Any hint on how to play Orisa?

So, recently I started to play the big centaur, by now what I try to do with her is to place her shield near walls so I can run to cover when is destroyed…

but somewhat I feel like that the shield is melted like snow on the sun (today I struggled vs a hanzo doin it , but prob there was some other damage too lol) and when shield is destroyed despite my cover or my fortify i just… die… and I stuggle when there is a brawl…

about the ulti usually I try to place it aswell behind a cover (more than my shield) when there is a huge fight or we need to apply more and more pressure…

for the halt!.. my usage before was kinda random, right now I use it only to try to setup kills for my teammates.

but somewhat I still feel I play her bad.

any hint?

please I will ask this to people from diamond + (no offence to lower ranks I’m a gold aswell but I think is better to ask on someone who climbed with her)

A cancer strategy I use on Orisa is to advance a bit into the enemy lines with the shield (while or better before doing so, use the countdown voicelines for your healers to get ready) and when the shield is broken, I use fortify and just go forward, even past the enemy shield for a second. When Fortify’s duration started when your shield broke, it will likely end just 1 or 2 second(s) before the next widened Roadhog shield can be melted.

As an alternative, if you want to hold the line, use the countdown communication again for your healers, and when the shield breaks, use fortify. The dmg reduction and the (hopefully) strong healing will waste enough time for the next shield to be about to be ready, but both tactics mentioned only work if the healing is strong, do not do that with Lucio-Zen combos.

Another tip from my side: While you advance or hold the line with fortify, try to select a place with safe natural cover before doing so (I do it while placing the first shield and while it’s breaking), just in case you have to use Fortify too early or the next barrier won’t come fast enough, so you don’t die after Fortify ends.

Unfortunately, I learned to play orisa all by myself without any guides, which could mean my “tip” is absolute trash, but it worked in high plat/low diamond, so I guess I can leave it there.

Edit(s):
If you die during fortify a few times, do not touch the tactics for the rest of the round/match, I am used to be able to just run forward with those, if you die, I cannot help you from there on. Check your healers (Lucio-Zen is trash for the strategies, the speed might help but you will have to sacrifice yourself) Maybe they are running spam comps, high damage/burst comps, or your Dps/ healers can’t really follow up.

You should do the “select a safe place” for both starting and ending of the advance, in both cases you also need to consider having LOS to your supports. (A connection with them is most important.)
Shooting slows your advance down, so shooting during Fortify is good when holding the line, but when going in, closing the distance is more important.

I also edited parts of the original text because some things were missing.

Eh all I can say she’s not for every situation. As you say her shield melts like butter under sustained fire. If your the only shield tank you might want to rethink your choice, after all the nerfs Orisa only really works with Double shield if you want to push the objective.

Other wise stay more towards the back and protect the healers/snipers and let the other tank draw the fire. Practice your long range shield throws to let you put it on point if you have to, but in general range is Orisa’s friend.

As for Halt after the nerf to it’s tether range combined with it’s increased speed (making it harder to time right) it’s not as useful as it used to be. Still good to force enemies to group up for AoE attacks, pull people out of shields so your team can snipe/hook/etc them. Or you know environmental kills if the map allows. Though again given the reduced range it’s harder to pull off.

As for Fortify try and save it if possible when your shield is still up but don’t use it too late. If you fortify after your armor is already gone it’s usefulness is greatly diminished. It’s sort of the one ability answer to every problem an Orisa faces, people expect you to have it at all times some how. So try not to waste it.

Oh and yeah I am bronze so ignore all of this if you want. But just some tips I learned from playing and watching her over the years.

Well, start by looking at her kit. What does she do that other tanks don’t? The answer is not her shield, which isn’t particularly good. It’s her range.

Don’t play her in the choke. You can put your barrier there to give your team angles if you want, but you’ll get run over if you position there. Play farther back, and give yourself room to poke and chip down anybody who tries to approach you. Use your Halt! to pull people off high grounds that you can’t adequately contest yourself, because you are so slow.

And try to use your Fortify while you still have armor health left. Armor gets the most value from the damage reduction, because it stacks with armor’s native properties. Which means you take less damage and get more value from healing.

Play her as an offtank. You’re there to support the other tank and enable your team to push rather than initiating a push yourself.

Yep, use fortify early on while you still have armor, this means you have to be ready to trigger it the moment you realize you’re about to take a ton of damage. Heroes with high burst damage like Ana will quickly eat through your armor as if it were nothing if you don’t fortify. If you trigger when your armor is already gone, it’s not going to help you.

Either play with a Sig, or with a really good Hog while calling out your halts.

I usually only pull her out to help counter a nasty Doom, Ball, Lucio, Reaper, Genji, or Hog. Her kit is simple, but its application only works (for me) under the above circumstances.

  1. Be aggressive in taking space. Shoot your shield further forward than you think you should, enemies will often let you take it if you barge in

  1. Always use shift harden after shield breaks, you should never not be using harden, it prevents you from getting headshot

  1. Halt above enemies so it pulls them upwards. This is far easier for your team to followup shoot a falling person than someone getting yanked in a sideways direction

Honestly…

… And I say this with love towards a fellow human being…

Don’t.

Orisa is a horribly made hero whose limitations (the requirement for co-ordination, teamwork, and support) are being diluted in OW2 because they’re just not compatible with how most people want to play the game. And they are traits typically harder to come by in the lower ranks.

Her gun has 150 Ammo. That might sound cool, but it necessitates a few things that make her FEEL horrible:

Her bullets are very small projectiles WITH BULLET SPREAD, so not only do you have to LEAD your shots (because they’re not hitscan), but you also don’t get an honest guarantee of where the shots will land after 30m because they could go off in a X degrees in any direction.

Because she has so many bullets, she HAS to have a long reload time, which is MORE susceptible to being interrupted. It feels too long (as does her fire duration, so it may be a ratio thing).

She also gets slowed while shooting, which, in an FPS game FEELS horrible. To perform your PRIMARY FUNCTION (shooting) and be punished for it is an absolute disaster of design.

Her shield is also the worst of all tanks. It has the LOWEST HP and is completely static, meaning you can’t game it or play with it or bait anything out. The only ‘play’ is to shoot it straight up, but that is limited by map design as well as being highly telegraphable.

Halt! is unreliable against fast targets and will more often than not fail to pull fast or ‘dashing’ targets into its centre–even if you have the line/tether attached.

I know you want advice on how to play Orisa (which will likely be redundant in 6 months with OW2) but I would urge you to rethink.

She’s a slow, monotonous, boring, uninspired, oppressive, fun-sapping dork of a hero.

You might have fun for a game or two, IF those games go well, but eventually you’ll get into games where people just run through your shield. And in those instances you Halt! will not work and you’ll still miss shots for having to lead them from 20m away…

…that is, if course, if you’re not reloading.

Your time and life is precious and finite. Don’t waste either on this insipid, stodgy, low-effort hero.

I often play near walls or objects (like the payload) so in case my shield gets destroyed i can hide behind something. Since she is pretty big and easy to kill once her shields down.

But in some games there isn’t a lot of pressure on my shield. Then i can play more freely and aggressive. I love playing orisa!

Peaked diamond, but dropped comp a while afterwards. Anyways, here’s some tips, if you find any useful.

When on attack, don’t be too afraid to push with Fortify, then hold/retreat with barrier. Enough at least to reposition your team and capitalize on it.

Remember her barrier is curved, not flat. The more angles you can cover, the more space you’ll make. But always be sure to have an escape route planned for when it breaks.

When you’re caught out and need to retreat quickly, turn your back to the enemy and look down at the ground. It obscures your head hitbox, giving you extra survivability.

Remember Supercharger is great for winning fights, but it’s also amazing for charging your entire team’s ultimate economy as well. Don’t save it too much when your team is low on ults.

Be careful of Zarya. When you see a Rein-Zarya duo, always shoot the corners of his barrier, as a high charge Zarya is a big problem with your bullet spam.

And halt is fantastic at dragging people off of high ground and denying escapes, but it’s also a damage ability for landing shots: one especially useful against squishies.

  • You may be a tank, but aside from breaking shields, winning tank duels isn’t always a top priority.
