Any reason for no new updates?

I’m sure there’s a reason, but I’m trying to understand why we’re not seeing any real updates to OW1. Blizzard has already confirmed the following:

  • There are multiple content updates (new heroes, maps, etc.) in the works and ready for the eventual OW2 launch.
  • Outside of PvE, all new content for OW2 will also be made available for OW1.

If any of the aforementioned content updates are ready, I can’t rationalize not launching them on OW1 as soon as possible.

I have to imagine Blizzard has at least one new hero ready to go, just waiting for the OW2 launch. If that hero is going to be made available to OW1 anyway, why not just release him/her/it now? Anyone who is planning on buying OW2 isn’t all of a sudden going to change their plans because there will be one less new hero in the roster.

What will make people change their plans is a continued absence of any new content to this environment. Blizzard can’t dangle a carrot in front of us forever; at some point, they need to deliver.

A new hero, map, whatever won’t save OW1, but it may keep it on life support long enough to keep us interested in its sequel.

The way they put it, they could release a new hero before OW2

But taking the time to tune them and give them cosmetics etc for the live game (when they could’ve been designed with 5v5 already in mind) would mean OW2 comes out later

Most of the development time so far seems to have been for the PvE so the PvP stuff is only partly finished

Frankly idc what the reason is because I’m still enjoying OW1 🤷

They posted about some weather stuff yesterday. Which I imagine will be disabled in PvP.

So that’s something.

if you want content and updates. Or any kind of communication from the devs. You are playing the wrong game.

i think because they are gonna change/modify the game engine. so they would have to double work to release one of the new heroes currently with the outdated engine. maybe before overwatch 2 releases they will update the game engine then maybe new heroes will be rolled in?

I thought they said OW1 would keep the current engine…maybe I heard wrong.

I still don’t see why we need a constant stream of new things to keep people interested in the game and series

Like, what ever happened to just enjoying the game for the game and not for the add-ons?

i dont have a clue either but i thought someone made a thread about it a while ago. i mean it is getting changed due to weather patterns and such. new models too? basically an upgraded engine but changed?

It’s not as easy as just “releasing them now”. Vigorous testing needs to be done. Bug fixes, balance adjustments. Lots of internal things that we’re unaware of.

I’ve heard the devs speak about releasing another new hero a couple times. It boils down to them being able to do it, but it would mean delaying Overwatch 2. They don’t want to do that.

All new content is being made on the updated engine. So, if they release one of the heroes/maps they already made, they’d have to convert it to work with the one we have now. If, for some reason, they make a completely new one on the old engine, they’d still have to overhaul it so it works in overwatch2 whenever that’s happening. I also strongly suspect the new heroes have been tailored specifically with 5v5 in mind, so there’s also that.

the game is different, the art and limitations on the engine wont work with ow1, theyd have to redo all animations/art, balance and potentially some mechanics of the hero depending on if they rely on the new engine, its not as easy as just copy paste

Sounds like I just misunderstood their plans for the engine. I thought I remembered them saying when they originally announced OW2 that the first game wasn’t going to get the upgraded engine. Based on what I’ve been reading, that appears to have been wrong.

So I guess I can understand the technical limitations of releasing new content now vs later. Just seems they really shot themselves in the foot with this engine upgrade, and maybe should have reallocated resources to wrapping that up first, so they could release it and get some content out to the public earlier.

Judging from the PvP update where they announced 5v5/122, they’re not ready to give us anything. They’d done work on hardly any of the tanks, some characters were sealed in the Dungeon of Reworks™, and still other characters had bits lopped off them or were going to have bits lopped off them. There’s not much point putting up 5v5/122 Experimentals or even an Arcade mode if it’s barely gotten off the ground.

Lord knows it’d be nice to get a new map or two, though. I’d even settle for payload mirror maps in QP.

Big new feature “soon”
And previously gearing up for that 5v5 announcement.

Because OW1 does not make money anymore.
That is it

It’s the same engine for OW1 and 2. It’s just an updated one.

That’s kind of a big suspicion considering the rest of the heroes have mainly received number changes.

I think the tanks, specifically Winston, are the most changed heroes so far. If they’re going to tailor heroes for 5v5 they need better establish what that is going to look like for the other preexisting non-tank heroes first.

Anniversary ends in about 100 minutes…maybe we hear something then

Jeff confirmed it’s a complete overhaul and if we look at the development history of Overwatch from the very beginning to now, it will be rebuild from scratch and made future proof
OW2 engine will be very different from OW1

I heard they’re secretly working on OW3 as well
