Another Matchmaker Rant

Yeah, I complain about the matchmaker all the time - it’s definitely my #1 criticism of the game.

But omg it’s been so crap lately I’m losing it. Solo queue is tolerable in comparison to playing with my partner so everything I’m saying is specifically in regards to the two of us.

WHY IS ALMOST EVERY SINGLE GAME A STOMP???

You stomp me, I stomp you. Repeat. When I think the matchmaker couldn’t possibly deteriorate more, I’m proven wrong.

And when we played earlier today, the whiplash was insane - literally 1 game a complete clown show in our favor and then the next game, the reverse. There used to be, I dunno…subtlety? Like, lots of games were still stomps but they also weren’t win, lose, win, lose, and all at extremes. The typical pattern used to feel like you’d get win and lose streaks (and I still do), but then there would be periods of games that were more mixed results in terms of win/loss as well as the degree of stompage. Now these patterns of mixed W/L are almost always disgusting stomps, too.

And ya know what else is waaaaaayyyy worse? Leavers. Guess I can’t blame them but wow, I come back from almost a week of no internet (hi from Texas!) and most of the games we played someone would leave as soon as their team failed the first initiation. Like, a lot times the fights weren’t even over yet but I guess people on the “losing” (lol in the first 30 seconds of the game) side could tell and so then left. Again, this was most of the games we played for a few hours.

So we had multiple games where one team suffered anywhere from 1 to, in some cases, 6+ leavers and a few of these the losing team was so thoroughly outclassed or bereft of team mates that they simply gave up. At that point, literally no one is having fun.

Had one depressing as hell Havana game where my team pretty much walked through the first 2 points until the enemy no longer had tank players…so they sat down and stopped playing. Then my entire team also stopped playing and I assume just ran down the 6 mins left. My partner and I stayed for most of it to emote and throw ourselves off the bridge but damn, what a sorry state the game is in.

The matchmaker kills this game. I would pay money to be able to play a completely random version of QP. I don’t care if in theory I ended up losing more. The knowledge that there’s an algorithm deciding when I get to win or lose is infinitely more frustrating then actually losing more, but knowing it’s random.

Overwatch naturally has snowball momentum (this is mostly due to ultimate economy) which is why many games can feel one sided. Remember that matchmaking simply takes a statistical value (your hidden MMR) to match you with appropriate opponents and teammates. Your hidden MMR/skill rating cannot account for any qualitative factors in your actual skill (how good is your positioning, how well do you aim, how good is your shotcalling) but instead is mostly focused on your overall win ratio (there are other minor factors, but mostly it’s about your win ratio). The win ratio is the one consistent factor for every player in Overwatch which helps determine how good of a player they are in the long run.

Say what you want but it’s undeniable that there is essentially sandbagging going on when I play with my partner.

I would even go so far as to say I don’t have much of an issue with the matchmaker when I play alone. But something changes as soon as I group up with another person.

Suddenly we have much, much worse team mates on average than if we were to play alone.

Do you play comp or QP? Because I find comp games are better when It comes to this which makes sense since the matchmaking is better than QP.

If you suspect any player in a match is deliberately throwing, you should report them for gameplay sabotage using the in-game report tool.

I play QP - and I’m sure it’s better in Comp but I also know that there still are uneven matches.

In my opinion it would be more frustrating to be trying to play in a competitive mode knowing the matchmaker still isn’t fair, even if it’s more “fair” than QP.

But also, I’m not super competitive and I don’t think it would be fair of me to play in that mode when I’m basically a 1 trick in the tank role and almost a 1 trick in support.

What heroes do you one trick? Because a mercy one trick is almost always welcome lol. And depending on your rank a Rein one trick is always welcome too.

Quick Play will be more loose and unbalanced in terms of the statistical MMR matchup, no denying that. Two reasons for this, first Quick Play uses an entirely seperate MMR from that of Competitive, secondly there are no restrictions to grouping up so its very possible to see any teammate or opponent who is in bronze or grand master in any quick play game. Quick play is more or less about having fun, yes try to win, but have fun.

I don’t think these players are deliberately throwing.

I’m saying we are being sandbagged by the matchmaker as in, it purposefully puts lower skilled teammates on our team than we would typically get if we were alone. And that the enemy team has better players on average, consistently.

Unfortunately, there is no way from our end to track the actual MMR comparisons in Quick Play, but on that note, MMR really is not suppose to matter too much. Again, Quick Play is more of a casual experience overall.

I wish they would show who is in a group again because I think a lot of these “smurfs” are people in groups.

Only in non-role queue modes can you see the group alignments.

You can look at my profile if you want but I promise you nobody wants an Orisa one trick lol. And in support I pretty much just play Mercy and Moira.

I think you’d be fine playing support in comp. Mercy and Moira are usually decent picks. I do agree QP matchmaking is kinda weird lately and I think the lower player count as well as things like flex queue probably shook things up a bit. Hopefully when OW2 comes out a ton of more players will be on and QP games will be better.

Well just having the option to play PvE would make things more tolerable, even besides more players coming in.

PvE having a bad teammate is no where near as frustrating as when it’s in PvP.

This is so true and I speak from my experience on Destiny. When I get annoyed in crucible I just go do a random strike or find some people to do a raid with. OW2 PvE will make the game 1000x less toxic If it’s good lol

Yeah, I really am excited after seeing the newest OW2 stuff - just a shame it’s so far off.

I know the Archives missions are pretty shallow and don’t have much replay value but man, would I appreciate having access to them year-round.

:roll_eyes::roll_eyes::roll_eyes::roll_eyes::roll_eyes::roll_eyes::roll_eyes::roll_eyes::roll_eyes::roll_eyes::roll_eyes::roll_eyes: and wait for the game to do zip all about it. Yes.

It would be great playing Overwatch and knowing the games aren’t rigged to a certain extent - in both winning and losing. It’s literally gotten to the point where I know whether or not I’m going to win the next game just by seeing how many games I’ve won recently, and that shouldn’t be the case.

Literally just group people up by their MMR. Don’t try to find an “average” by “balancing out” teams with players of lower/higher ranks. Putting two Golds on a team against a full Diamond team doesn’t make that a fair match-up just because one person on the Golds’ team is a Masters Support. Those Gold players simply become a liability to their team because they shouldn’t be fighting Diamonds, and they absolutely can’t keep up with them.

The system is so deeply flawed… :v:
