Any advice on how to "git gud"?

I’ll admit, I’m hard stuck high bronze / low silver, my peak is silver 2 so maybe I have no say on this but the matchmaking feels so off… I can’t carry at all and it feels like I’m always forced in positions to carry. Here’s some recent examples; JNHBXF, 6MYS55, M98SQD.

I was playing majority Ashe all games but sheesh bro, what the hell am I supposed to do in those situations?! For whatever reason, I cannot climb on my account at all and I thought my skill was truly off but I played on my girl’s account and managed to get it to plat 5 there, so what’s the deal?

I saw a huge improvement in my own gameplay after watching games back and watching streamers who played the same heroes as me.
Basically just copy what they do until you understand why you should be doing it.
keep pushing you’ll improve eventually! also don’t forget to have fun…

I assume you’re Melee in-game?

When you die, ask yourself what you could have done better and improve that.

That’s the point of saying “git gud” it doesn’t come with advice. That was the advice. :joy:

Play more, learn from every loss. Improve your aim and learn to position depending in the hero you are playing. Also never switch out your best hero just because someone in the enemy team decided to counter you. There is a reason a lot of top 500 players are actually one tricks.

It can, most people can’t see their own mistakes that well when they watch their own footage back, but if OP is Melee, I saw about 5 mistakes within the first 20 seconds out of spawn. Helping them identify issues can send them on the path of actually gitting gud instead of thinking they’re carrying.

Here a secret i found back in OW1. There is no skill gap until higher gold. The same level of players exist in Gold down to Bronze. The only difference is how much MMR hates you. I found the easiest way to climb is to play F Tier hero’s and dominate a single stat. You will start climbing as the game thinks your better than the rest of the players who play that hero.

How many seasons?

Some accounts are literally hard stuck by the algorithm.

OG Bronze OW1 for 10+ seasons is going to have a much harder time climbing than a brand new OW2 account who is bronze.

If you’re OG and hard stuck, good luck mate!

You’ll likely need a semi-consistent 5 stack willing to help carry your account out of bronze.

OW2’s algorithm is much worse.

I began OW1 as a high 1500SR tank back in 2020. Since then I’ve climbed over 2k SR, mostly on the backs of Ball, Zarya and Rein, but literally quit comp the final season of OW1 and haven’t touched it since.

My play varied between solo, duos, and full-blown 6-stacks, but the largest SR gains almost exclusively came from massive win streaks in 6 stacks. The system literally rewarded it infinitely more for being in a group and for winning multiple games, which is what your account desperately needs.

However, the algorithm determining SR (while hidden) is factoring in things like “time spent on fire”, “overall per 10’s” and “Winrate”.

If you can begin boosting these numbers via your gameplay, you’ll slowly begin seeing your SR climb. Winrate and “timespent on fire” appear to be the most important factors of the algorithm, so whatever it takes to boost these is what you need to do.

Play dps with easy kits, you will climb much faster.

Stick with soldier / reaper. Under plat you can play these two heroes and dominate, as you will be picking off targets who are out of position constantly.

Plus they both have good escape and self healing.

Just keep practicing is number 1 thing you can do.

Focus on one thing at the time. Dedicate playing sessions to improving one thing and one thing only. There is a lot of thinking going when you try to improve, beating yourself over not doing everything well in sync is asking for failure. Slowly but surely work on fundamentals, one step at the time.

If you die a lot - work on your positioning. Understand every hero effective range and try to always engage enemies where you have the advantage. Are you Cass vs tanks or Reaper? Stay around 15-20 meters range from them. Are you Reaper? Hug corners, use teleport and stay out of line of sight before you close the gap and start shooting at people.

Always position close to cover no matter what hero you play. Best advice I can give is this: imagine if every enemy in opposing team is ulting Cassidy. Do you survive? If answer is yes then well done, you are playing close to cover. If not, position closer to nearest cover. You need to be ready to jump to cover when you take damage, this will prevent so many deaths you can’t imagine. Change your positions only when it’s safe (so people don’t contest that sightline). If Ashe is watching you crossing the street then you should be dead. Cross sightlines only when no one is watching you, because they themselves backed to cover, are busy doing something else or just no one is nearby.

Aim wise I recommend Surefour guide called " How to improve your Aim w/ Movement on different Heros | Surefour Tutorials". That’s ~1 hour long video where Surefour goes in depth what to think about when you try to aim at enemies what type of aiming style to choose etc. No reason to explain it further than him imo, it’s very well done tutorial. Then it comes to practice. But try to understand how your movement affects your aim, it’s very important and often ignored.

Go watch vods of high ranked players playing the hero you want to learn, and every 10 seconds pause the video and try to predict what they’re going to do and why they should do that. If you guess right congrats you would have made the right play at that time. If you guess wrong try to come to a conclusion as to why the play you predicted would have been wrong in that situation and why the play that the person you’re watching is better. If you end up being wrong but the player dies, assume that it’s a mechanical misplay.

As for when you’re playing say all of your decisions out loud. This is kinda weird at first but it’s to prevent you from autopiloting and also to force you to think about your own gameplay. If a play you’re going for succeeds try to explain to yourself why it succeeded, and if it failed ask yourself why it failed.

Watch players who are better than you. Positioning and knowing when to engage and when to disengage are probably the most important fundamentals. Focus on those first.

After that, focus on your cooldown usage. Are you wasting a cooldown? Are you letting the enemy burn down your barrier when it doesn’t matter? Hitting absorb when the enemy isn’t shooting? Ulting when the fight has already been won or lost? Suzu on an Ashe dot when Ana has anti-nade ready to go? Knowing when to use or hold your abilities will help you get the most out of your kit.

Next, try to get a feel for what cooldowns the enemies have or haven’t used. Try to pay attention to things like a Pharah trying to sneak behind or a Reaper making a beeline for the middle of your team as these are signs that they’re looking to ult. That stuff is gamesense. You’ll sorta get a feel for it and develop it as time goes on.

Finally, just practice with a couple heroes in each role. Keep it limited at first. Familiarize yourself with their kits, their movement, and their aim. You can do things like aimlab or aim workshop game modes. Putting in the time will help you develop your muscle memory for landing shots.

Persistence. keeping an open mind for feedback, and watching replays from games that went poorly to see what you could’ve done better with positioning/enemy cooldowns/etc. are great as well.

I wish you the best in your quest for self-improvement! <3

Alright, I’ll have it done sometime tomorrow. I like to be thorough with these, so it’ll be a lot of reading on your part (and anyone else here who is curious or bored enough to read it)…And a lot of writing on my part. Don’t worry, I’m not going to talk a bunch of **** or try to make you feel bad about anything since you’re asking for help. I will be pointing out a lot of mistakes and areas you need to significantly improve on though.
