Always in Asian Servers Even Though Located in Americas

Hi!

I’ve been able to play with my friends all the time in the NA servers and I am still in the “Americas” location. My public IP is still in the US, and no VPN is being used. For some reason starting earlier this week (August 18), whenever we play (qp, competitive, dm) we are placed in Asian servers. I can tell because we all have 200 ping and all the names are typically Korean or Chinese. This is occurring 100% of the time. I tried at different times in the day (6-10 pm PST on a Saturday) as well as midnight PST across multiple weekdays.

This is making the game unplayable. I haven’t seen a decline in the steam player base (I use battle.net), so I don’t understand why this is happening. Is NA (west) just an empty player base?

NA West is certainly not empty. However, Bnet regions are only for your account when it comes to Overwatch. You’ll still get connected wherever you have the lowest ping. In your case, the server is seeing your connection originate somewhere closer to the Asia server, so it connects you there.
