Looking to buy my first ultrawide monitor. I play a lot of FPS shooter games, but overwatch is my most played game. That said, is it worth playing overwatch on a 21:9 setup? Or should I just stick to the traditional 16:9 aspect ratio? Thanks.
Don’t. I used to. It cuts off a LOT of FOV, so you have to look farther to see less. It also eats more framerate because of the higher resolution. Unless you’re playing racing games or flight sims, don’t bother with 21:9.
They won’t add 21:9 support either so it isn’t going to change. You are putting youself at a disadvantage if you buy one.
I don’t think OW supports ultrawide (There’s a big ol’ megathread about it).
Its true that OW cuts down the FoV drastically on 21:9 instead of like literally all other games use it properly,
BUT if ONLY overwatch is your jutification on buying a 21:9 vs 16:9 then you should really ONLY play overwatch.
For every other game then overwatch and even just for mainstream work like text documents or watching videos, I can NOT imagine not having a 21:9 anymore.
And if you plan on buying one anyways, just play OW on 16:9, have some black bars left and right to get full FoV and use the 21:9 properly for absoltuely anything else.
^ this.
21:9 is great for anything but Overwatch. Most other triple A or even indie games properly support hor+ instead of chopping away 30% vertical viewing space. At least you’ll get something like dFOV.
Overwatch added so much verticality to the FPS genre you’ll be considered throwing when not playing at 16:9 (black bars on a 21:9 display).
I went from 3440x1440 100 hz to 2560x1440 160 hz and it’s an upgrade IMO. It’s easier to do everything.
first off: (are you typing on phone because that took super long to type i was super hyped for a long reply)
Second: This is wrong.
If you set it to 16:9 it shows the full 16:9 screen.
Its as if you would take a 16:9 and just glue some black cardboard on the sides.
You imply that when you switch to 16:9 your view not only is chopped off on top and bottom but now on right and left as well. Thats not true.
If you watch a 21:9 video on youtube with a 16:9 you get black bars on top and bottom but the side doesnt get “chopped off” either. Vise versa for 16:9 content on 21:9.
Where did I say it does not display the full 16:9 frame on 21:9? It just adds black bars left and right, making a 21:9 monitor a waste.
… and yes, removing 30% viewing space when playing in full 21:9 mode is “throwing”. Ever tried to track a Genji, Pharah or Doomfist on a 21:9?
The short answer is no. I have a 21:9 monitor. If you switch Overwatch to 21:9, it crops the screen to make it fit which reduces your vertical field of view. So, I leave mine in 16:9 which has black bars on the left or right, but gives me the full picture.
For me, using 16:9 on a 21:9 monitor doesn’t bother me. But it does bother some people. But you would probably be better off buying a 4K monitor in 16:9 ratio than a 21:9 monitor.
If you do buy or have a 21:9 monitor, use the 16:9 ratio in Overwatch for the best experience.
This has absolutely terrible Ultawide Support I just played with it and you pretty much can’t really track anything at all since its pretty much zoomed in and even cuts off portion of a normal 16:9 every other popular game supports and people have never complained about it, nor do you ever see pros ever using them in those games. CSGO, R6, PUBG, FOrtnite, etc
Alright, sorry to have to nerco this thread and this topic.
The only threads i have found which about ultrawide monitors are these:
i applaud LCD’s continued efforts at attempting to sway Blizzard to implement a 21:9 AR which does not break the game.
Thank you, LCD.
However, neither threads address the question which is on my mind and that is:
Ultrawide Monitor users, do you play at:
- 16:9 @ 3440x1440 (*) - Do the black bars bother you too much?
- 21:9 @ 3440x1440 (*) - Is the lack of 30% of FOV really that bad?
- 16:9 @ 2560x1440 (*) - Pixelation an issue for you?
Render Scale, do you play at 100% or at some other value?
Thanks in advance!
I don’t understand what is 21:9, also I think that different country time.
ha ha!
Monitor Display Aspect Ratio, Rocky
Oh!!! Hmm I will check display aspect mine…
Nope mine 16:9
Thank you, Rocky. =)
None, I just don’t play the game. I rather not have an un-optimal or crippled experience. Until Blizzard’s adds real 21:9 support I haven’t turned on the game.
I see.
Please do allow me to express my gratitude for your efforts as an advocate for native true 21:9 AR (without competitive benefits) on the behalf of UW monitor owners.
Thanks, LCD.
You know what Blizz should do, as a compromise…the middle ground for 1.78:1 and 2.33:1 is around say… 2.05:1. Lock the aspect ratio there. 21:9 gets cropped vertically, visually, and 16:9 gets cropped horizontally just as evenly. There, advantages and disadvantages for both aspect ratios! Problem solved!
I tried my best and you’re welcome, however it was really @DrLegend who inspired me to talk about it on here. He was the guy who asked about it at Blizzcon 2016 during OW QnA.
