An anti-cheat Twitter account is threatening to release the source code of a major cheat engine if cheating isn't resolved

https://www.twitlonger.com/show/n_1sr4bco

So basically there’s this anti-cheating Twitter account called “Overwatch Police Department”, and they just released a massive rant about the state of the game and cheating, and is literally threatening to release the source code of a cheat that is used as a foundation for other cheat engines in a week, unless Blizzard steps up and does something about cheats and the state of the game in general.

Thoughts?

The actual twitter link?
Edit: nvm

How realistic is this demand of theirs?

Isn’t preventing cheats not a near impossible task, that even other large publishers, such as Valve and EA, can’t fully prevent it in their games?

Isn’t this blackmail? Which is (I’m pretty sure) illegal?

I’m not a pc player but I do feel the pain you suffer from playing against cheaters, if this turns out to be real then :man_shrugging:

This is like threatening to drop a nuke if no one attends your peace rally… wtf??

“Feel cheaters pain”… what?

I don’t think this is going to end well for them. I get the feeling there are some… big legal implications for a threat like that.

…But still, most of what’s being said in that post is correct and infuriating.

No, it’s like threatening to drop a nuke if a surgical strike isn’t made.

The pain you suffer from playing against cheaters you dumbo

That’s not what you said, dumbo. Grammar and context bud.

Edit: nice edit

About time someone did something. Now if we can get these guys to do it for all games.

Isn’t what they are threatening to do illicit?

Yep, then they turn around and file a class action law suit against Blizzard.

There is no legal ground in this case.

It’s like stealing from a robber and going to the police about it.

Blizzard does not care, if anything Blizzard will not do anything at all, just to get their hands on that source code.

Their threat doesn’t carry any weight unless they go through with it.

And in this case I hope they do.

Analogies like that don’t tend to make much sense. If you want a slightly more accurate one, it’s like being upset at the amount of keygens floating around for photoshop, so you just go ahead and distribute the source code for them to try and strongarm adobe.

And then adobe sues you, too. If they’re greedy, at least.

Except the cheats are becoming more advanced and are harder to detect these days so they are jeopardizing and blackmailing a company who might not even be able to change their anti cheat detection for this new cheat in less than a week

Analogies not making sense are the sign of a weak mind.

Read the rest of my post, I did edit it.

Irrelevant

If the source code is released, they all can be auto banned and blocked.

That’s what you people don’t understand.

This threat is meaningless… And from Blizzard’s standpoint, the best thing they can do is let this so called anti-cheat group release the code.

Then Blizzard can do something about the cheats.

He sent it to them months ago
