So, I was thinking here… What programs do the animators use to make animations and models? Maya, 3ds max, blender, c4d?
for characters i know some of blizz artists use zbrush and maya for modelling and 3d coat or substance painter for texturing.
maya is the standard for tv film industry animation.
The concept artists are also free to use their preferred drawing programs including but not limited to Photoshop, Corel Draw, and Clip Studio Paint.
But yeah, most Maya for 3D modeling and rigging.
There was a panel in BlizzCon 2018 which goes into this whole process. It was very fun to watch.
We saw it in the Mei animated short Behind the scene: They Use Maya, this software is almost a must in Character animations/Game Animations. and ZBrush is a must too. for Textures and everything else i don’t know. but i think they use Photoshop and Substance Painter.
Maya is definitely used. Zbrush is used for sculpting and texture painting.
I’d imagine they have inhouse tools, or may even use Substance for really high quality non game assets.
They use Maya, Houdini, and Redshift for their cinematic shorts
The software they use for the shorts doesn’t really have to be the same as the one they use in the game, though. Especially since it’s clear they use different models/rigs in the shorts to the ones in the game.
i’m pretty sure they use maya to make Game animations, and animated shorts. althouth is clear that the rig is different.
I actually bought a course made by an overwatch character designer and they go from zbrush to topogun to maya and substance designer. They also said Mari is used in the overwatch pipeline
Game studios use any of the ones you listed. Some outliers have their own animation software. But most of them use the industry standards like Maya and 3DS Max.
ALL of them probably have custom scripts and extensions (in the biggest studios like Ubisoft this is an entire job position to make these extension stuff) though so it’s not gonna be the same as a fresh download of the program
they don’t use c4d right? most of the time is maya and other stuff
They do welcome those with Cinema 4D experience. There was a recent listing for a graphic designer for Overwatch League and that or Maya was one of the “plusses” in the job description.
modo is the best most modern 3d program imo. maya just gets used because of all the legacy clients. modo is way better designed and more upto date.
Gasp he said it
I am a blender man for life most likely
what version of maya do they use? 2019?
People say that with the Eevee engine, blender might be used in the video-game industry
cinema4d is mostly used for motion graphics, titles, advertising type stuff.
That feels good! I love it when they can be free to use the softwares they’re most comfy at. I had a professor who painted some stuff for Diablo and used Photoshop and a huge wacom tab.
Yeah I agree, I always thought that is the employee who needs to adapt to the company and not the contrary, glad to hear that.
