.
Last question, do you think I would see a noticeable difference going from 120 to 144? Like is it worth lowering my resolution from my native display just to get 24hz?
I’ve never tried a 144hz monitor so not sure how big a difference it is.
Thanks for all the replies and input guys!
