Any tips for new Junkrat players?

He’s the one hero in the game that I’m absolutely useless on. I even mess up his ULT somehow.

So…does any Junk main have any tips they’d be willing to share?

I’ll tell Toast to get in here if he somehow misses it.

not a junk main but I have had some good games with him over the years. my tip is to always have one mine ready in case you end up in a 1v1 situation and want to either kill your opponent very quickly with the combo or simply escape

also use the environment to stall your ult to keep the other team guessing/scrambled

So basically like Tracer or Sombra, right? As in, “I get this kill in x amount of time or I’m out”?

I have been trying him out lately and it s an absolute blast. I just get into a room and spam the door

Watching some good Junk video on YT might be best?

for me it’s one or the other. attempt the kill or escape if you don’t see yourself surviving it

Hmm, I like that.

I’m gonna practice his projectile arc now so I can actually kill with him and do the combo. Thanks so much!

if it comes down to it, spamming a chokepoint or objective from a safe distance is also a viable option!

old, but still useful

Only it’s missing 5 heroes by this point

  1. You are the strongest in close corridors with little space to move around and while shooting into choke points. Your damage is huge but it’s hard to land. Choke points and doorways are making this task infinitely easier, especially when you aim from angle where they bounce off crossing whole doors rather than only the middle section of it (so let’s say you spam from left side of the doors and bounce your nades from right doorframe so it zigzag in the doors cutting whole doors from getting passed)
  2. Learn to land grenade + mine combo consistently. Practice doing that from medium range. From point blank range it’s very easy to do, but 10 meters and more it requires a bit of timing on the mine.
  3. Close the distance or stay out of LOS. As a Junk you can do damage when you don’t even see your enemy. At point blank range you are more deadly than Reaper so it’s your best range to fight at. Second best is long range spam into choke points or distracted by others players. Long range shots are either predicted (because you spam into predictable path like choke points or tank is chasing someone) or it’s pure luck because someone happened to peek the corner. Avoid mid range, hitscan shred you there, people are aware of you and can dodge grenades reliably.
  4. For tire I don’t know, it’s not a rocket science. Get as close as you can from the hardest to reach spot. Abuse wall climbing with it, try to drop tire from places where people have the least amount of time to react. Avoid choke points like a plague because those tires are easy to one tap with snipers, Firestrikes, nades etc. Instead flank and instantly use tire or drop it from highground

Yeah, in which there are other videos that cover those 5 heroes, but for the most part. The footage itself is very solid.

Thanks! I watched it and it definitely helped quite a bit

For his ult, try so wiggle your mouse and abuse wallclimbing and just in general beingt above buildings.

This works on the ground too, wiggling and going towards a target can throw them off often.

(Not a tipp you should use but, often you can just use both your Mines to just jump into the enemy team, press ult and instant detonate, got me lots of triple or quadra kills lol, make sure youre behind them though, they should obviously not see you as you cast your utl)

His mine can be used almost exactly like Ashe’s coach gun to disengage from enemies. It is advisable to try to save a mine if you can. Also jumping when you detonate your mine is imperative.

Lead and predict your shots, your nades travel relatively slow. Use your mines as an escape tool, keep one mine in reserve for that. Remain mobile. Use traps in places where the enemy goes (around payload, through passages, one health packs)
Spam the “DIPSTICK” voiceline whenever you can.

Flankrat is best rat. “Why is there a Junkrat here?!” is one of the scariest things you can ever hear. However you can’t perma flank due to your kit…So you’ll do a lot of switching it up to keep the other team confused. But it does often depend on having the space to set up in advance and being confident in your mechanics so that you can actually hit your shots once you’re in their backline. If you miss you’ll probably just feed. Careful doing this if they have a Dva.

If you can’t commit to a flank due to space/sightlines then control a room on an awkward off angle for them. Preferably with an escape route/healthpack. Think of it like being a nuisance on Tracer without actually going in. You can get a lot of value by just harassing their backline from a location they can’t contest since Junkrat in a room is terrifying for almost everybody.

Learn the line ups on every map. You will spend some time “spamming” and actually knowing where people stand/how to hit them will get you a lot of ult charge/pressure you’d otherwise miss out on. This is not a viable playstyle on its own though. You won’t get enough value to win in high ranks if this is the bulk of your playstyle but it is something you need.

Don’t take a fair fight against pretty much anyone ever. Just surprise combo them from cover/an off angle/the sky and move on if you miss.

Positioning and timing are everything. Your kit won’t allow you to stand your ground or escape like other heroes can.

Learn to aim, airshots are important. You will miss combos and being able to follow up with an airshot will confirm so many kills.

Close range tires from stupid locations are the most consistent. There are some maps with nice rooftops such as Rialto but generally speaking using tire from range gives good players too much warning and it’ll get shot down.

Don’t waste your mines or take a fight without them if you can help it.

Open space is evil and should be avoided.

Bind Dipstick and use it whenever you get a kill.

We need Jesters in here to cover the stuff I’ve obviously forgotten/to go into more detail if he feels like it.

Absolutely yes :joy:

My three favorite comps are Tracer/Sombra, Tracer/Echo, and Tracer/Junk. It’s so easy to kill people fast with a Junk and Tracer on them.

Does Dva eat mines too, so you won’t have an escape route if she’s on you?

I like this a lot. It’s the same playstyle as my main, except a little more map dependent.

Do you have a code to practice this? I’ve been doing VAXTA but the bots aren’t that hard to hit because of their predictable flight path.

Will do. It’s like “Too slow” or “Boop”. Necessary.

Yes and it’s why she’s such a hard counter. You can preset a mine if necessary but be careful it doesn’t get destroyed. Realistically though you’ll die if a Dva flies in to contest you which is where the timing aspect comes in.
Pain

Like I said make sure you mix it up. Your kit is strongest when you take people by surprise so keep them guessing what you’ll be doing each fight.

0BZE7 is ok. Go up to high ground there’s an area with bots in the air but it’s not that difficult. Decent to start out with I suppose.
I prefer deathmatch/generally just playing for aim practice though.
