Any other “old” people who are super into this game? Questions for you!

I’m 28, by no means old, but kinda sorta still old (especially for how into this game I get). So a bunch of questions to the older crowd:

-do you feel at a disadvantage when you play with/against 16 year olds who seem to have perfect reflexes and snap accuracy?
-did you give up hopes and dreams of being a god tracer/genji/widow because one day, like me, you realized you just aren’t gonna be as good as a twenty year old?
-what’s your highest rank?
-who’s your favorite hero and why? (Mine is genji because when I’m on I am ON- and…”I was hoping for a challenge!”)
Is consistency a problem?
-do you play better after a few beers? I do…
-do you like me, struggle with taking comp really seriously, but then see an owl game and be like “lol I should just calm down”
-do you wish you could be a god dps but excel at tank?
-what are your STRONG traits
-what are your WEAK traits

And any other thoughtful discussion!

Much love,
Heroe

And any other thoughts!!

I’m 36 and usually pretty well medicated, here’s some answers:

-do you feel at a disadvantage when you play with/against 16 year olds who seem to have perfect reflexes and snap accuracy?

Not particularly, I do well enough for my rank I think. If I’m feeling ‘slow’ and tired, I’ll stick to Tanks or Support that don’t need me to be fast.

-did you give up hopes and dreams of being a god tracer/genji/widow because one day, like me, you realized you just aren’t gonna be as good as a twenty year old?

I gave up on those long before OW was a thing.

-what’s your highest rank?

2475, kicked around there for a couple of seasons, then just before Christmas everything went a bit awry and I’ve struggled to get back since.

-who’s your favorite hero and why? (Mine is genji because when I’m on I am ON- and…”I was hoping for a challenge!”)

Widowmaker. Not only am I one of those AWP people from Counter Strike, I just love her story, aesthetic, accent, and character in general. She’s just a perfect storm of awesome. I play D.Va more though as I find her a bit more accommodating for my health issues.

Special mentions for Sombra as well, she’s close to Widowmaker in cool stakes and fun to play. Also Orisa, because I feel like I’m pretty good with her, and she’s so adorable.

Is consistency a problem?

Can be first couple of matches but once I warm up its okay. If I’m not feeling it I’m not feeling it.

-do you play better after a few beers? I do…

Can’t drink, and when I have the answer has been a resounding ‘NO’. Coffee on the other hand is always good.

-do you like me, struggle with taking comp really seriously, but then see an owl game and be like “lol I should just calm down”

No, I mean, I play Comp because I want to win, I want to play the game how it’s meant to be played. It bugs me when others don’t seem to want to do that, especially since there are so many game modes where not doing that is the objective.

-do you wish you could be a god dps but excel at tank?

What? I AM a deity of DPS, and Tanking, and indeed Healing. :stuck_out_tongue:

-what are your STRONG traits

Awareness for sure, general game knowledge, who to counter to who and how.

-what are your WEAK traits

Reflexes I guess.

Borrowing the italics from the above post to save myself some typing.

I’m 41, almost 42 (ugh)

-do you feel at a disadvantage when you play with/against 16 year olds who seem to have perfect reflexes and snap accuracy?

I don’t really see much disadvantage. Although i’m pretty much a tank main so even when they are faster i tend to live through it anyway.

-did you give up hopes and dreams of being a god tracer/genji/widow because one day, like me, you realized you just aren’t gonna be as good as a twenty year old?

I’ve never been a good sniper in any game. Genji i just don’t like - i leave him to the glory potg hunters. Tracer i’m not too bad at.

-what’s your highest rank?

2350 ish. Down around 1900 atm, serves me right for playing in the last week of comp.

-who’s your favorite hero and why? (Mine is genji because when I’m on I am ON- and…”I was hoping for a challenge!”)
Mei. I love the trollish aspect of her and her slow is a great equaliser against those younger and a little faster than me.

Is consistency a problem?

Not really. I never played expecting to be a grandmaster anyways

-do you play better after a few beers? I do…

Strangely yes but there is a perfect point that one more beer and it all goes to hell

-do you like me, struggle with taking comp really seriously, but then see an owl game and be like “lol I should just calm down”

Nah, i take comp as seriously as i can take a game. It is a game after all.

-do you wish you could be a god dps but excel at tank?

I think i’m a reasonably good tank. Not too bad on some dps but awful on others. Overall im happy enough.

-what are your STRONG traits

I can stay chilled most of the time. Definately helps when you get the trolls etc. Also i have good map awareness

-what are your WEAK traits

Bad reflexes and a complete inability to play a healer. Even on Mercy i find myself charging forward with my little gun.

Hey fella,

I’m 28 as well. Well, I’m playing FPS games since 1999. I have been many times in between of competitive and casual scene, mostly as a coach. Personally, I don’t feel like my reflexes have diminished dramatically, but I was never of an insane fragger. I’m very good at coordination and taking tactical kills. However, it’s harder for us to adjust to new games, because of the continuously changing environment. My favorite hero is widowmaker. Beer and other alcohol beverages help to stay calm. Stress tends to make your aim worse and involve complex thoughts which distract your mind.

Weakness: Out of Topic

In my case, the things are even worse. I’m a leftie and I love statistics. I used software long time ago to check and compare my keystrokes with the rest. My strafe movement keystrokes are the exact opposite of a right handed person i.e. I move as a mirror image whenever I duel. It might not sound as a disadvantage at first glance, but imagine what happens when you play a flanker. People can hit you easier, because you move parallel with them and as a flanker, most of the times you are outnumbered in between of your backlines. Also, they tend to focus me more unconsciously because I become an easier target in overtime parties.

Also, being a leftie means that I hit space using my wrist and I hit “shift” and “A” with the same finger. Furthermore, doomfist and Moira hands are reversed and the model hands are reversed too.

vs Muscle Memories of over 10 years for playing FPS. No, I dont feel disadvantage.

The time is problem, young people have a lot of freedom and great ambition. I dont have appetite for both things.

Round up 2800 on EU and I have no smurf.

Reinhardt and Zarya … well I like to lead and I try to stay out of common FPS-heroes like Soldier, Widow … you know “the same old story”.

It’s not problem, just to have a team spirit and stay positivity.

I drink a few beers but play only QP and Arcade. I hate someone playing drunk on Rank, that ruins fun and it’s pointless. Get better? No, I need clear mind.

Nope. I firmly believe the flexible strategy is a lot of matter than being blind and narrowed for 2-2-2.

No tunnelvision

I cant handle low-sensivity.

Sincerely 30 years.

29 years old here, turning 30 in August.

  • do you feel at a disadvantage when you play with/against 16 year olds who seem to have perfect reflexes and snap accuracy?

I think my reflexes and aim are still pretty good for my age, so no, not really, although I think gamesense is my biggest strength. I think it also helps that I’ve been playing FPS games for over 15 years now.

  • did you give up hopes and dreams of being a god tracer/genji/widow because one day, like me, you realized you just aren’t gonna be as good as a twenty year old?

Nah, but snipers/flankers aren’t my cup of tea anyway, I mostly end up playing support or tank.

  • what’s your highest rank?

Low diamond before I stopped playing comp a few seasons ago. I never bothered keeping up with the decay, but I can keep up with Masters players in other game modes. I might wanna try climbing again once I have the time and desire for it.

  • who’s your favorite hero and why?

Zenyatta, I like the simplicity of his kit and his overall usefulness. He has obvious weaknesses, but he can overcome those if your aim is good enough. Also popping an impactful Transcendence feels pretty good.
Other heroes I like playing a lot are: Winston, Zarya, Lúcio, Hanzo and Mei.

  • Is consistency a problem?

Aim-wise definitely. One day I go full beast mode and, the other day I can’t hit the broad side of the barn. Good thing there’s always Winston if I happen to have a bad day.

  • do you play better after a few beers? I do…

I like to convince myself I pull off an amazing drunk Hanzo, but it’s probably not that great.

  • do you like me, struggle with taking comp really seriously, but then see an owl game and be like “lol I should just calm down”

I don’t really play comp anymore so I can’t say that I do.

  • do you wish you could be a god dps but excel at tank?

I consider myself pretty solid on a few DPS heroes (Soldier, Hanzo, Pharah) but it’s not something I strive for. I’m mostly a flex player who ends up playing support and tank a lot.

  • what are your STRONG traits

Gamesense/awareness, flexibility, team player

  • what are your WEAK traits

Inconsistent performance, impatient at times

  • anyone over the age of 25 in gm or top 500? (diamond for me)

Not me

  • why is it that you think you are into this game? (aesthetic, lore, and wonderful diversity of abilities and roles)

I came from TF2 and was hungry for another class-based shooter. I like the characters and setting.

  • if you could change one thing about the game/community, what would it be?

Bring back the avoid player feature.

-why is it that you think you are into this game? (aesthetic, lore, and wonderful diversity of abilities and roles)
There’s so much more to it than point and click shooting, being team and objective based. The aesthetic and lore absolutely build on the attraction.

-if you could change one thing about the game/community, what would it be?
Be more forgiving about hero picks, but also be less devoted to given heroes and be more willing to switch themselves.

I see too much of both sides of that, people flip out when I pick Widow or Sombra, but while I am more than willing to switch up and play other heroes and roles when it’s not working, I see the exact same people who complain about those picks stick rigidly to those deemed ‘meta’ because they think that their pick somehow is never wrong.

The best games I’ve had have been where basically everyone on both teams has used 3-4 different heroes, the whole roster pretty much has been used because of the counter-picking and strategy switching that went on.

I’m 38, here are my 2 cents:

-do you feel at a disadvantage when you play with/against 16 year olds who seem to have perfect reflexes and snap accuracy?
On certain heroes mechanically yes, but I’m not experienced in FPS games so I’d say it’s more down to my FPS experience rather then my age

-did you give up hopes and dreams of being a god tracer/genji/widow because one day, like me, you realized you just aren’t gonna be as good as a twenty year old?
Yes, those heroes were never going to be where I spent my time, I was always more interested playing tank or support anyway. What I like about Overwatch is that twitch reflexes are not the only thing which determine a players skill level, and in fact I feel there is way to much emphasis placed on it

-what’s your highest rank?
I was Plat season 1 but I never should have been placed there. I’ve hit gold consistently in seasons after that. My aim is to reach Plat “Legitimately”. Truth be told my rank doesn’t matter to me, I just want to be at a rank my skill reflects, that’s where you have the best games and are able to influence the outcome
-who’s your favorite hero and why? (Mine is genji because when I’m on I am ON- and…”I was hoping for a challenge!”)
Mercy, she’s the hero I keep going back to. I like playing support. I also play Sym, Orisa, Dva, Pharah, Winston, Moira Zen, S76, and Pharah. I would say I’m more of a flex player. I let everyone else pick and go for what we need. Usually that will mean playing tank or support.

Is consistency a problem?
Yes on some heroes more then others. Sometimes I log in and it’s just not working on certain heroes, and other times I’m playing extremely well without much effort. It’s strange tbh

-do you play better after a few beers? I do…
Yes although too many and it’s a disaster. First few loosen me up and probably make me play better, after that though if I continue it will start to go down hill. Playing for too long whilst enjoying beer has seen me fall down to even bronze at times. That’s not really an issue as sober me will then climb back out without issue.

-do you like me, struggle with taking comp really seriously, but then see an owl game and be like “lol I should just calm down”
I take comp seriously from the point of view that I will do everything within the rules to win and will always try my best…but ultimately its just a game, I play for enjoyment and I’ll never take it too seriously. Things like seeing poor team comps and players refusing to build a team do get to me though

-do you wish you could be a god dps but excel at tank?
At DPS no, there are enough DPS players in the game, I’d prefer to be excelling as a tank or support

-what are your STRONG traits
I would say the fact I can play a good amount of heroes at my own level and also the fact that I’m a team player. It’s a sad thing to list as a strength but I’ll never leave a game no matter whats happening.

-what are your WEAK traits
Can’t play as snipers, a bad team comp will tilt me, I don’t speak enough on the mic

y’all are the best, thanks for indulging me!

to answer my own questions…

-do you feel at a disadvantage when you play with/against 16 year olds who seem to have perfect reflexes and snap accuracy?

i honestly feel like i dont carry my weight sometimes when compared to younger ‘high speed’ dps

-did you give up hopes and dreams of being a god tracer/genji/widow because one day, like me, you realized you just aren’t gonna be as good as a twenty year old?

yes lol, hit me like a week ago

-what’s your highest rank?

3004

-who’s your favorite hero and why?

genji for his ability to chain things with dash reset, smart dragonblades, awesome deflects, and a constant and highly rewarding challenge

_ Is consistency a problem?_

i need to warm up for like 45 minutes before comp

_ -do you play better after a few beers? I do…_

yes, something about the dopamine release helps me be a bit less focused on my shortcomings and gives a bit of an edge since i care a bit less, counter intuitively helping every facet of my performance. to many tho and thats a diff story…

_ -what are your STRONG traits_

PATIENCE, GAME SENSE, POSITIVE ATTITUDE, DIFFUSING CONFLICT, anddddd Orisa.

_ -what are your WEAK traits_

Inconsistent aiming, hot and cold streaks, frustration at myself (and only me) when it isnt working, wasting time tweaking sensitivities to try and fix problems that would be best solved by just powering through an off day.

I’m 33 and don’t feel or share any of your concerns

I don’t know how old the others are. I don’t use voice chat. But my reflexes are just as fine as of a 16 y.o.

Never wanted to play Genji, Tracer Widow

You can check yourself. But I don’t play that cancerfest called competitive mode

Was Mercy until the rework. Now I play mostly Zenyatta, Orisa, Moira, Roadhog, Junkrat, ect. No specific favorite.

Haaaha hell no! I just feel that I play better. But in reality…no  And I don’t have a more charming voice if I try to sing while drunk

Comp is a joke. And I don’t watch OWL. I never understood why is watching any kind of sport interesting.

Nope. DPS is my least favorite role. I love to support and tank.

Overall situational awerness and map observation

I’m not patient enough with people who don’t want to adapt to changing situations.

May the 4th be with u

33 years old - lots and lots of TFC and TF2 before this game :]

_-do you feel at a disadvantage when you play with/against 16 year lds who seem to have perfect reflexes and snap accuracy?

Yea I do feel like my reflexes are a lot slower than like 10 years ago but what I like about OW is that there are always several heroes to choose from that don’t need hyperspeed reflexes of the progenjimain.

-did you give up hopes and dreams of being a god tracer/genji/widow because one day, like me, you realized you just aren’t gonna be as good as a twenty year old?

Yea Genji doesnt work for me, the rest is fine for some reason.

-what’s your highest rank?

4070 SR :]

-who’s your favorite hero and why? (Mine is genji because when I’m on I am ON- and…”I was hoping for a challenge!”)

I flex - It varies. I think Ana and Zarya are REALLY well designed ability wise but I enjoy playing most heroes.

-Is consistency a problem?

Yes working full time does that. I’m a lot better in the weekends when Ive had a bit more sleep.

-do you play better after a few beers? I do…

Not in comp, its too fast if ive had a couple of beers. In QP YES!

-do you like me, struggle with taking comp really seriously, but then see an owl game and be like “lol I should just calm down”

No I don’t really take it that serious at all, its not my job its just a bit of fun to relax.

-do you wish you could be a god dps but excel at tank?

God Dps God Tank God healer - its all good for the SR climb. DPS usually feels a bit more rewarding which is unfortunatly a problem with the gamedesign but one that is impossible to fix I feel

-what are your STRONG traits

Gamesense - communication.

-what are your WEAK traits

Inconsistency

Not particularly. There’s good and bad players of all ages, and MM puts me up against similar players…

Nope. Even at 20 I didn’t have this kind of skill, and FPSs have never been my thing.

Gold bordering plat. Could probably improve a little if I put more time in.

I’ve always been drawn to healers, and it’s one of the things that frew to me OW when normally I shun FPSs.
But I also really like Pharah. Been playing her a ton lately. (Also went through a Sym phase after her rework). Thinking about how to approach the enemy where they don’t expect – to outmaneuver them – that’s more my thing than god reflexes.

Nope

Never got into drinking myself, somehow

If anything I think I take it too seriously, leading to me getting stressed out. Maybe I should start drinking afterall… xP

The frustrating thing about support can be doing your best for the team, but they can’t get picks. But I would say it’s less wishing that I could be a ‘god dps’ and more wishing I had one to support.

positioning

multitasking. Like, for example, that Oasis program that gives you targeted criticism based on your stats… it tells me I need to defend myself more even as mercy – I tend to focus entirely on the healing/damage boost. Usually similar to other criticisms… I tend to do a few core things well but the extra things to get the most out of a character or whatever, that’s where I need to improve.

Hey, I’m 27.

I also have problems with reflexes. Why? I didn’t play FPS until I was already 21 and it took me a while to care a whole lot about them. Also, I have degenerative disc disease that causes me a hell of a lot of pain for existing in general. I’m medicated prettt well some days and I can’t play Tracer too well that way. I am getting pretty good with Doomfist, though. But I just like him better anyways.

I don’t mind not being DPS at all. I am perfectly happy being Tank or Support, but I do play Sombra a good deal. She’s kinda support and she’s fun.

I don’t care what age you are, if you’re better than me, good on ya.

I take comp as seriously as I should. I do what I am supposed to do, try to work with my team. I play to win, but I know I might not. There are a lot of factors and most of them are out of your hands. There’s 11 other people per game after all. Do your part, mute and report terrible people and have fun. SR is not something to care about. I don’t get the appeal. I don’t exactly wanna walk around with an Overwatch medal hanging from my neck.

I never had hopes and dreams of being any of those characters. I always go for the lesser chosen in a game. I play Tank and Support. My top 5 are Sombra, Winston, Moira, Orisa and Rein. Mostly tanking and supporting. Most of my Sombra play was from my first few months of play, which is when people hates you for picking her. I’ll pick her back up when she gets buffed.

Highest rank was 2350ish. Never quite made it to platinum, but I’m honestly just waiting to find good people to play with me consistently and make a good team before I make a career of competitive.

Consistency is always a problem if you are playing with random people. I also have my personal BAD days when I just can’t seem to adapt or I ply against some particularly tricky opponents.

Strong traits? I’m pretty level headed and I don’t mind calling the shots if my current group lets me. The communication aspect of the game can be really interesting when everyone trusts in you and you have enough game knowledge to make those differences. Made a few friends that way.

I don’t drink because meds.

My weak trait is that I end up taking long breaks to play other games and then come back with my memory of the controls a little rusty.

Early 30s, and honestly, the only time I feel old and slow, is when i’m actually tired. When I was a young man (13-25) I could play tired no problem. This is no longer the case. When i’m tired my body practically forces me to sleep lol. Which i don’t really mind.

Aim is just as good as it was, much more level-headed and relaxed while playing games. Don’t really get pissed off anymore. Have been practicing soldier/mcree/widow and had some really solid games. It has to do with practice. Age doesn’t have that much to do with it. Though I do lots of cognitive enhancement type things (supplements/nootropics).

The main reason older people aren’t that great at games is motivation/time/priorities. Reflexes have went down a bit but that won’t effect your ability to dominate pubs in overwatch.

As with anything in life, repetition is the mother of skill. If you really practice aiming you’ll get good at it even if you’re 50.

I’m 29, soon to hit the big three-oh.

-do you feel at a disadvantage when you play with/against 16 year olds who seem to have perfect reflexes and snap accuracy?

Absolutely. Shooters are probably my favorite genre of game, but I can feel my reflexes and response times starting to slow down and deteriorate. Kind of a bummer.

-did you give up hopes and dreams of being a god tracer/genji/widow because one day, like me, you realized you just aren’t gonna be as good as a twenty year old?

Well I have a completely separate issue when it comes to Tracer/Genji. I play on console, and use a controller. But I never learned how to use a proper claw grip on a controller, and have become so accustomed to using the controller my own way, that I can’t change. The problem is, the way I hold my controller while playing makes it impossible to jump and fire accurately at the same time. It’s why I suck at modern shooters with jump-pack mechanics (Titanfall, Call of Duty, etc.), and why I suck with Genji. If I try to jump and shoot at the same time, it requires switching my fingers around and this invariably means I will miss almost all my shots.

-what’s your highest rank?

Low plat in both competitive and competitive CTF. Which is where I am at now.

-who’s your favorite hero and why?

McCree, Hanzo, Zarya, Rein, Orisa. Basically the big or slow characters who can play more methodically, and require more intelligence/clever positioning than reflex skills.

28 here.

do you feel at a disadvantage when you play with/against 16 year olds who seem to have perfect reflexes and snap accuracy?

I rarely face so young people on the SR i play but no i still have good reflexes.

-did you give up hopes and dreams of being a god tracer/genji/widow because one day, like me, you realized you just aren’t gonna be as good as a twenty year old?

I tried playing mad Tracer but I ended up with motion sickness so I don’t play her anymore

-what’s your highest rank?

GM - 4320

-who’s your favorite hero and why? (Mine is genji because when I’m on I am ON- and…”I was hoping for a challenge!”)

Reinhardt and Reaper

Is consistency a problem?
-do you play better after a few beers? I enjoy drinking beer while in game but It doesn’t improve antything…
-do you like me, struggle with taking comp really seriously, but then see an owl game and be like “lol I should just calm down”

Not really seriously i just try my best.

-do you wish you could be a god dps but excel at tank?

Sometimes yeah:D

-what are your STRONG traits

Map and tactic awareness , experience on outsmarting the enemy

-what are your WEAK traits

Not the best aim accuracy.

-do you feel at a disadvantage when you play with/against 16 year olds who seem to have perfect reflexes and snap accuracy?

Not really. I play quite casually and Overwatches hero roster is diverse enough that i can play characters that dont need snap accuracy

-did you give up hopes and dreams of being a god tracer/genji/widow because one day, like me, you realized you just aren’t gonna be as good as a twenty year old?

Again not really. I could devote more time into those characters but theres 20+ more to choose from

-what’s your highest rank?

2600 something last time i played beyond placements. I tend to just do them because i like the avatars but don’t actually want a golden gun.

-who’s your favorite hero and why?
It wad Mercy back before the rework, she was okay (but op and boring at 2.0), but the current nerf means i’m relying on my team way too much and its boring. Now it’s sombra, a lot of my mercy skills transferred well to her and i enjoy being a pain.

Is consistency a problem?
If i’m tired after work

-do you play better after a few beers?
Nope

-do you like me, struggle with taking comp really seriously, but then see an owl game and be like “lol I should just calm down”
I tend to ignore comp. I can take it seriously but anger from other players puts me off that mode.

-do you wish you could be a god dps but excel at tank?
Id like to be better dps and good support

-what are your STRONG traits
Game awareness and planning ahead. Im pretty good at heros like sombra and sym because i can bait people

-what are your WEAK traits
I’m too used to playing support so i sometimes forget to actually dps when im soldier and sombra and over focus on healing.

  • nah, as older player i have more gaming experience/sense what team needs (lower ranks are filled with kids just as much as higher ranks, the huge egos of young people do not help them much either - the VC fights between kids i had endure because each of them wanted to play Genji were not a rare occasion)

  • kind of but not because of age, mostly because nobody wants to play support and we need one so i ended up playing one. In other games i always played rogue like characters (which are usually high risk and require good reflexes) and did well on those.

  • was 2700. Once again i play support and solo and it is bad combo to climb with i think. If i really wanted to climb i would probably instalock dps every match or create premade.

  • Depends on role. I like reaper for dps (i guess bit of roleplaying aspect here), Zarya for tank (i like her utility and mobility) and currently most of all Moira because of resource management, mobility, choices between dps and healing etc. - she is very engaging and fund character imo.

  • i don’t drink alcohol

  • i don’t watch OWL. OW is second game for me, i mainly play(ed) GW2. I play OW when i want just to shoot things and have quick pvp matches without necessary character progression and complexity like MMORPGs have.

  • i want to be god WM but rarely get to play her  so not much possibility to practice

  • i play for team and focus on objectives. Map awareness as well?

  • can’t aim as good as pro WMs/Ana’s

I’m just gonna answer this.
-Do you play better after a few beers?
I think I do but in reality I’m probably way worse. If I’m proper drunk I don’t care if I win or lose so the game is more enjoyable to me.
